Bleeding the brakes ....
nowindinmyhair replied to nowindinmyhair's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think my problem may be elsewhere. I just can't seem to get pressure on the rear pads unless I pump the back pedal repeatedly a dozen times. Even then, I can rotate the wheel by hand. I am thinking of taking the master cylinder apart. Can this be cleaned and reassembled ? Is there any merit to that exercise ? -
time to reassemble

Thanks Carl. That's almost what I did. When I get out tomorrow, I'll loosen the pinch bolt and see if anything repositions itself. Ben -

Thanks. By the time I read your post, I made the same mistake and came to the same conclusion. But it makes me feel better to know that it's not only my conclusion. -
Though I've had my class M since I was about 16 year old, I have not had a street bike for more than 20 years. Ridersplus was 1/2 the price of the most expensive and my rate should drop again by almost $400 next year. I got my quote online and followed up with a telephone call and purchase with temp slips coming through email. I did all of this in January this year. Don't know what they will be like if I make a claim. Hope I never have to find out. But the price and service sure have me convinced for now.

time to reassemble

OK. First of all, thanks to everyone providing input my scraping noise and brake issues. With the suggestions received and the manual, I think I may have found more than one problem. Brakes: I think the pistons were sticking and there may have been some air or crud in the lines. I took the calipers off, took the pistons out and cleaned them all up. Hopefully, I will notice a difference when I put them back together and bleed properly. BTW, I'm glad I checked all that because I now think I had little or no back brakes. (Not something I would have noticed gradually because it was obviously like that when I got the bike.) Driveshaft: This baby needed to be cleaned and greased bad. That's all done. Now I am reassembling and I can't figure out where to put the spacer re: the brake torque stopper plate. The spacer fell out during reassembly. This would have been easier if there were two but I only have one. It's about 1/8 " thick. Does it go between the brake stopper plate and the frame or between the plate and the wheel ? Once again, thanks in advance. Ben -
Ok, weekend's here. I started looking at my scraping noise (on my '84 Venture). Didn't think it was the brakes but when I put the bike on the double stand, the rear wheel was not turning freely. Could not remove the rear pads so I took the caliper off. Now the pads fell out and I have to say that they look almost new (thickness wise). There was a small metal plate covering about 1/2 the piston on the piston side of each pad. The small plate hooks on to the pad. It has an arrow on it. Can I take the plate off ? If not, which direction does the arrow point (front or back)? Is there an adjustment somewhere to take the pressure off because the pads are always in contact with the rotor and prevent the wheel from turning freely. Thanks in advance.

Didn't I read somewhere that synthetic was a bad idea for these old puppies ?

1st Gen Audio Wiring

My '84 did not have the stock radio. When I bought the bike, there was an old Kenwood cassette deck mounted vertically. It was exposed to rain and the finish was not nice. I removed the Kenwood and put in a new CD player I got on sale at Canadian Tire (Regular $149.99 for $59.99). I installed a marine splash guard with a cover that slides down into the fairing when it is open. The stereo is now protected. The best part is that the new CD player has a USB port and an SD card slot. I loaded up my tunes on 2 2GB cards and now have hours of play time available at my fingertips. Just another thought/option. -
scraping noise

Thanks guys. i'll give those a try. Guess i got me a weekend project! -
The weather finally warmed up enough to take my "new-to-me" '84 Venture for a spin. Everything seems fine except for an occasional scraping noise when the bike is rolling slow (coming to a stop or moving around in my garage). Not sure if it disappears with a little more speed or if I just can't hear it. Don't think it's the brakes. Anyone come accross this ? (I sure don't want to have a wheel lock up on me at 100 kph or something like that.)

OK folks. Thanks to all who made excellent suggestions re:insurance. I shopped around quite a bit (OK you caught me, I didn't shop until March !) and I found quite a difference in pricing. I got my class M when I was 16 or 17 years old and always said I would get back into a big street bike. But unfortunately, I did not have motorcycle insurance in the last 5 years (actually, it was more like 20). None of the companies/brokers I called would accept my ATV as a motorcycle. My driving record is spotless .... no tickets etc.. ever ! The cheapest, by far, was Riders Plus. The most expensive came in at a whopping $1800/year, PLPD only. Riders Plus came in at about 1/2 of that and that includes comprehensive coverage. And in a year, they will recognize my 20+ years clean record and the rate will reduce by about another half. Hope this helps anyone looking for insurance in Ontario. Riders Plus are on the web.

Still a lot of snow out here but getting really anxious for spring. I bought an '84 Venture and it didn't have a tool kit. I am putting some tools together (pliers, spark plug wrench, multi tool, etc...) I wonder if anyone has experience with "on the road" issues and could point to any particular tool or item I should keep in my tool kit.

Will be shopping for insurance in Ontario in the next few weeks. Anyone know of any dedicated (or otherwise) insurance companies with good rates ?

What is your Christmas present to yourself?

My 1984 Yamaha Venture. I have been thinking of getting a big street bike for a long time. Finally convinced the wife that now was OK. Kids aren't moved away yet but this is a test. I got the bike for a good deal so if, after 3 or 4 years, it turns out that I am not using it much (mid-life crisis ?) I can resell and I won't lose much. If it turns out that we enjoy travelling with the bike, then we can sell and upgrade. Now I only have to wait the 4 - 5 long painful months till spring.
