  1. Well, Squidley asked for an update so here is a quick one. First pic is the bike 30 minutes after I got it. Tore off the touring fairing, trunk, rack and hiways bars. It was perty darn dirty. Second pic is a bit cleaned up. She is only down two inches in the rear with shorter shocks and one in the front by sliding the tubes up the trees. Rick butler cut some of the foam out of the king/queen seat. Next weekend, the forks will drop 2 1/2 inches internally and I will still have the 1 inch to play with on the forks/trees as needed. The 16" rim and spokes are here to drop the rear another inch (currently an 18" rim) but the back tire I wanted is on backorder - http://www.bikebandit.com/product/3617 Front is already here. Still got plenty of cleaning to do but I am having a blast doing it. Had to forget powdercoating the rims and hubs because the car asked for it.
  2. Has anyone here replaced a tire that Ride-On had been used in?? Was it still as water soluable as when it was put in? Any mess when it was taken off the rim???
  3. As a serious CT prospect, I encountered this on Dunlop's website. I was actually looking for real tech info for a friends question why he could not run "front" tire on rear and vice versa. So, do any of your guys have the equipment and a spare rim to actually measure a 15" motorcycle rim and a 15" car rim and report? I think equipment to measure thousandth would be in order. Here is the quote from Dunlop's site: For 15-inch motorcycle replacement tires, never mount on a 15-inch diameter passenger car tire rim. Mount only on a 15 M/C motorcycle rim. These passenger car and motorcycle rims actually differ in diameter. This statement is on this page: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_tiretips.asp?id=27#tip
  4. I learned a hard lesson today. If you mess with the laws of gravity, something is going to get dented! I had my bike sitting in the driveway idling. It must have been on a slight incline and the vibrations must have moved it slightly forward. As I turned around I got to witness the bike going over on its side. Sad day for me. I picked it up and was thankful that the crash bars were there and did their job as the tank did not get bent. The worst thing was the head light rim got dented and scratched along with the left had top portion of the windshield. Anyone know where I can get a new headlight rim? Don't mess with gravity!
  5. I removed the Avon today, as not enough tread left for the Calif Trip next month. Will keep it mounted on my spare rim. Ok I installed the New Dunlop E 3 ( MU90B16 ) today. Cleaned up the rim, used Vasoline on new tire and rim, mounting was quite easy with standard hand tools. Removeing the AVON, was not easy !!! I measured the tread on new tire, 5/16 inch at center, and 1/4 at edges of tire. I also measured the caseing thickness, as best I can measure it seems to be 1/2 inch thick, plus the Wearable Tread thickness. The tire Tread is 5 Ply, ( 3 Nylon, and 2 Fiberglass) The tire Sidewall is 3 Ply, Nylon Max loading is 937 lb. at 40 PSI cold. Dunlop sells this in the belted model, and the Radial. ( Radial sizes won't fit 1st Gen) I got the tire from RonAyers.com Greenville N.C. $113.95, which included the UPS to Seattle. So, will start milage tests with this tire. I put in a can of "Ride-ON " and went for a 20 mile test ride, All seems just fine !!! Time will tell. Also, anybody been running these tires on a Gold Wing, or know sombody that does use them on a Wing. ??? Would be interesting to find some Feedback from Wing users of these new E 3 Series Dunlops made for the Goldwings. ?? Or has anybody mounted one on a 2nd Gen ???
  6. I picked up a rear rim to have cleaned and powdercoated. As I examine the hub area I see the dampers where the lugs fasten. As the powdercoat process heats up to 400 deg. F. I need to remove the dampers. Any tricks to this or is it a simple press out procedure. Also, is there a reinstall procedure or measurement? I would guess uneven installation would cause runout and wobbles. Also thinking that deteriorated rubber would cause the same problems. Just a thought on the decelleration wobble idea. JB
  7. Has anyone changed the original 3.5 X 16 front to a 4.5 X 18. If so how did it work out?
  8. A couple of weeks ago I bought a set of new Avon tires and changed them myself paying close attention to the directional arrows after a week of riding I checked the air pressure and while checking the front tire I noticed that the front rim had a direction arrow which of course is mounted the wrong direction. I had no idea that the rim was directional or why it is, can anyone tell me the reason for this?
  9. I made a revision on my Harber Freight tire changer today. Was looking at NoMar tire changer site the other day and noticed they had a new clamp down for their changer which uses some small plastic spools. I then found that they sold the spools and screws for $12. Did a search for options on purchace of spools and found an article on a GL1800 forum were a guy had added these spools to his HF. So I ordered the spools and purchased 3 ea. 3" x 1-1/2" x 1/4" flat bar and taped for the screws on the 1/4" plate and then mounted them on the HF tire changer. Had to change the front tire so I tried it out and it worked great. Just a little slip but you can strap a spoke to the cross bar and take care of that. The tire no longer pops out while trying to get the tire over the rim on the first bead. No more worrying about scrathed rims using rags or thin rubber. It worked great. This is the spools. I used 2 washers under the spools so they now give plenty clearance for the disk. The screws are 5/16 x 18 . A few pics of the set up. On one pic you can see the rideon on the rim (some had ask how messy it was). Just wiped it off with a damp rag. Very little gets on the rim, see the 2 pics of the tires and all of the rideon is lined all the way around the bottom of the tire.
  10. As I mentioned awhile back, I recently had my carbs synched, rear drive serviced, head bearings serviced and adjusted and new Metz Commanders installed. I love how the Metz track and the twisties are a WHOLE lot more fun. The bike leans itself into the turns (or so it seems) and all of the wobble is gone. Low rpm power is much improved and the bike is very pleassurable at all speeds. A problem though. Reat tire has a slow leak. About 5lbs per week. When we pulled the tire off the rear, it was full of green Slime. What a mess. I have inspected the rear tire and found no nails etc. Ran soapy water all around tire and rim, and checked the valve stem. No apparent leaks. Because the PO had installed Slime, I am suspicious of a leaking rim. Anybody with experience with this sort of problem and any easy fixes short of wheel replacement? Will Ride-On work for this type of problem? DJ
  11. I have been using Ride-On for several years now and have been happy with the product. Now I have some doubts. Last year when I changed my tires the shop had complained at how bad the Ride-On had gunked up the rims inside and he had a heck of a time trying to clean up the area. This time I had the shop pull the tires off and I brought the rims home to clean up myself prior to having the new tires installed. I couldnt believe the mess that was in there. Most of the Ride-on was caked on and thick. I had to use Goo Gone and a razor to scrape away the mess. Then used a wire detail brush and 150 grit sandpaper to finish off the inside of the rims. Most of the sealer was built up around the area that the tire seats to the rim (bead area). It worked its way up between the bead and the rim too. Some have said that it just wipes away.....not in this case. I spent several hours cleaning those rims and I still have a bit more to go on the front rim. This is not a condemnation of the product as it works well, but rather a warning to those who use it that when you change tires, clean up the mess inside at each tire change, not wait until several changes to do so. It just might save you some valuable riding time.
  12. :detective:Well took the old gal in for her 8K service, and decided to replace the OEM tires, back one was getting that flat look and the tread was almost down to the wear indicators. It was like a last minute thought while i was there, and had to take what they had if i wanted to ride, this past weekend. Well i got the M880and will se for my self what happens. Anyway, i get home and park the bike, the 40 mile ride was really great bike handled a whol lot better. We after an Earlie morning No A/C service call I go around back to clean baby up for a ride and just happened to look at the front tire, to see what date code was on it, no biggie 2107 pretty new there, so im happy, then i take notice of a rotation arrow on the Rim, its pointing up, and the tire rotation is pointing down.... wheels turning in my head, like ok what isnt right here.... well the rim was put back on backwards... Needless to say i came unglued, and called the dealers service dept. . Now my feeling is Yamaha didnt go through the casting trouble for nothing, so it should be installed the right way with the arrow going in the forward direction of the bike. ... I was told it was ok, and that it was on there for speedo reasons, because that rim is used on other bikes. and that it was ok to ride like that. He couldnt change it because no mechanic was there to do that til tuesday. I was still leary and said there goes my weekend, or something like that, He then said hold on a second and it was like seconds and he was talking to some one, and when he came back he told me to bring the bike right up and they would change it. Now is there any concern with the rim? while in the show room i did go check out another Royal star, it was the Tour delux and the rim marking was in the right direction. Any thoughts.......
  13. Will an 86-93 rear rim and rotor fit on an 83-85 Venture, and also without having to change the rotor if it does?? I have a '88 rim and I thought it might be easier to take it down to the local bike store and have a new VenomX I have mounted on it and then do the R&R on the '83 all at once.
