  1. John is not out of business. He just doesn't have a website anymore. Contact him either on Facebook or phone, 610-509-8629. He just did mine a couple of months ago.
  2. Yes, I can see the two lower mounting screws. Can't see the upper side mounts without removing the lower cowlings. The top center of the grill is slotted to clear the radiator mounting bolt. I've had it mounted for years. Never a problem. Don't remember it being a pain to install. I do remember something about having to bend the mounting tabs (easy) to make it fit properly.
  3. Since this is the best trip advisor that I know of, I am asking for recommendations. Niagara Falls has always been on my bucket list. My wife and I will be flying; will only be a few days trip. I have heard that the views are better from the Canadian side. We have passports and am open to either side. Not looking for the cheapest. Not at all opposed to one of the high rise hotels for the best views. Would also like to take one of the tours while there. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks in advance.
  4. That looks like the one that I have on my RSTD.
  5. According to Shinko's website, the smaller 130/90/16 is a 73 load weight which is 805#. Their 150/80/16 is a 71 which equals 761#. Makes no sense to me. I also run the smaller (Michelin) front tire with the front forks raised about 3/8" with no problem. I too will be trying these Shinkos next time.
  6. I wish the Scout had a larger fuel tank. It is only 3.3 gal.
  7. I agree with Puc that the Michelin Commanders are "so-so in the twisties". I am on my second set now and have felt the front slip more than once in the twisties. They don't seem to wear any better either. If I can get 10,000 miles out of a tire, front or rear, I am lucky. I think that the Dunlops E3 stuck better, but I can't stand the loud howl they emit when worn about half way. The Shinkos are looking like my next set of tires.
  8. Saturday looks like a good day for a ride. I talked to Rob the other day. He said that he is getting a new Venture in for a demo in a couple of weeks. I may take him up on his offer to take her for a spin.
  9. Rob, the general manager at Grand Prix, aka Indian of the Rockies, is my neighbor. I bought my '06 RSTD there new and my son bought his Indian there last year. Like others here, anxious to hear your opinions on your new bike. We will have to ride up Deer Creek Canyon Rd. and scrap off some of your new floor boards.

  11. I would not go bigger than 4". Too big of a pipe (6") will allow the solids to build up in the bottom of the pipe. You need the water to scour the entire pipe to keep it clean. This problem is compounded with the newer low water flow toilets. I second Cowpuc's recommendation to buy a hammer drill or hammer from HF and to run the line above ground if at all possible.
  12. The quick release feature for the windshield and luggage rack are nice, but offer no theft protection. I've been thinking of doing this since I bought the bike in '06 but just now got around to it. The SS "Pin-in-hex" screws require a special tamper resistant allen wrench. Of course this does not make them theft proof, but will hopefully slow down the opportunist thief. The screws lock the quick-release lever from moving. Drilling the luggage rack was easy as it is just mild steel. The windshield being stainless was a little tougher. I suppose you could do just one side, but I did both. I couldn't find the screws I wanted from Ace so sourced them from McMaster-Carr. If anyone else would like to do this, PM me with your address and I will put a few in the mail for you (I guess they will go through the mail ok). You will need to supply your own allen wrench.
  13. I read that this guy is the US dealer. Don't know about Canada. I have no personal experience. https://www.davequinnmotorcycles.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/home.html
  14. The 13 ft. lb. under the RSTD section is a typo. 2.2 is correct.
  15. Think about it. In the not too distant future, a young healthy person has his DNA profile in one of these in one of these data banks. Now a rich person somewhere in the world has a disease that requires a very specific organ. That young healthy person who just wanted to know where he came from is never heard from again. Hey, it could happen.
  16. I checked the parts' fiche and the bearings are the same part number for both the RSTD and Venture. Hard to believe that the torque values would be different. Fairing or not.
  17. Have '06 RSTD and decided to replace the steering head bearings. Still in the "reading up on it" stage. No problems, but given all of the previous comments with lack of grease decided that it is a good time to do it. I have the Yamaha service manual which is basically the Venture manual with a forward section with relevant RSTD info. This is where I found a discrepancy. On page #36 in the RSTD section under "Checking and adjusting the steering head" it shows the lower ring initial tightening of 37 ft. lb. (52Nm) and the final tightening of 13 ft. lb. (18Nm). On page # 3-45 which is the Venture section under "Checking and adjusting the steering head" shows lower ring initial tightening of 37 ft. lb. (52Nm) but a final tightening of 2.2 ft. lb. (3Nm). These same values are repeated on page 7-61 in the Venture section under "Steering Head". All of the sections state in bold type: "Do not overtighten the lower ring nut". I know that others have pointed out incorrect information in the manual. Does anyone know which value is correct?
  18. I own a 2013 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost for my service truck. Prior to it, I owned a 2001 Dodge ¾ ton with the 5.9L Cummins diesel. I had a chip and a high flow air filter in the Dodge. The Ford is stock. Both trucks are (were) loaded with tools and equipment. More in the Dodge but not that much more. I am very impressed with how the Ford handles the amount of weight that I have in it without sitting on the overloads. My point here is that on I-70 heading Eastbound from Silverthorn, CO to the Eisenhower Tunnel at Loveland Pass which is 12 miles and an elevation increase of 2,150', the Ford pulls it without breaking a sweat. The Dodge would loose speed in 4th (high) gear and when dropping to third I had to keep an eye on the turbo temperature as it would overheat if I kept my foot in it. I am very impressed with this truck. 70,000 miles currently and no problems. I did have 320,000 miles on the Dodge when I got rid of it, but should have dumped it by 250,000 miles as too many things started going wrong. But I will say, no problems with the Cummins itself.
  19. My son bought a 2017 Chieftain Limited that has the full fairing but no lowers (has smaller front fender). He says that it doesn't run any hotter than his previous V-Rod. He is very pleased with it.
