Gee, does that mean we can't like ourselves??

Battery not charging
bongobobny replied to Thomas's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, that is the main reason for load testing a battery! At no load a weak battery certainly can read a nice 12.8 volts but as soon as any kind of load is put on it the voltage will take a nose dive. Auto Zone along with several other places will load test your battery for free... -
Nope, I can only send a message, or report post on the left, and reply with quote or multi quote on the right...

They might be hard to see being in the black bottom border on the left side, but they are there! Look for the smiley and the thumbs up... PS I really only posted to see if I can "like" or "thank" myself.

Oh, aaaah... Hey guys, we're gonna have to drive out and take turns... -
I remember a while back someone having an issue with the cruise not staying set and it was the clutch switch being loose or broken or something like that...
-
That's why I mentioned the SC C/O relay and it's mounting...

All 1st gen coils are the same. TCI's '83 only, '84 - '89 interchangeable, '90 - 93 interchangeable... There is actually a coil resistance spec, and I once went through a bunch of coils I had and tried to match all 4 as close as possible...
-
Yup! God info there Bratman!! O)n the 2nd gens, you discard the stock caliper mounting brackets when switching over...
-
Yup!! The dreaded green growth!! Hope you are able to clean out the coil, that's the most likely reason to replace coils on the 1st gen, not the coil actually failing...

Ummmm, what kind of car are we talking about?? Maybe Ragtop, Yammer, and I can do a road trip if the car is interesting enough... -
Nope, MK1 rotors are not the same as MK2...

OK my initial thoughts are something gone astray in the Starting Circuit Cut-off Relay, which is located in the area under the battery box where the fuel pump and filter are. Sometimes that assembly falls off of it's mounting bracket, it's held on with a rubber strap, and it falls against the engine and the case gets melted and it causes all sorts of issues!! Now, the bike does start and run?? By "the cruise won't work" do you mean no lights, nothing?? I guess there is a remote possibility something is wrong with the entire dash assembly, kind of hard to troubleshoot remotely without further voltage tests, etc... In case you didn't know it, here's the wiring schematic http://www.venturerider.org/wiring/99-09%20Yamaha%20Royal%20Star%20Venture%20Wiring%20Diagram%20Rev%20B.pdf

Well by customs (I was sort of paraphrasing) I meant obeying our laws, showing respect for our country, honoring our flag and national anthem, etc. and not necessarily referring to ethnicity. Something that has been lost is the fact that this Nation was originally organized as a CHRISTIAN nation with Biblical values and standards, but that does not mean you had to be a Christian to be a citizen, however in the beginning most were just that. People are confused when they hear that this country was established to be free to worship as you please, what it really meant was freedom from the control of the Church of England and it's control over things. What it is today as opposed to what it was even before 1776 when we declared our Independence from the rule of the British government is quite a different story. Now we are a nation torn between liberal thinking "anything goes" attitudes and the conservative view of getting back to the principles that our government and "conserve" the values and standards we were established on. Anyways, the gist of what Teddy Roosevelt was saying is that this nation was open to anyone wishing to join but they were expected to follow our rules and learn our language, NOT try to change our country into something THEY want! Of course he respected their customs and was not trying to dictate exactly how they thought or acted, or how they worshiped either for that matter! We are guaranteed freedom of speech which means we may, without persecution, express our beliefs! We are not expected to be government clones with no mind of our own! Geez, all this all because I was agreeing with Air Ready about Teddy Roosevelt being a great president, and as a veteran myself who was willing to give my life to protect our (once) great nation and preserve our freedoms, yes it galls me to see her torn down...
-
Air Ready, I too admire Teddy Roosevelt a a great American President!!! I especially appreciate his outlook on immigration, let them come with open arms as long as they learn our language and customs and become American Citizens and become productive to society! There IS a reason he was chosen for Mount Rushmore...

Ummmm, I'm thinking it's corrosion on one or more connectors. And, even new COPS ain't gonna work if there is no input signal to them! Actually 1st gen coils don't fail that often but are susceptible to the dreaded green growth inside the caps. When you pull the plug wires to check, you will want to cut about 1/4" off the end so that when you reinsert them the metal tang will make a new hole into the conductor, and make sure those rubber o rings are on the wire far back enough so that when you screw the cap on it will firmly hold the wire in place so it doesn't come out. The second place to check is the connectors for the TCI. If the pins get corroded you could loose the 12 volt firing command for the coil. Providing that the bike was properly stored and not left out in the elements I kind of doubt the TCI went bad unless there was a lot of humidity causing moisture to get trapped inside the box. I doubt that is the case as you live in an arid climate, right? So, yup check for proper spark! Also, keep in mind you can have a bad cap that is loosing spark as well! Somewhere on this site is instructions for disassembling and servicing the plug caps...

Fits all from '86 up. Does not fit MK1...
-
OK on mine I bought a VMax splitter for the lines along with the SS lines from good old Earl, Skydoc_17 one of our member vendors...
-
I did R1Golds with SS lines and a 14mm master, not a night/day difference but yes an improvement IMHO...

Battery not charging
bongobobny replied to Thomas's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, the main reason to "bother" with it is if you have shorted turns or a short to ground you will know right away without even having to start and rev the bike... -
We will probably be there Ben, I'll let you know for sure in the near future...

Battery not charging
bongobobny replied to Thomas's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK just a little more added info for someone who may be reading this, just because the resistance readings are good does not necessarily mean the stator is good. The stator winding is just a plain piece of wire that has varnish only as an insulator and is wound up in a coil configuration, actually several coils make up one total winding. A simple ohmmeter only applies a few volts to the wire to measure it. If the varnish was weak this small voltage may not break down the varnish. Also an ohmmeter applies DC or direct current to the wire. Now DC travels down the whole area of the wire. AC voltage, on the other hand does a thing called "skin effect" as it travels down the wire, the electron "movement" tends to travel along the circumference of the wire. In case you don't know our charging system is just like an alternator, it generates AC voltage, not DC. As stated the higher the RPM's the higher the EMF (voltage), and also the higher the frequency of the AC voltage. Now the combination of higher voltage and higher frequency coupled with skin effect can cause the varnish insulation to break down even though it did not break down with the low level DC applied when reading resistance. Now this condition does not happen that often, generally if the insulation breaks down it becomes a permanent failure and will show up as an abnormal resistance reading. What I am driving at is if your resistance checks are OK do not assume that there is nothing wrong with the stator, do an output voltage reading anyway. Also it is always important to check each wire to ground as a winding may be shorted to ground somewhere along the winding, but the total resistance of the winding may very well test OK!
