  1. I've been battling some clutch chatter in mine all season, had my mechanic take a look and he replaced the oil pump drive gear that's on the back of the clutch basket (outer cage) and seemed to quiet it down a bit. The noise is still there though so I'm wondering if the clutch basket it's self may be bad and therefore allowing that gear to slop around. As for your slop in the transmission input shaft, mine is the same way so I'm guessing it's normal. I was worried that the slop in the input shaft was the problem but my guy says it feels normal to him. My next step is to take the clutch back out and see if I can shim that gear. The gear slop in the rotational direction was next to none, but there was some freedom in the axial direction so I'll work on getting rid of that. Also, my mechanic told me that I have an aftermarket Barrnett clutch basket rather than the stock Yamaha part, That may have something to do with it.
  2. So, my clutch has been making some racket for a while now, I've ordered new friction plates and a clutch cover gasket, should be able to do the tear down next week when parts arrive. My question for the group is, has anyone else experienced clutch chatter on these bikes (mine is an 09 RSTD by the way, 35k miles) and if so were you able to fix er up with new friction plates or did you have to replace the clutch spring as well? Secondly, I'm considering upgrading the clutch to include the fancy coil spring pressure plate the Barnett makes, has anyone used these? and if so, what was your experience with them? Thanks!!!! Here's a link to the pressure plate..... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Barnett-Spring-Conversion-Kit-511-90-10002-Yamaha/332419867144?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
  3. Blocked the AIS tonight, thought I’d share these cool little plugs I found at my local auto parts store. They’re 3/4” expansion plugs, cost $3 ea. Worked great and was still able to Recconect time the hoses over the top of them.
  4. Quick update.....I haven't had time to block the AIS yet, but I did sync up the carbs and drop the old oil. I can't believe the difference, I thought it was running great before but after carb sync the difference is incredible! As for the noise, I tried getting a good recording of it, but road noise and wind made it pretty difficult. However, when I was tinkering around with it in my driveway, I was able to get the noise (albeit much quieter without the driving load) by throttling up a bit and letting off, I can also get the rattle if let the clutch out really quickly. It sounded to me like it was coming from the clutch cover. So, next project will be doing the clutch. Any advice on process / parts when doing this job?
  5. thanks bongo, sounds like I have some bad riding habits I’ll have to get past. I’ve definitely been driving like a Harley, didn’t realize these bikes were designed that way today I’m going to check for the radiator cover issue, plug the AIS and sync the carbs. Just got my carb sync mamomiter today so we’ll give it a go. Oh, I’ll also drop the oil and put in some fresh 15w-40 and see where we end up. If the noise still hangs around, I’ll try to get a recording of it and post it on here. thanks for your help! It’s very much appreciated!
  6. Thanks for your advice! Much appreciated, what oil is recommended? I did just put new 10w-30 motorcycle oil in, maybe that oil has something to do with the noise?
  7. Well, A I just ordered a motionpro carb sync tool from ebay, a little pricey but seems like a worth while tool to have. I'm getting a bit of an engine knock at deceleration so I thought I'd check the carb sync before digging into it further. Does anyone have any experience with out of sync carbs causing engine noise? Or am I just being hopeful here? Thanks
  8. Hey all I’m new to the venture scene, if I’m hoping someone might be able to give me some advice. Just bought a 2009 royal star 1300 (XVZ13CT), I just did the valves and a carb sync this week. The bike runs perfectly aside from a noticeable knock sound when letting off of the throttle just slightly. The sound only rears it’s ugly head when the bike is warm and goes away upon acceleration or full off on the throttle. Only happens while driving/under load. Any idea what it might be? Rod knock? thanks in advance after thought....if the carb sync isn’t good, could that cause a knock from one of the Pistons??
