Yup, Joe is right on. The first board has a voltage regulator to reduce the voltage to the opener voltage. The other board is the opener but needs some kind of push button to activate it. Chuck the green board, the perf board could be used to power a new remote...

OK how about the starter motor or start switch was stuck? I'm betting that with the starter running continuously that it will run about 100RPM give or take. That would really make the battery run down! No I can't explain why it still ran with the battery disconnected unless the stator was putting out enough to keep the starter running...
