I had this question last year about my 87 and if I remember right I’m averaging around 24mpg but I had a lot of other stuff going on so it wasn’t a primary concern. I’ve also read in this forum somewhere that these engines run so well that many don’t even realize they have a dead cylinder. Having no comparison how do you check? I know how to test spark, and have heard of compression test but have never done one. Didn’t come up with any great results doing a search.

This hits home and is so true. I always have TP in my carry on. And growing up my dad always had a roll of TP in a coffee can with some sanitizer behind the seat. When I turned 16 I started to carry my own coffee can and have one in every vehicle. It took 25 years of having that insurance behind the seat, but when the time came to cash in on my investment it payed off in Spades!

All very true. This is just an idea that I want to carry out. Haven’t talked about it with the wife or anyone else yet. That trip was just something I came across while googling. The nice thing for me about that route is at any point I’m no more than six hours from home. And can easily modify it into smaller chunks like you suggest.

Nice pic! I’m an Eagle Scout and have done a fair amount of backcountry backpacking. I sort of feel this is very similar in concept. Now to sort through all the cobwebs blocking experience past.

Thanks, yea I’m fairly familiar with the climate and will be bringing one of my camelbacks out of storage. Should be doing that anyways. Earlier I started watching Puc’s recent video on a tool kit but stopped knowing I’d need to rewatch while making a list. I started a tool kit already for everyday carry.

Back in my 20’s I could pack for a weekend inside the underseat and surrounding space of my sport bike, sometimes a backpack as well and always a cargo net bungie to pick up a case of brew once nearing the destination. Most always I was with a few other riders hitting up my buddies beach house or where others had driven their cage so I didn’t have to rely on bike only transportation, and if something went wrong I had backup. March 2020 I got my 87VR because of a planned weekend trip in May but it got cancelled. This summer I want to embark on my first real touring trip but have never done so. I may have a passenger, might have some riding mates, might go it alone. The 10mm was the predecessor to the .40 mainly used by the FBI. That’s what I recall when I bought my .40 years ago. Because it’s less common I was wondering if it’s actually easier to find right now.

I honestly opened this thread expecting it was about sockets or some other tool.

I fired both girls up a few weeks ago just for shits and giggles when I was doing other randomness in the garage. It was a nice day so opened the doors and let me breathe. I was mostly curious to see if my new found use of harbor freight battery tenders was doing what they should. The venture didn’t have any more trouble than a normal cold morning, I gotta adjust the choke lever or maybe just lube it. Damn All this bike talk makes me wanna go for a ride!

Damn Larry sorry to hear that. I think that’s why a lot of guys end up with a few extra parts bikes. Cheaper to buy a whole bike than the part you need. I’m about to do just that myself. When I got my 87 the PO had an auxiliary compressor attached to the saddle bag and Schrader valves to the suspension. Luckily all the factory stuff was still there so I just had to fix it and splice back into the lines. Thinking about keeping the onboard compressor for tires and whatnot.

I’m with saddlebum on this one. Why would you want something other than the factory air controls?

Are you using a spark tester? Just wondering how you are measuring your spark.

Awesome project! If well prepared and a primary focus I think this could be done over winter. Then again nothing ever plays out the way you dream it. Plus my wife would never let me spend that much time in the garage unless maybe I also has a housecleaner and handyman on retainer to take care of the inside. It inspires me to clean things up though, last year (it’s been less than a year since I knew what a venture was) the goal was to get her functioning and get out on the road to see if the touring bike life was one I wanted to pursue. Little did I know that small love of labor would turn into a love of my MKII. So my question to you is what are you using for a degreaser? And how are you prepping for polish / paint? I grew up spoiled in my dads shop with pretty much every comfort including a solvent tank. “Anybody can do a job with the right tools. Our job is to get it done with what we have” Is a motto at work.

Haha!! I just put something together that is so obvious I’ve missed it this long in life. Dino is dinosaur and the mascot for Sinclair. Because oil comes from dinosaurs 🤯! Thanks for the info, I was a little hesitant because other bikes are very specific. It’s nice these machines are more forgiving.

Do you have contact info? That windshield looks a lot like mine, but mine is tinted. I’d love to replace it as it has a lot of crazing. Also what are these saddle bag straps?!? I told myself “I’m gonna loose one of these some day” and sure enough it wasn’t long after I heard it tumbling down the roadside. Luckily the lady behind me didn’t run it over, and even blocked traffic while I went to scoop it up. No damage thankfully. Here’s my sticker to add to your database. Very curious if it’s already been reported. I’m in Layton Ut, bought it just under a year ago in Logan Ut. But in the saddle bag full of extras there was a box of parts with a Layton address. I’d love to know some history of the bike. Took me a little time and lots of info from this forum but I got everything working as it should except for maybe CB (don’t have headset) and cruise is intermittent. At some point a Couple named Lonnie and Aileen owned it as their names were painted on the trunk. Anyway it’s an 87 VR, color is cream and like a metallic grey with metallic orange pinstripe. Mileage 31946.
