  1. To make that math work the distance from the axel to the hitch would have to be approx 5.6 times the distance from the axel to the center of gravity of the load (trailer and bike). Call it 6. Not all the weight is ahead of the axel. If the COG is 2 ft ahead of the axel the span has to be 12 ft.
  2. I pulled it at interstate highway speeds for 300 miles with no issues, even with my Highlander which is basically a Camry. I used to have a side-on photo from when I stopped at The Prodigal Son in Pendleton, OR. Highly recommend that as a scooter stop if you are traveling by. Anyway, haven't found the photo yet.
  3. Yes, now that we can see the bike is very close to the axel (not centered between) that takes a lot of the theoretical weight off the tongue. I suppose Uhaul had this figured out anyway, but still, it is fun to try to remember basic physics.
  4. In this picture you can see the bike weight is very close to the axel and not placing most weight on the tongue.
  5. If centered between the axel and the tongue, the bike would put 775/2 = 387.5 on both the tongue and the axel. The trailer has to be pretty balanced since I can easily pick up the tongue when it is empty to hook it up. So less than 25?? on the tongue from that. And then take back off the tongue any bike wgt * ft behind the axel (fulcrum). Call it 400 and change? Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. 6. Well... if everything was perfectly centered, the weight would be split between the axel and the tongue. It looks like the engine is closer to the axel but the photo may be deceiving.
  7. No cover - 300 miles to go.
  8. I think they changed the law in Oregon so you would have to do a background check etc even for a private barter.
  9. Well, that was exciting!
  10. Here's my bike on the Buena Vista ferry over the Willamette River. It's part of a great little ride near home I often enjoy. There's a steep ramp where drivers wait for the boat. I usually shut off the bike, leave it in 1st with the kickstand down and chill. But somehow waiting was more chill on my 89 Venture than it is on my 09 RSTD. Not sure why, but I felt that I could get off of the 89, but I'm relucant to even let go of the bars on the rstd. To me, the difference is the kick stand. Maybe it is the angle maybe it is my imagination. Makes me nervous. But the ride is worth it.
  11. Better pictures....
  12. My first sync on my 2009 RSTD using my DigitalCarbSync.com gadget. Photo a little jittery plus the protective layer is still on the lcd. I don't think it had ever been done before. Hoses were really stuck on and the sync was off by more than the equivalent of a half inch of mercury old school. Took it out for a ride and it is nice and tight - that little raggedy feeling is gone. Pulled this snippet from an old post by goose: Just for future reference, the shop manual specifies 280 mmHg at idle, and variation between carbs of no more than 10 mmHg or .4 inHg. Mine are now within 0.1 inHg of each other. In theory, the 152 reading implies 320 mmHg at idle but without a tach on to set the idle - and other minor variations due to test conditions (old 9v battery, temperature, altitude, atmospheric pressure, etc) - I would not bet on it. I would bet that the idle is higher than spec. That's something for my next version. I have the software built-in but it has never been adequately tested and developed.
  13. I got $2500 for my 89 a couple of years ago if I remember right. Good pictures and a firm price on Craigslist, and waited for a Venture buyer. Didn't take long. It was in pretty good shape and clean. I had everything except the cruise working. I patched the seat with a liquid vinyl product and it looked good enough so you wouldn't notice unless you were looking for it. I replaced the front fender decoration. The side vents weren't perfect. I had reworked and resoldered the board to solve the E4 error. I rebuilt the bypass plumbing to solve the coolant leak (to prevent warp core breech!!). New diaphragms.
  14. Once you get this cleared up I think you will have to keep Seafoam (or similar) in it all the time if you regularly leave it parked for long spells. I assume you keep it on a battery tender, but if not, start doing that. I use a solar one on the roof of my carport. It sounds like you are running on less than 4. If you can find out which are not firing test to see if you are getting spark. If so, you've got some carb work to do, and there are plenty of threads on here to recover without doing a full dismantle and carb job. If you are lucky - but figure out first things first.
  15. I'm getting about 41 mpg on my new 09 rstd. Mostly highway driving with the rev's up. That's ok. When the weather gets a bit warmer I'll get my digital carb sync gizmo and my new long jis screwdriver out to sync the carbs.
  16. Renewing this old thread. I was at an Aerostitch roadshow event in Portland today. I wanted to get measured officially so I can shop for their gear. Spendy stuff - if I buy I want it to fit. They have something I hadn't seen before - old school waxed cotton. http://www.aerostich.com/suits/one-piece-suits/cousin-jeremy/men-s-cousin-jeremy-one-piece-suit.html
  17. In the west they say whiskey is for drinking; water is for fighting. There's gonna be a lot of fighting in the years ahead. Hopefully, some whiskey drinking, too, at least for me. And coffee will be $8 per cup for artisanal free-range blah blah blah. It already is in Portland. The local donut shop has good $1 coffee, but then there are those 2 donuts that follow me home!!
  18. Does the paper feed over the top or around the bottom?
  19. Even electric Harleys leak oil!
  20. S models have a chrome fork. At least, that's the only diff on a RSTD.
  21. And there is that whole sacred cow thing!
  22. Looks like a nice re-use of an old Moto Guzzi engine. Here was my guzzi before I came back to V4.
  23. had my 09 out today. 50 degrees and dry-ish today. great cruiser. a LOT of bike for not much money. 12k on it when I bought it in October. V4, bags, boards, glass and, well, just look.
