  1. Hey Shmiliy, you know any Obert's over there in Columbus??? They're probably related to me ('specially south-siders...)
  2. Done did, that's why the ?????.... Thanks Morph, with checking the forecast for THAT area of the country for the MD weekend, we'll confirm if we're actually gonna ride up there.....
  3. Is it possible to do this with no headphones/mikes installed yet? Looking to improve communications in the future.... If so, put me on the list
  4. I myself was not allowed to join (flat feet in 75, them trying to get soldiers out, not in...), but I am also humbly proud of those who did get the chance to serve as my father was one of those foot soldiers in the winter of the Korean war. I just wish that the thought of continuing to serve the US through joining one of the patriotic groups (American Legion, DAV, etc) and those groups continuing to spread the patriotic diligence that they used to would continue to grow and be as popular as they once used to be. I too appreciate deeply the profound sacrifice that those who did not get a chance to "get their check back" gave this country.
  5. Being a master electrician, I think you pretty much have good grounding conduction there....
  6. Just got mine in, glad I saw it tonight.....
  7. Heck Dan, this time of night usually doesn't get that clear an answer from you!
  8. You talkin' bout this then, huh?! I discovered this on Big Dudes bike a couple of years ago. It's the knuckle gear into the back of the middle gear to drive it. Yammers replacement included a shorter, lighter spring behind the gear.....I think Here's some pics...
  9. I can vouch for that, little over a year ago they all stood up for me and I am STILL grateful for it. Dang near back to regular riding, just took my wife on her first one since then, last night to dinner.
  10. These motors, especially the 83's and 84's, were built for power out the driveshaft! The higher the rpm, the better the "running" ability of them. Gas mileage will actually be better without "lugging" the engine (as you have a lot of unburnt gas doing that) and performance if needed will be available at any time! You must spend time adjusting yourself to this, experiment to find out exactly where your motor (rpm) is happy cruising at. If your increase in throttle comes very easy without any delay in corresponding rpm/speedometer rising together (easier to watch than feel), then you are becoming knowledgeable about the performance abilties of your powerplant. Oh yeah, you might want to pick the front wheel up in first and second a few times to see how much is available! If'n I remember right from my 84, best powerband and fuel mileage came between 3800 and 4500 rpm's. This would be shifting up at 4500 and cruising around 3800. However, if your young neighbor down the street thinks he can beat you (ask Muffinman!), these motors can easily go up to around 7900-8200 rpm's without floating the valves but horsepower starts to flatten out around 65-6900 rpm's. Remember, with the 1200's you've got the early editions of the V-Max motor buried in there! Makes riding a supposed "touring" bike a lot of fun if you want it! Oh, another bit of advice, on the 83- 85-1/2"s, they had a "soft" split washer on the tranny output over at the middle gear end (left side of motor), it would wear enuff to allow 2nd gear to disengage itself under power input and "slip". There was a recall on this, and if it was done, I know they put a "mark" on the frame or motor somewhere down by the middle gear cover but don't remember exactly where/what it was. Maybe Dingy will jump in here to let you know.....
  11. I remember riding over 14,000 ft mountains out north of Cody, Wy a couple of years ago....
  12. Good thing I moved out of south Columbus 30+ years ago, or you'd have to eat dinner twice last night!
  13. I like her cheesecake, so I hope Lonna's OK!
  14. That's what was double purpose, both mounting steps and highway boards.
  15. I guess you'd want to undercut the pins(5th gear) and slots(2nd gear) then, that way you can NEVER get 2nd gear to slip again! :cool10:
  16. Annie, you might bring a couple of Aussie stickers to put on my/ours/your old trailer you pulled around a couple of years ago to put on it after I paint it to match my 08'!! We'll see you and Alan up at Don's this year!
  17. I see that you've got it packed into the garage quite well, that way you won't have to move it around when you need something!! Now it's easier to just walk out there and look at it!!
  18. I knew your VR "trouble-detector" would wake you up!!!
  19. Wow Annie, no replies just yet..... I'll bet Cleveland, TX isn't close enuff to Squidley's house for him to come out and see you and Alan!!!
  20. Probably so. If there is a hole or tear in the vacuum unit rubber somewhere, it will bleed air back into it quickly. That's why they have you wait the 5 seconds to see if there is a leak.
  21. Just a pic of the middle gear "knuckle" I was talking about. This is looking into the left rear of the motor after removing the rear wheel, driveshaft, tube and rear u-joint cover and back half of the middle gear pinion gear.
  22. Because we are FAMILY here, as I can attest to after you'alls help to me a year and a half ago..... We all help to hold each other up (or down, right Yammer?!) with our donations or written feelings. Maybe we need to show why we felt that way to do the donation....
  23. What I would do to isolate the grinding noise: Put it on center stand, remove the middle gear cover (back one on left side, put the bottom screw back in to keep any oil in there from draining out, won't be much), all you will see in there is the "captive" tranny output shaft bearing and end of that shaft. Put in 1st gear and see if you can rotate the back tire by hand, watching the tranny output shaft end (side cover removed) turn or not. If it turns, problem is in the tranny and/or clutch side gears. If it doesn't, and the tire turns, you can listen for the noise from the side cover back to the rear gear. In here, you've got middle "pinion gear" gear setup (had to replace the "drive knuckle" on the tranny shaft that feeds power to the middle gear for a guy once), U-joint on the "output shaft", drive shaft, then input into the rear gear. If it doesn't turn in 1st, try shifting into 2nd gear and see if the wheel can turn. If it does and so does the tranny shaft, THEN the possibility of a "bad" 2nd gear connection comes into play. But you've got an '88, so the 2nd gear issue isn't involved here. Otherwise, we'd have to look at other possibilities! Make sure you have looked at the parts pictures available thru Yamaha at most parts places to familiarize yourself with the drive train.
