If it is that cold you may want to pull the drain plugs as soon as you get it out of the water so that nothing can freeze on the way home. But I'm sure you know that already..... The radio was saying that north east Ohio got a surprise heavy last night with lots of down trees and power outages. I hope everything is OK at home.
-
Well I'm still holding out...... My orange stuff is only 2 layers and I do not feel any restricted movement. And I'm cheap.

So far I have caught myself every time I was loosing situational awareness and have not had anything bad happen yet. Maybe it is because most of my riding is in heavy city traffic where I just know that I do not have time to allow any form distraction. Cuz I know that every one of those cages are out to get me......

Was 31 when I left the house this morning. Just have to be careful of the frosty leaves in the twisties. I don't have any heated gear, I just look like a BIG pumpkin wearing all of my Blaze Orange Gortex hunting gear. Keeps me toasty warm down to 0 for riding or -25 hunting. Saw an 8 point and a 10 point fighting along side the road, Had to stop and watch that show. A month ago those same two bucks were buddies and I passed between them as they flew across the road. But then I did add Seafoam and Stabil to the tank when I filled up this morning. It is that time of year when any ride could be the last of the season. My bike gets parked till spring, as soon as the first salt truck hits the roads.

I have had a significant rear end noise for quite a while now. I have been assured that is entirely due to my eating habits.....
-
Lucky you. I see you got your delivery that I sent on down......

Just loose the HDs, With the 1st gens you will never have to brake again, till you catch up with them while they are waiting for you at the ice cream shop.
-
That's because a bear can catch a 2nd gen, but not a 1st gen........

My parents phone number had all of the same digits as a local pizza joint. Just reverse the digits on each side of the dash. Of course most of the call came in right around dinner time. It did not take long before they just started to take the rush carryout orders. I'm sure that pizza joint had a lot of POed customers when they got there and there was no pizza. Since it was a national chain with around a dozen shops in the metro area. It was probably taking a lot of time to call around to try to figure out which store the person called.
-
I don't know, Maybe old age is sneaking up on me? BUT NO!!!!! Or I will have to buy a 2nd gen like that other guy did....... . . Better?
-
That was my first thought to........ But then for some odd reason I behaved myself for a change......

You can get an idea of how much room you will need for your 2 bikes. Park them side by side in the driveway and draw a chalk line around the outer most points on both of them. this will give you an idea on what you need in your specific case. OR Draw a 5 x 10 rectangle and see if you can figure a way to get both bikes COMPLETELY within that rectangle. I am thinking that to get both bikes in there, you will have to have them both on an angle. The expanded metal ramps do have a lot of wind resistance. In some cases they can have even more wind resistance than a solid ramp would. BUT, since this will be getting pulled by a full size van. there should not be all that much air going thru the ramp. Same with having the bikes angled, the van will block most of the wind which will help both of the the MPGs.

I missed this in the original post. If they are usable as reversing lights, this means that they are white LEDs, When converting to LED you ALWAYS want the LED color to match the color of the lens or the color of the needed function. White LEDs behind a colored lens will always give poor results.

Won't crank...see symptoms below

As long as you are going to Advance Auto, charge up you old car battery and have them load test it for free, then you will know if it is worth storing some more. Advance Auto will give you a $5 gift card for each of the old batteries. Check your local yellow pages to see if you have a battery manufacturer in your area, they pay the best prices for old junk batteries. I got $12 for my old MC battery and $15 for an old car battery. -
Won't crank...see symptoms below

It is a common failure mode for a battery to read normal voltage with just the meter and no other load, but then the voltage just is not there under load. Now with the starter on the bench, there is still not much of a load. Best is to have the battery load tested. Yup there were a couple of posts that would have saved you from pulling the starter. -
I sure hope that this will be the trick. :fingers-crossed-emo

stater magnet STUCK!
Flyinfool replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can disagree, but you can not change the laws of physics. The vibration that the magnets put up with during normal use is a sinusoidal wave form. That means it is a smooth motion back and forth. This will not bother the magnets. A sharp impact like a hammer blow can damage the magnets by causing the magnetic poles to try to align with the earths magnetic field. Remember the old science experiment in school? Where you take a nail, hold it in your hand and smack it with a hammer, it becomes a magnet. You are doing the same thing to the magnets in the flywheel when they see a sharp impact. You are changing their magnetic field. The heat the the flywheel sees in normal use is not all that hot, it is well under 200°F at all times. The magnets start to loose power at 400°F. Heating the flywheel to 200°F will not have much if any effect on the fit of the taper, If it did there would be flywheels getting loose all of the time. Hot enough to make a difference, will conduct out toward the magnets possibly weakening them if they get to 400°F. My impact wrench was not near enough torque to break mine loose. Your impact wrench may be stronger than mine or my flywheel may have been tighter than yours. I turned the puller screw a good half turn or more past where the impact could go before it POPed. If I were doing it again, I would start with the impact wrench, If it did not come I would get out the breaker bar and pipe. The good news is; The big difficulty is only if this is the first time the flywheel has ever come off, any time after it will be a lot easier. I do not know if the factory torques the bolt to more than the book calls for, or if it is just from being there for 25 years and is well seated. -
what does this look like
Flyinfool replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It sure looks like it got a bit warm. That coil getting hot would be from an excessive power draw on which ever circuit it was monitoring. (I don't remember which coil was for which circuit. CRS syndrome) As long as non of the traces on the back side are damaged, that coil getting hot most likely will not damage anything. If that is from your bike, you will want to find out what was pulling so much power to make it get that hot. A fuse should have blown before it got that hot. -
stater magnet STUCK!
Flyinfool replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
First off, do NOT use heat or pounding on the rotor, As mentioned you can permanently damage the magnets. Then You will be chasing a charging issue for the next year till you figure out it is the magnets causing weak output of the stator. I tied a rope from the puller to the bike frame so that when it did POP it could not go anywhere. Most people just make a nice soft landing pad. when the flywheel does POP it does it with a BANG and it will cover some distance in the process. I don't know if I would want to try to catch it. I used a big wrench on the hex of the flywheel to hold it steady and a 3 foot breaker bar plus some pipe, on the puller drive. My 1/2 inch drive impact wrench was laughed at by the flywheel. Wear safety glasses just in case one of the hardened parts of the puller shatter during the pull. Many cheap pullers, and some good ones, have been broken pulling off that flywheel. I have one that I bought 30 years ago back when they made tools strong to last. A gear puller with the grip fingers will not get it done, I do not think any of them are strong enough. You need a good harmonic balance puller and you want to use grade 12.9 screws to attach it to the flywheel. Use high strength washers under the screw heads. the 3 attaching screws only should be finger tight, if you use a wrench on then then they already have some tensile load and will fail sooner while pulling. Make sure that you put a big enough high strength washer or other piece of steel to protect the threads of the crankshaft from the puller. I used that big breaker bar and pulled till I was sure something was going to break and then went some more till it finally let go. -
I just carry a folding lug wrench. IF I ever have to change a tire on the road the plan is to first unload the trailer, then break loose the lugs, then unhook the coupler and tip it onto its side to R&R the wheel, then tip back upright, hook to the bike, and tighten the lugs and reload. If the surface was such that I was concerned about scratching the trailer, I will use the sleeping bag or pillow under the trailer. If thee is a convenient tree, wall, or post I can stand it up on the back bumper, I store it standing on the back bumper leaning against a wall. Since I have the spare mounted to the bottom of the trailer to keep it out of the way, I almost have to tip it on its side to get at the spare anyhow.

Find out more about the accident that it was in. Many bikes are totaled with only cosmetic damage. BUT if any of the suspension was damaged and repaired you would want to look closely at the frame mounting points for damage or repair. With damage to both sides there is a possibility that the bike tumbled and could have hidden structural damage. Also check you state laws as to what is involved if you were to try to resell it some day. I am not saying to stay away from it, just do your homework and check things out throughly. It is easy to fall in love with something and overlook things that should not be overlooked.

You may need rib protection and a cup also..........
