  1. Has that farmer been proven right?? I'd love earlier 80s late 70s vehicles but i just imagine the gas mileage plus I'm pretty spoiled with fuel injection as well lol
  2. Don't be too proud of me puc. I unfortunately had to learn the hard way about saving and buying. I remember when I wanted a guitar when I was 15 years old my dad brought me into the bank and set up a 500 dollar loan. Then I wanted a mustang, then college loans and then a bike so pretty much from then up until a couple months from now I've been in debt, although some of it is college debt. I had made a series of financial mistakes that took me into the point of a bankruptcy but since then Ive seen things really turned things around financially. I think I get what you mean by no one gets to be a cowboy forever. Some days I feel like I'll live forever, but I know you're right. I put away some money every week for retirement, so I hope when the time comes I can pick and choose my battles when it comes to what to keep and work on and what to buy. I cant wait to buy that Tenere 700 if its what I hope its gonna be. I'm gonna have to do some test rides on a few different models, but I'll buy it with $$$$$$$. To be honest though. I think what I need is an:grandma:. You're lucky you have Tippy and now she can "grab the bars" and I hope I can find that in a lady some day!

  4. That looks great Saddlebum! So you're actually laying the fiberglass flush or even on top of the ABS after you've layered on some of the plastifix?
  5. Okay I see what yer saying. If i were to use the fiberglass epoxy then it has the possibility of not flexing the same as the ABS but if its melded directly into the ABS it'll flex with it just fine. By the way, Jeff I got that Stator and R&R in. Looks great! Thanks bud!
  6. Ive pretty much made the decision long ago to NEVER buy a new vehicle. I could make 100k a year and I would still drive late 90s pickups. I spent 1100 bucks on my silverado. Its got a 5.7 and 4x4. This truck has more power than I will ever need and it gets OK mileage for what it is. I couldn't even imagine what the equivalent of my truck would cost now-adays.
  7. See the plastifix stuff is what I'm talking about. The only issue is that I'm not spending 30 bucks on powdered ABS and acetone no thanks! I've had good luck just layering on ABS pipe glue, which I'm pretty sure is just a dissolver and abs plastic. As far as using heat and donor ABS to "solder" the plastic, I've done it, but with mixed results. I end up getting the plastic too hot and make it weak or even warp the other side of the plastic with the heat! I've heard of using fiberglass to help add rigidity and strength, but I've also read that the fiberglass wont flex while the ABS around it will flex which could cause more cracking? Either way, I'm doing a 63 hour work week this week so I'm not gonna get super far on the old girl. I appreciate the advice as its always interesting to see what everyone else is using. A question when using the fiberglass. I would probably have to sand down a large area of paint to the bare plastic to get the fiberglass to stick. Some of the cracks are visible on the bike, and I'd like to save myself from doing a full repaint if at all possible
  8. I work as a welder building Great Dane Trailers. Right now I weld together the rear frames, which are Stainless Steel. Its a pretty cushy job and they provide us with welding hoods with filtered compressed air. I honestly cant complain too much!
  9. Well I got the trunk off the bike to work on the CLASS system and found a few cracks to fix while i had everything off. Ive done the acetone dissolving method as mentioned above, but I have a difficult time finding the right consistency of plasti-puddy. I've also heard of people using the MEKP solvent, but I don't think Bomgaars has it on hand. Either way, I have a tendency to have a porous plastic weld that, while its pretty strong, could be stronger. Ive seen a plastic repair kit online that has a solvent and a powder, which I can only assume is powdered abs. What they do is get the plastic that is getting fixed damp with their solvent and drizzle a fine dust on it. It dries quickly and molds right into the plastic. Then after a bit of drying dampen it up with the solvent and add more powder. I really cant see how this isn't ABS plastic and MEKP or even Acetone. The kit is 30 dollars and it seems they go through the powder pretty quick so that would get super expensive when I can just grind my own. I read on a forum about a guy grinding ABS pellets down with a coffee grinder and I really think that sounds like a chief idea! For now I dissolved up some plastic and have started putting it all back together, but I'll be grinding a few of the deeper ones down to make sure that there isn't too much porosity.   10. Hey guys! Got a little more plastic welding to do, and I think the best way to go about this is to have a fine powder made of ABS to do the welding. I tried running small pieces of plastic through an old blender, but I dont see them gettign to be the powder I was hoping for. You guys have any suggestions to work this ABS down into a fine powder?

  13. After taking the solenoid block apart again and determining that it seals up very well and works properly I decided there must be a leak in the system BEFORE the solenoid block. I took warm soapy water and sprayed everything down and wouldn't ya know I found a leak on the compressor! Right where the intake and exhaust hose manifold goes onto the compressor block the air was escaping so I took it apart thinking there would be a gasket, but it turns out theres like a read valve and an o-ring. So I'm warming the truck up now to run over and get an O-Ring kit. For now i flipped the oring and pumped up the system this time and while its still leaking its much, much faster at airing up the shocks. Hopefully this licked the problem!
  14. I cleaned up the 3 solenoid block but I'm not entirely sure I'm seeing the other two solenoids you're talking about. I see a finter on the intake side of things but I'll look again in a bit

  18. Hey guys, I believe the solenoids in my CLASS system are working sluggishly. The front works just fine, and there are no leaks in the front or the rear, but when I inflate the rear it goes up really, really slowly, slow enough to cause an error code if i let it do it automatically, but sometimes i believe the solenoid opens up all the way and the air goes in just like its supposed to.. I thought I read a how-to on cleaning them a long time ago, but cant seem to find any info on it now. I've got the trunk off the bike so i figure while its off i'll dry the dessicant and clean the solenoids if possible. Have any of you guys done this?

  21. Good lord you got a sharp bike! I wish the motor and other metals on mine looked half that nice! IMO for 1700 bucks there's not a better bike on the market. I've put 30k on mine in 3 seasons, with only 1 break down (which i should have never left on the trip with the battery the way it was) so you should feel confident on the road!
  22. It seems to me like every time I go to the mechanic it ends up being 3 or 4 times more expensive than I was told, or what it should be. So I do pretty much all my work myself, unless I need a scanner. Then I'll run up town for that. As far as working on my bike goes, after I had B&B Cycles in norfolk put a back wheel on, and they managed to seperate the outer part of the rear brake rotor from the inner part (its a semi-floating rotor which means its riveted together) When i took the wheel off I could shake the rotor and it would freely move in 2 seperate pieces) and then telling me it wasn't like that when they put it back together, I'm absolutely done with having other people work on my stuff. I was leaving for California one week after I had them put the tire on and had to scramble to get a new rotor, which in turn wasn't the right one, but I used it anyways (Stupid)

  24. I emailed them and asked what the output of it is. He said they wind it to OE specs, but he doesn't know the specs, so I'll have to find out what the yamaha OE is to know. Not the best way to make a sale lol
  25. It was 41 and the roads were just thawed enough to get my 88 out. I dont think they're the prettiest on the market (but i think they're damn beautiful, especially my 2tone cherry) but really, I just absolutely love my Venture. I really dont think they make a much better bike, or at least maybe not one that isn't the price of a down payment on a house! I loved my 99 too, but my 88 really is absolutely my favorite bike I've ridden so far!
