Obviously that "WHY" sign on the road (post #961) was made by a dyslexic. It's supposed to say, "HWY". Thus we can now end this thread on WHY because we now know the answer: it's HWY. Done.
They aren't flexible. They just have to go where they match the contours of the tank. There's no difference in the tanks on the different years: 99-13. I don't think the tank on the RSTD is the same, however. So, be sure it's a Venture tank. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me.
Oh, forgot to answer your other question: just use some fishing line in a sawing motion to remove them. You will have to use some strong type of double sided tape to re-install them.
I read a lot of those reviews & most had no issues. Sounds to me as though the ones who did have an issue may not have adjusted it tightly enough. If I were you, I'd go for it, since you did say it's what you want.
I put a piece of Velcro on the black plastic ignition surround & then a matching piece on the heat controller. When the weather warms up, I just tuck it (heat controller) underneath the same black plastic thing until the next cold season.
Looks to me like there's clear liquid at the bottom of all the glasses except the first one. Watch carefully when the white liquid first hits the bottom of each successive glass.
I don't know how "some feel", but, I like them better than the other years, as well. I have a pin of it, as well as, a patch. I wear the pin on my jacket. Never have done anything with the patch, yet.
