Been doing some research. It appears as though a vmax exhaust setup (prior to 2007) "should" fit into a venture royale, at least the headers should bolt up, since they used the venture royale engine in the vmax. It looks as though the exhaust is obviously more up swept then the venture royale 1300 exhaust. Has anybody ever attempted this feat.? They have some really nice vmax exhausts. Even if one were to buy vmax headers the number of aftermarket slip ons is way better than the venture royale's (a.k.a. NONE).

Slipping clutch on my 89 royale
dz replied to dz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I know about the great oil debate. I drained the oil this past weekend and got specific 20w-50 valvoline motorcycle wet clutch oil (advanced auto was having a sale). In my other bikes i have been using Rotella 15w-40. In my nicer suv I use mobile fully synthetic 10w-30. This isn't my first bike, just seeing if this is a common problem or not. Hopefully it will stay nice for some part of the weekend and I will bleed the clutch and see how that goes. Bike has 66,000 miles on it so it may be do for a clutch rebuild. Thanks. -
Well, I think it's time I address the slipping clutch. If I ride the bike normally the clutch does not slip at all. If I dump clutch it or rev it up to 6500 and speed shift you can feel it slipping. I don't want to race the bike but I don't want to have the clutch slip if I am in a situation where it would prove bad. Is there anything I should be looking for outside of the clutch (i.e. worn slave cylinder or faulty master cylinder)?

The saga continues, got her on the road though
dz replied to dz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, the saga continues again. I had her out for about 90 miles on saturday, trouble free miles at the time. I've replaced all of the carb. diaphragms, all new spark plugs, and a half can of sea foam to the tank with new fuel before I went. I am getting a little bit of blue smoke coming from the right exhaust at any RPM's, so it looks like this winter I am going to pull the engine out and freshen her up. She runs sooooo much better now, so smooth and I didn't even balance the carbs. yet. I almost think she was running on 3 cylinders before. Every carb. diaphragm had holes in them and someone tried to glue them up which made them hard to expand and contract like they are supposed to. I blew my buddy away on his katana 600, I took it up to 65mph and let off to let him catch up. She has soo much more potential than when I first got her home. And she must really like me too because there is a trail of antifreeze running down my driveway, marking her territory, originating from the thermostat cover/housing. I've already ordered new seals and a new cover (figuring the plastic has probably warped from all these years and I could see it has leaked before from the stain). Is there any substitute to the yamaha thermostat, being that a napa thermostat is only around $9 while the yamaha one is shy of $30. Overall I still really love the bike, its the longest trip I've been able to drive on a bike so that really makes me happy. -
Well, I went and picked her up yesterday. 1989 Venture Royale. I should have known better though, I went out with a partially dying battery (would not hold a good charge) and somewhat paid the price. I had the radio on (stupid move) and didn't realize it had stalled, while sitting at a long traffic light. Went to go and whoops, nothing. Had to push it through the intersection and a few hundred feet lol. Had people honking at me to tell me their displeasure, even though there was another lane for them to occupy. This was after a few hour trip so no complaints, got it started again and took it straight home. Flushed all of the brake systems today, now nice clean fluid and firm levers. The dealership I got it from must not have realized it was a linked rear master cylinder because the front line and proportioning line were not bled at all but the rear brake line was. They had adjusted the master cylinder stroke so the brakes would constantly drag so I had to lengthen the stroke of the master cylinder. So no parts required, and no more dragging rear brakes. Did a slow panic stop only using the rear master and it works as intended. I have a really choppy idle, above 2000 rpm's she takes off like a rocket and is very fast, under that she's really lopey. I have a set of 4 carburetor diaphragms coming in tomorrow and plan to replace the plugs so hopefully that will help some. I know I am going to have to sync. the carbs. but I need to get some gauges first. Oh and the steering bearings need to be tightened some or replaced, but works fine for the moment. Overall even not running 100% I am happy that I got her, and was able to ride comfortably longer than I ever have before. I am going to upload a video shortly as well.

On my tom tom, you can have it calculate by shortest distance mile wise or least amount of time. You have to go into the options and see how its set to calculate.

ic23b, My bike will be completely exposed to the elements, no overhang of any sorts. How do you think that cover would work to sunlight and rain?
-
Newguy, Ouch the price on that shelter stings a little. Looks like it would work very well though. Friesman1, I have a light duty open 5x12 trailer, considered buying an enclosed trailer before this one but I only had a light truck to pull it. I've since got a better SUV but money isn't what it used to be at the moment. My wife likes to investigate and chat it up with me when I'm working outside so she always knows exactly what I have, I like to keep it honest too.

Bongo, My fury has the special order 400 big block and automatic 727 trans. Only has a two barrel holly feeding all those cubes Best part about the car is its mostly all original numbers matching. I even have all four hub caps. She needs some rust work but hey what 35+ year old car doesn't?
-
Bongo, neighbors already hate me, no makeshift gazebos or tents lol. I'm in a suburban setting with about an acre. I already have a 1973 plymouth fury suburban station wagon in the driveway that I'm working on when I get the chance, which didn't go over well with the wife or neighbors, and it came from the neighbor right across the street. When I get the garage built I can hide everything in there. Not that my yard is a mess I just don't like stuff out of proportion. Those chinese $20 covers actually work?
-
Well, I purchased my first 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale, but the problem is I can't cram it into the shed with my other bikes lol. So, until my garage gets built (probably another year) I need a durable cover to withstand the elements (all year long). What covers do you guys have (I know most of you probably have garages or larger sheds).

I too have a tom tom one xl. I love it. I really haven't used the battery to tell for sure how long it would last. I've had it for about 3 years, don't leave home without it. I used to have it in my service van and its been "roughed" around a bit. No complaints.

Forgot to mention, while I was going through the top trunk and saddle cases I found the driver and passenger headset intercoms, upholstered to match driver backrest, bolt on passenger arm rests, maintenance manual, and some other goodies. Where is the maintenance day being held?

Well, I went back to the mom and pop placed and took another hard look at it. I drove about 500 if not more miles looking and sitting on bikes all over the place before going back. I've sat on different older gold wings and they all felt cramped and my shins would hit the engine guards when taking my feet off for lights and such. All of the cruiser style bikes are just too cramped and most my knees would hit the handlebars during turns and the seats are just too hard. It was about 32 degrees this morning and she fired right up without any hesitation (battery is a bit weak though). Smooth and quiet. Idle is a little low but otherwise I think she is going to make a fine bike! The rear brake is dragging ever so lightly so I will have to address that before any serious riding but most definitely taking it on a short cruise. I will be picking it up next saturday. I took a few pictures on my cell phone which make the bike look really well, make no mistake she needs a little rubbing compound and chrome polish. The air shocks held their air since last weekend when we aired them up so I was happy about that.

Thanks guys. As I said I've made a few older bikes reliable from the 70's. I am a electronic forklift technician so working on bikes doesn't bother me. I've been riding all sorts of toys with engines since I've been 3 (I'm 28 now). I prefer two strokes but the government has put a stop to that. I also have a 1987 Honda Helix 250cc scooter with 20,000 miles that rarely ever needs any maintenance, just add gas and change the oil when it tells me. It's sad but I am more comfortable and can ride longer on my 87 scooter than my 2005 Honda Shadow 1100. It's a shame motorcycle manufacturers have been designing newer bikes with "smaller is better" mentality. I don't necessarily want a bike from the 80's, but I feel as though I have no choice because of my size and physical conditions (I had severe carpal tunnel in both wrists had the surgery but only lessened the pain some, the bad discs in my back and neck, my weight etc.). If I could find a newer bike that I could fit on and could drive longer than an hour without having to jump off of the bike I would. The newer goldwings are so heavy and cumbersome I'm worried about holding it up with my bad wrists. So many issues to think about, which kind of leads me back to an early 80's wing that naked or just has the vetter fairing or something. I don't know, just kicking things around. I've even tried the new 650cc scooter but am super cramped on them, I fit better on my 250cc scooter, whats going on motorcycle manufacturers? I also tried a few sport touring bikes and if the handle bars were taller they could probably work.

BrileyR, Thanks for the links. The first purple one is the one I have been talking about, actually why I started this thread. I have contacted the second guy and that post is more of a hustle. I was going to go look at it until he told me it didn't run. Why thats not on his craigslist post I am not sure????? I am still thinking hard about the first one. It drives really nice just has some issues. He won't budge off of the $2500 price point.

Well, that venture was a bust. Air ride computer completely disconnected, even the wire harness is missing. Fuel pump is making an atrocious noise without the bike running. Supposedly the rear brake is still not fully releasing. Seems to be missing with the choke on. Looks like somebody spray painted the engine even the spark plug boots are sprayed silver. Its a shame, I really like the way the bike feels and fits me comfortably.
