  1. 5 years later than the last post but it works. Cap off or loose and tie handle down.
  2. Wishing you a`speedy and complete recovery.
  3. I haven't been watching this site lately but noticed the St Augustine meet coming up on the 4th. Last one I went to was at a place that has become one of our family favorites in JAX called Clarks Fish Camp on the Intercoastal Waterway not too far from St. Augustine. Not sure if I will be in town but if so I plan on coming regardless. If you check their website I think you will be impressed but it is just a suggestion. clarksfishcamp.com
  4. Awesome job Yamagirl. I have an identical 84 but could use a little clean up. I'm over on Lake City and would like to see Big Red. Maybe we could meet somewhere on I-10 and I'll pop for your lunch in exchange for your info on your rebuild.
  5. You never know what a person can hear while in a "vegetative" state so minister to him when you see him if he is still alive. Our prayers is that he will be more alive when God takes him home. Peace to you and your family.
  6. I travel quite a bit and I usually go to Tripadvisor.com and read the comments for each hotel/motel.
  7. Got everything together and engine runs pretty good now but still needs some fine tuning. Couldn't have done it without the help from the group here. Looking forwards to a North FL meet and eat sometime. Thanks to all.
  8. Sorry I can't answer your questions regarding the actual sizes of the jets. I too tried to find the info on the mikuni website but didn't have any luck. At first I thought they related to mm to decimal sizes but couldn't prove that either. Maybe someone that has a few different size jets laying around and the ability to accurately measure the holes with pin gauges can tell us.
  9. Thanks Gary and Bill. I have an 84 so I know the one jet is a different size which I have found. I pulled all my jets after I looked at one a saw 117 on it and stripped the others down. Come to find out the PO had the carbs worked on and some of the jets have a different marking or none at all. Will probably order some new sets to be sure they are all the same. Did notice in some of my reading that sometimes the jets in the rear cyls. might have a slightly different jet than the front cyls. Anyone do this to their bike?
  10. Dingy, I didn't see anything for your last posting re: carb info.
  11. Abusive Throttle Cranker's "HERE" is not a link. I found the page in the manual that details the jets and their location but the numbers don't give their actual sizes. Some of the jets I have are not stamped clearly so I too would like to know the actual diameters of the jets and their proper locations in the entire carb.
  12. Thanks Dingy, Considering their location I can see where if they were leaking they would cause problems. As long as they are just to seal off the access to the jets I'll make sure mine are tight or make new ones. Just have to find the K&L 18-2879 carb kits to start putting them back together.
  13. Just what do those two rubber plugs in the jet block do? Are they just plugs or does the one with a hole in the bottom actually goes through to act like a vent? Mine look like they are just plugs and before I assemble my carbs I can cut some new ones on my lathe if thats all they are?
  14. I kept bidding every week and got a set from Motorsport in Miami and installed them as described on the previous links. One thing I found helpful when getting the diaphragms seated between the plastic collar and the other one was to slide a .025 feeler gauge blade on the backside of the diaphragm to seat it properly. I found that when it is seated properly you can turn the diaphragm to line up the tab while positioning the small hole at the bottom of the slide to face the engine which I assume means to point to the cylinder it is on. I don't quite understand why it should point hat way but that is what I did.
  15. Randy, The reason I say one carb is that I have all the screws backed off so the other 3 are closed. I had the three adjusted to just touching the stops with the first carb but I noticed that the adjustments on the 2nd and 3rd screw seem to move the first off of the somewhat closed position and again it would die with any throttle.
  16. Thanks for the tips. I have previously taken the carbs off and cleaned them after reading all the warnings. I have also sprayed around the carbs and boots for vac. leaks finding none. Diaphragms are fine. I will check the "L" brackets for any misalignment issues. Put all new plugs and disconnected one at a time when running to prove they are firing, all ok. I recently bought a AGM Scorpion battery for $78.00 and highly recommend one. I feel my main problem is that the first carb does not close enough at idle as it will start fine with full choke but dies at the opening of throttle or reduction of choke but I am trying to get it to run off choke on just that one carb. With the idle screw under the throttle stop backed all the way out I can still push down on the first carb lever which tells me it is not closing all the way. I work on it a little at a time but I'm traveling a bit and try to work on it in my spare time. As I said before it was running fairly well a year ago and I can't say enough about the bike regardless being 28 years old. I'll keep at it and work it out with all the help from the members eventually. You folks are a great resource and I appreciate all your help.
  17. I have tried to accomplish the suggestion provided but what I am running into is that with slack in both throttle cables and all carb screws backed out, the front carb is not fully closing. Something seems to be keeping it cracked open as viewed through the airbox with the slide pulled back. Or, is that just the normal position for that carb?
  18. I'm trying to get my 84 Venture running properly but so far I can only get a slow idle out of it after it warms up. I have been following the other threads re diaphragms, etc but my question relates to the closed throttle position. When the bike is idling I can retard the throttle or push down on the front carb lever and it closes a little more and the rpm will rise a little. Basically, I run out of idle screw adjustment before it contacts the first carb lever. I loosened the throttle cable adjustment housing and put slack in the cable but the throttle still doesn't seem to close all the way. I would think the throttle plates should close tight when there is no tension on them. I also notice that my full cold choke setting is not complete as I can take a pair of plies and pull on the choke linkage and it will snap further about another 1/16 on an inch but it will still start with the partial choke. I know I have to tune the carbs together but I'm not at that point yet until I get this linkage figured out. I had it running last spring when I went to a "meat and eat" in Jacksonville and one of the guys brought his carbtune but even though it ran fairly well but the vacumn was barely registering. I got home and messed with the carbs and that's where it sat until I started working on it again. I would appreciate any suggestions.
  19. If it is backfiring it might notmbe getting a constant spark. A little unburned gas collects and then when the sparks finally arrives it backfires. just a guess but that comes from the old days when we used to turn the key off for a second or two on my dad's car and then turn it back on again resulting with a loud backfire. pretty cool until I blew the muffler off one day. Honest Dad, it just fell off!
  20. Thanks for the clarification on the hole position at 6 o'clock. I thought I read in the forums somewhere iin the past but I could not find it. Really wonder if it makes a big difference where it is positioned and for that matter, what it's purpose is.
  21. My qusetion was about the relation of the hole in the end of the slider, not the diaphragm, in relation to the tab. The small hole in the plastic slider, can it be positioned in any direction? Thanks
  22. As a side question, I pulled a carb slide and diaphragm out from one of the carbs and noticed that there is a small hole at the bottom of the slide which faces the venturi area of the carb. Is that hole suppose to be positioned in relation to the diaphragm tab? I notice that I can easily rotate the slide within the diaphragm.
  23. I have changes plugs, caps and seafoam treatment. The bike was running pretty well a year ago but I couldn't pull enough vacumn to balance the carbs. Since then I probably did more harm playing with carb screws and now it won't come off choke, stalls with any throttle. Have read some good tips here like adjusting the throttle plates with a fine wie to get them in harmony. I did notice though that when I look at the inner throttle cable mounting bracket I see it flexing and until I can get in there I don't know if that is normal or not? Anyways, I have a new set of diaphrams ordered although I looked mine over before and didn't see any pinholes. I will pull the sluggish slide out, check it and clean it. What is a good lubricant for them? Can I spray them with silicone spray? We'll keep at it!
  24. I have been wondering about the condition om my diaphrams, I don't see any pinholes but they are original and I am having carb problems. I have the airbox off and when I reach down with a tool to manually move the slides back one is very sluggish in coming back compared to the others. The other three move back fairly quickly. What is the normal movement? Thanks.
  25. I had a chance to search some o he past postings and found my answer regarding the vent tube.
