  1. Since the 2014 IR is going to be in Guntersville, AL - I thought I might take a day and go hog hunting ~ something I don't get to do in WI. I mentioned this in the 2014 International Rally (IR) thread and there seemed to be some others that may also be interested in doing a hunt. So I copied the info from that thread and started this one so those that are might also want to do some hog hunting have a spot to coordinate info. Here's what we got so far. __________________________________ From Brake Pad : The Parks department gave me this company's information on the boar hunting. Mann Mountain Outfitters Address: 1670 Fairview Dr, Horton, AL 35980 Phone: (256) 298-1442 they are some 20 miles away. As far as a firearm is concerned you will be able to use: · Rifles of any caliber · Handguns or pistols · Shotguns, 10 gauge or smaller · Long bows, compound bows, or crossbows From me: In AL you only need a small game license for boar. Non-resident 3 day small game license is $42.60 and does NOT include deer and turkey. The All Game hunting licence includes deer and turkey. http://www.outdooralabama.com/licenses/huntlicinfo/ Here's some more info - http://www.huntwildpig.com/state-specifics/alabama/ AL considers feral hogs a game animal and as such, a license is required even on private land. You also need a WMA permit ($16) if you are hunting on public land. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SO - if we have any AL members that hog hunt, know a farmer that wants some hogs removed, knows a guide or can provide any additional info or help on making this ho hunt happen - share it here, please. Otherwise, I'll make calls and scour the web for info and post it in this thread. Anyone else that might want to join me, post here as well. I'm thinking a location within a max. 100 miles of Guntersville would be fine, closer is better. That should keep the Topic Police happy and return the 2014 IR thread to it's original purpose. Stay tuned and zeroed in.
  2. I've ridden the Trace end to end. the Trace is part of the National Park System - http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm should give you all the info you need. It's a nice ride, curvey, lots of sweepers, but not challenging. There's a lot of history to stop and soak up, see & read. Merriweather Lewis died along the Trace, there's some historic buildings and sites. 45 mph speed limit, gotta get off to get gas, food and a bed.
  3. I agree. But your Owl eyes are fading - the shower is not for me. Read closely.
  4. Thus the reason I suggested establishing a seperate thread on this topic - I just hadn't yet started the thread. I merely suggested that it was something I thought about doing while there. Speaking for myself - I have may diverse interests along with motorcycling. I ride to and from these rallies, but rarely go on the big group rides when there. I prefer to take advantage of being in a new area and doing things I may not get a chance to do at home. Like hog hunting if I'm in the south, doing some cave exploring, checking out the local history, sampling the local wines and beers, etc. What better vacation than combining motorcycling & hunting? PS - I started a Hog Hunting thread - http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81113 Please make future posts related to hog hunting here so we can keep this for the 2014 IR info.
  5. :happy65: I actually talked my wife into going to the PIP ONLY because she can use the shower in Ann's house. No shower - no go. It'll be good to see you again, Bill. How are things in "THE CITIES"
  6. That is my wife's idea of camping. Any place you seep not your own bed is "roughing it" for her. LOL
  7. Cool website. But now I'M confused - I thought we were going to AL not GA? I was thinking a day trip to the Gulf, 6-8 of us charter a boat and go deep sea fishing. But that would likely require an overnight stay (after 6 hours or so on the ocean) or 2, so maybe I'll rent a boat and see if I can catch one of those big southern bass or a catfish right there in Guntersville Lake. And find a spot to hunt some hog.
  8. I don't even have any CORPORAL or GENERAL objections. Looks like a nice place with options and opportunities. Make sure they have a smokers area - someplace where folks can relax with an adult beverage and NOT block lodge traffic or offend the general public and other guests.
  9. OK-I'll save that for another trip. I'll stick with the freshwater fish in the lake this go-around.
  10. 2 Q's. 1. What's the proximity of the camping area to the lodge? Is it walking distance, shuttle distance (available ?), or gotta ride there and back? 2. Anybody else interested in doing wild boar hunt while we're there? There's gotta be some places in that area to get a piggie.
  11. Looks like about 800 miles for me - an easy 2 day if the co-pilot attends. She had a blast at the last one - I may not be able to leave her behind again. The room price is kinda steep - I'd consider splitting the cost of a room with someone. Now if I can just get her to ride thru KY again........ Good job, Mike for stepping up.
  12. We also got back home yesterday - nice ride, no issues. And I'll echo my thanks, gratitude and appreciation for all the folks that worked to set this up. Velma and I had an excellent time. Truly a great bunch of folks - I wish we could have had time to visit with everyone. Sorry we didn't get a chance to see Rick & Marilyn again before we left - see you at the PIP? Safe travels to everyone who still has to go home, don't have too much fun without us. vaya con dios, amigos y amigas.
  13. Apparently my registration form got lost in cyberspace. Good thing I saved a copy, eh?
  14. Mike - I see the update was done June 23 for the attending members and didn't see my name on there. I filled out the form and sent the $$ much before that - did I miss something?
  15. Ok, OK............ I'll return to lurking. I can make trouble when I get there, eh? Good to know there's still some that can recognize humor and respond accordingly.
  16. Is it possible to send a mass e-mail to all the VR members? Or would that be a ton of work? I know I get a Happy Birthday e-mail from VR, so I assume that a message could be sent to everyone. Something like - "if you are planning to attend the Galena rally and/or have made camping or hotel reservations - please click here to complete the registration form and send in your money NOW. " I say this because I have been very busy and not been on this site or the Facebook age for quite a time and had almost forgotten I'd made the reservations. And was completely unaware that I needed to register. Only by chance did I go to the FB page and see the registration post. I can't be the only guy with too many irons in the fire. I know putting these things together is a lot of work:bang head: and remembering to complete the form is a small thing that we should do to make it a little easier for the planners. And sending a reminder e-mail is a bit like hand-holding - something I deplore. Just a thought.
  17. OK - I was unaware I needed to pre-register, but having been informed, I have complied. Which, for those of you that know me, is completely out of character. I also have some questions - Is there a dress code for the banquet, or can we come "au natural"? What If I'm a vegetarian or allergic to peanuts - do I get a seperate meal? Is beer included? Do I have to bring my own pretzels? Can I make fun of the Canadians, eh? If I get my feelings hurt, can I get money back? What if I don't like the color of my room? I may have more later.
  18. My understanding is that since this pic went public some years back, a dirtbag has removed/stolen the front wheel of the bike.
  19. What year are those pics from? And why are you whining about my people's music?
  20. So - back to the horn. I was eyeballing myself from JP. How was the install? Did you mount it where the old old horn was on the lower right? Did you remove or disconnect the horn under the fairing? Anything you learned, discovered or recommend when installing one? Glad it did the trick - too many people are just oblivious to the world around them and many of those people drive. Anything you can do to snap them out of is worth the $$$$ in my opinion.
  21. Just my recent experience - Checking air pressures before I left for MN for the PIP, I put the front and rear tires at 36 psi. I had the rear of the bike loaded pretty good. But I thought I'd put a little pressure in the front shocks before I left anyway. It seemed to make the front end a little squirrely, so at the first gas stop I let all the air out of the fronts and increased the rear shock pressure to 45 psi. Made a noticeable improvement in the handling. If you're a big guy (I'm 160) - I'd try increasing rear tire and shock pressure to "lift" the rear of the bike, shifting more weight to the front tire.
  22. Great pics - brings back some nice memories. We were there in June '06 - lots of fun, great roads, nice folks. I think that was the 1st Eureka Springs rally? I remember the War Eagle Mill. Glad you all had a good time.
  23. Owl - finally chimed in? Your recollection seems a little less.......shall we say.....embellished - than your partner's version. And your cooking skills are............acceptable. No one has died or even become seriously ill.......so far.............that I know of. But your photography skills are............less than stellar. Pics of empty chairs and 1/2 of someone's face? The back of everyone's head? Cracked me UP!
  24. Yep, Terry was definitely Mrs. Clean. :thumbsup2:I think Tom was busy doing his Neil young impersonation. I'll give Russ his due, he did a lot of pre-PIP work and I saw him start on the Sunday breakfast and make the bread pudding for Sunday night. All in all - a pretty good joint effort, I'd say. A few more volunteers for the less glamorous jobs would be nice, and I think all you'd have to do is ask - it's good crew. I'm just glad all the appliances were still working..........
