  1. OH SHOOT! That's probably the one piece I didn't doublecheck was a little top hat piece thank you very much I will doublecheck that!!
  2. So, thank you all for all of your help. The first suggestion, was to grab my front brake and rock back and forth. And guess what I heard, my forks are bottoming out! So a mechanic friend of mine here in Denver, said it could be, Since we messed with them and since they're Original equipment, The fact that we messed with them is why they show their age. So my choice is, to get new progressive's, Or add some spacers. Unless I'm missing other options??????? But again, I definitely want to say thank you for all of your help I do appreciate it!!!!!
  3. At this moment, i am ready to try just about ANYTHING. Thanks. i appreciate it.
  4. First, Its GOOD to be back!!!! Now, I have a problem I HOPE i can get some help with!!! I changed the front fork seals on my 87 VR. I experienced NO PROBLEMS doing this. Got everything back together, and started riding again. THEN is when I noticed my problem. I followed the book on the oil amount, made sure that no air bubbles were in, progressive springs were in correctly. However, when ever i hit the smallest of bumps, I get a VERY LOUD THUNK. Even when I put air in the front shocks through CLASS, low, medium or high, i STILL get the THUNK. At first I thought it MIGHT be something with the fairing, however after taking it off a second time and replacing it, i am NOT seeing anything with the fairing. that doesn't mean its not, it just means I am not seeing it!! :-). Can ANYONE help? anyone have any ideas?? THANK YOU in advance for your help!!!!!
  5. Today was the 5th annual Emily Keyes Memorial Parade. In No one remembers, you can go to www.iloveuguys.org and read the story about "the ride". According to the police, there were OVER 5,000 bikes there today. After walking around, I found 5 other late 80's VR!!! I KNOW there were many more newer models and possibly more of the older models. It was Amazing. It was my Brother-in-laws FIRST ride with more than just 2 or 3 people. He loved it. We met a wonderful member of Venturerider.org, Bob, i think his name was. I had a small problem with my kickstand saftey switch and he tried to help. THANK YOU BOB!!!! I appreciate it!! I also send a THANK YOU for all the riders that were there today. It was a GREAT day for a ride!!! I could only imagine what 5,000 VR's would be like!!! Thanks for letting me ramble on!!!
  6. Thanks Gary. I appreciate the help. I will let ya know if it has enough. I am thinking it will but i just wanted a second opinion. Thanks Merlin:fingers-crossed-emo
  7. Finally got income coming in so I can come back to a home away from home for my 86 Venture Royale!!! YAY!! However, I have a question about swapping heads. Will a head from an 84 fit and work on an 86? Last fall, everything was running great. Then I had a small backfire while starting the bike and I lost HALF my power. After doing a Leakdown test and Compression test, it seems I need a valve job. HOWEVER, I have a good head that was given to me off an 84. All the measurements are within specs. I just need to know if they will swap or do i need to do the valve job on the 86 and put it back on the bike? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. I NEED to get back on the bike. I feel a part of me is missing. Thanks!!!! Merlin B Westminster, CO PS I forgot to say the 1984 is a 1200 CC and the 1986 is a 1300 CC. Thank MIGHT be important
  8. Sorry I haven't updated you lately. Since I cleaned the tank, filter, and carbs, my bike is running good. Still not the best, I know I can do better. However, I do have a curious question. Every once in a while, it will just lug and die. Kind of like it runs out of gas. but then after about 2 minutes, it starts right back up. ALSO, there are times that my lights dim really bad at low rpm but brighten right back up when I rev to about 1500 rpm. any ideas? Thanks Merlin

  10. Greg in London, I am planning to do my at dusk. When the sun is setting so I can clearly see the spark. However, I will let you know how it comes out. Merlin
  11. Thank You Rocket. I do appreciate it. I will let you know how it goes. Merlin
  12. Ok, got my colortune and test tuned a honda. Easy enough. But reading through the manual, I am having problems finding the Mixture Set Screw. Is it the "Pilot" screw? It is the little hole in the middle under the Diaphram housing on the carbs. Any Ideas? I tried to put in a pic but I amn't dat smarts. I did attach a pic. There is a little white arrow where I think it is. IS THIS IT????????????????? Thanks Merlin
  13. Thank you all for the suggestions. I feel I am getting really close. I will let you know what happens in the next few days!! Thanks again!!:witch_brew:
  14. Yes, we guys know that size DOES MATTER. But what size adapter for the "colortune" should I use for an 86 VR? I am NO good at looking at a bolt or nut and tellng what size it is. All I know is the plugs are small. Next, is it easy to use the colortune kit? Thanks. Merlin
  15. Ok sync'ing the carbs I understand. But what is color-tuning? The next question is, HOW??? Is there anyone in Denver, CO that knows how? Merlin
  16. Thanks Rocket, I would have LOVED to do all this last winter, however, I just got the bike. NOW, I got it back together, IT DOES RUN. However, I have the right side backfiring on me. Its only ONE cylander. So I get blub, blub, blub, POP! blub blub blub POP! Could this be I got the coil wires reversed? Hooked the back YELLOW coil wire to the front and front to back? Anyone Have any ideas? Other than that it runs good. IF I can get this fixed, It will be a completely different machine than what I bought. Thank you in advance. Merlin:think::think:
  17. Ok, got the gas tank cleaned out. There was about 2 tablespoons of rust floating around in there. The Petcock filters were torn so rust was getting into the fuel filter. The fuel filter was CAKED with rust. Changed BOTH petcock and fuel filter. Took out the TCI and dried it out. Tried the "Bake the TCI" fix. Then resoldered the 14 connections. Cleaned out the carb. Found rust flakes in there too. After I got everything back together, took a few cranks and she fired right up. Next, I am going to remove and clean my spark plugs again. Now, when she runs, I am still getting a few back fires. I am thinking it may be from all of the cleaners and solvents. Also, when I cleaned out the tank I used white gas. I am not going to worry just yet, I want to run a tank or two through it before I start worrying again. I want to thank EVERYONE, for the help they gave me. I deeply appreciate it. I am also learning more about my bike than I had thought. Thanks guys!!! Merlin in Westminster, CO:2133:
  18. I was just able to get the petcock out. First, is your hard to turn? Mine is. REALLY hard. I have to use pliers. ANYWAY, There are two filters on the petcock. A short one and a tall one. Do these come off and can I get replacements? My short one is torn off on BOTH sides of the little plastic strip holding the "filter" in place. I looked at the OLD filter and it is about 3/4 FULL of rust. As for the fuel put output, make durn sure you got that hose in something!!! mine shot about 5 feet away from the bike. I have no idea how many pounds of pressure that is, but IT WORKS! LOL I am thinking that with all the gunk in this this, that may be why I am only getting about 30 mpg. also it may be why not all of my cylinders are firirng properly. Now, are the carbs like an automoblie carb? do I need to go get a rebuild kit? Thanks guys. As for being a genius or (smart***) I think I still have a LONG way to go!!! But in a line from the movies "May the force be with you" all I can say is "MAY THE RIDE BE WITH YOU"
  19. As for the spark plug/ spark check, I check them with a "spark tester", a little light you put between your wire and plug that lights up when you crank. AFTER I ran the sea foam I replaced the old plugs with new. As for the GUNK thing, condor, I have drained my tank and found that I have about a teaspoon of RUST in the bottom of my tank. (I changed the fuel filter today as well, nothing run through it yet.) BEFORE I drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter, I had the bike Idling to see if the "kill switch" clean cured my problem. A. It didn't. It runs but with the petcock at the regular "run" position, it still dies out. B. The rust. Question, WITHOUT disassembeling the entire back half of the bike, is there a way to remove the tank easily? C. Now that I know there is rust in the tank, YES Condor, I believe my carbs are messed up too. Question, is there an easy way to remove them without having to, again, disassemble the entire front end? Everything else that has been suggested has checked out and or been cleaned or changed. I am thinking this is my root problem. PS. Curiosity question - at low RPM my tach will not register. Once I get to about 1800 or 2000 it starts registering. Any suggestions? Again, Thank you for letting me pick your brains. I DO deeply appreciate it. I cannot wait to be riding all summer. That is my plan. Come rain or shine. Bikes rule!!
  20. Thank you Very much Rocket. I knew there had to be an easier way!!! You Guys ROCK!!! Thanks. Hopefully, with all the suggestions, I may be up and running in the next few days!!!!! Ohedron42 Merlin
  21. OK! I have several places to start!! thank you very much. I am printing them ALL out and going to check them out one by one. I am going to start at the top and work my way down. I do Have one last question. IS there an easy way to get the fuel filter off? It looks like one has to remove the rear wheel to get to the screw. There's got to be a better way than I am seeing. Thanks, ALL Ohedron42 Merlin
  22. :sick:Ok, Last wednesday, I was riding to work. Got stranded 5 miles from work. I ride an 86 VR. So far I have had help in quite a bit of electrical. I have, added the Odyssey Dry cell battery, Cleaned all contacts, Run Sea Foam and changed spark plugs, clipped a quarter inch off the spark plug wires. Everything tells me it should be running. Full tank of premium, at prices that hurt!, I was riding down the road about 35 mph, in 4th gear. The bike started acting like it was losing power. The just stopped like I had turned the key. When I try to restart, it will run pitifully only with the choke on, when I try to give it throttle, it dies. I have checked spark on all coils, they are hitting strong. HELP, any ideas? I really do NOT want to take it to a service shop. I don't have that kind of money. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all for the help in the past. Ohedron42 Merlin Westminster, CO
  23. Thanks to everyone for your help. In the end, I had to go to a Yamaha shop and get a 3.99 tool. but it was too short and the heads were in the way. So I went to checker and got a T-handle spark plug wrench and welded the suckers together!! Worked like a charm. Changed them thar plugs in less then 15 mins!!! Again, Thanks for all the help. Ohedron42 merlin:)
  24. Thanks Guys!! I feel like a stoopid monkey. Unfortunately I do NOT have the tool kit. I wish I did. But I will be making one, the ones on ebay are just to expensive. So, Thin walled, 3/8 drive with a swivel and one inch extention. Thank you all gentlemen. I deeply appreciate it. Ohedron42
  25. :confused24::confused24:I have to change my plugs. Sea Foam has done its work. However, NONE of the plug sockets or regular metric sockets will fit. Is there a special socket one must get? Does it have to be "thin wall"? What am I doing wrong? Thank you all in advance for helping with my "stupidity"!!! Or silliness, you choose! Thanks Ohedron42
