You don't have to "join" anything. You don't have to be a veteran. You don't have to ride a motorcycle. All you have to do is show up to those missions you can and show honor. The national site will always list the active missions coming up. Go to this http://patriotguard.org/Home/tabid/53/Default.aspx and scroll down. All missions are on the right hand side. As mentioned by others you can sign up and notify the state ride captain that you would like to be on the mailing list for missions or you can just check the website when ever you will be available for a mission. Remember Show up for the missions you can Show honor and respect for those we have lost, and their families Show restraint by being a proud and silent wall between any "uninvited guest" and the family if so required. Freedom sometimes brings irony...case in point...the right of those "people" to protest and spew their hatred at the funerals of those who protected their right to protest! It is really good to see the impact of this...resulting in the interest in the Patriot Guard Riders. You will be proud when you support the missions! Over 350 Missions to date.... covering 7 New England States and now MS.,LA., and East Texas. Our troops KNOW we have their backs....and they love us for it !! When I was a kid, merely spitting towards the flag was unheard of. Now, burning and stomping this symbol of our nation is simply considered freedom of speech. I had never heard of this group before I read this thread yesterday. As soon as I read the first few posts, I went to the website, joined, purchased a few items, and intend to participate whenever possible. Having served in the Armed Services during wartime (USN '73-77), I have real respect for our brothers and sisters that make this commitment to our country. It will be my pleasure to show respect for these fallen soldiers and shield their friends and families when necessary. My Dad, also a USN vet (Korean conflict), will be 80 this year. I will be asking him to request PGR attendance when it is time for his final mission. I've already asked my wife to make sure that happens when it is my turn... Since that time, we have only had the protesters here twice, and both times, we had hundreds of patriots show up to shield the families so that they never even knew they were there. We form a wall of flags, turn our backs to the hate mongers, and never, ever acknowledge them at all. The local law enforcement literally surrounds them for their own protection so that passers by won't kill them. One cop told me that they just stare at them in hopes that they will cross the 500 foot barrier by one inch, so they can arrest them for violating the law. At one protest, they even had the paddy wagon there just in case, and in full view of the protesters so they knew they were serious. I still try to make these PGR honor missions when I can, but we also make every effort to love on our military and veterans while they are still with us through the Warriors Watch Riders and their various "feel good" missions. It really balances things out emotionally for us, so that we don't "burn out" on the constant requests we get for funeral missions. You can check them out at http://www.warriorswatch.org. Agree with your concept but, it's not "the law" the Supreme Court interpreted in this case, it's the Constitution. Or am I wrong, again? Much as these people disgust me, I think the Court was right in this case... These demented people make their living and support their "church" by suing guys like us that threaten or abuse them when they are protesting. They truly are disturbed, misguided people. The members at a mission are going to do their best to not allow any of our members to get physical/confrontational with any UG's. I have "talked down" several people (PGR and non) that were about to attempt to do something that they shouldn't. In the early days, when we were all new at this, it may have been a larger concern, but today we unfortunately have quite a bit of experience with the UG's and we know how to help new members deal with them. It is true, though that some folks just can't handle the stress of the flag line. It is often difficult, there is no shame in that, and there are other places where we can use your help. If you go to youtube and you will see what they actually do. They are lucky they have not come to Alabama. They are very lucky that someone has not blown up all of them while they are in their church. Trust me, you watchem on youtube...You WILL get mad.. Our mission is to stand for them in their loss and grief and help them to know that there are still people who are aware of the sacrifice their families have made and to show our honor and respect for their service. The PGR mission is only completed at the request of the family. It's a necessary part of our respect for them. It also has nothing to do with any organized hate groups that conduct protests to hurt them. We shield our families with our care and support. While we stand that line or escort, nothing matters to us except our hero and family. We respect the right to free speech recognized in our country's founding documents. It's one of the freedoms that define America. Many of our members have served and sworn an oath to support these rights. As an organization, we have to respect the decision of the courts even though our membership has diverse views on the limitation of free speech. Such limitations have been established previously to object to "hate speech" that only offers protection to designated individuals or groups. The true travesty in this is that we would ever need to consider the "right" of someone to protest at the funeral of an American military member that has given their oath and life to defend these rights. The Patriot Guard Riders will always stand to honor and shield our fallen and their families. Our mission is founded on respect, and honor, and the debt we owe those that protect us. I'm glad the PGR in WI is also doing some of these missions for our active military and retired veterans. It's important. Our WWR group in GA is doing a welcome home mission tomorrow for two brothers in the Army - - one returning from A-stan on leave, and his younger brother who just finished boot camp and will be shipped off shortly (destination unknown). Showing these guys the love is a huge boost to them and their family, and reinforces the WWR mission that no American Warrior will ever be forgotten, ignored or scorned ever again. Right after that, I'll be standing with my PGR brothers and sisters for a Vietnam Vet who passed away on Monday. He may never have had anyone tell him "welcome home" while he was with us, but we're sure not going to let that happen ever again. God help any UG's (uninvited guests!) who dare to show up for either of these missions! They will be the one's who are ignored and scorned. They are coming to Ky to protest Catholic and Protestent churches this weekend. They said God hates Catholics and false prohet churches. C.R.
