  1. John, As long as you hear a few clicks when you turn it on....you are ok. It's when you don't hear anything that you might be in trouble and when it goes bad, you will think you just ran out of gas because it will come to a choking stop. After 8 Ventures since 83 with over 500k, I finally lost my first fuel pump. And this was on an 07 with 40K on it. I'm just glad I went ahead and bought an extended warrenty with it. Rick
  2. Hey folks, This appears to be a good segway to something that's been on my mind for a while? A while back I had a brief conversation with Deepforkriver who made up a few sets for himself and he was wanting to sell the remaining sets. Since I developed these links I was telling him how they came about and why Diamond R was selling them. James told me that Allen was selling them for $90 which he thought was too much. He also told me that if I would make them he would be more than happy to buy them from me....which I found very interesting. But it made me think that even though I gave my design and specs to Allen to manufacture, there is no patent involved so anyone is free to build them. It also took me back to when I was discussing a retail price with Allen where I felt that $50 or $60 was probably a good price. But he chose to have his made from stainless (which was not necessary) which is probably the reason for his price. Before I got Allen talked into making these links, I had 30 sets made up by a machinist friend of mine on a cnc machine just to get them in the hands of you guys so we could get some feedback. And we chose to use mild steel (like oem) and have them zinc plated and I sold them for my cost plus shipping which was around $35. So, here is the question. If I started making these for just VentureRider members and sold them for $55 or $60 a set (which would include Priority Mail shipping) would there be an interest from you guys. I would still have them cnc produced with chamfered edges and zinc plated. This would also might give Allen a little competition and maybe he might rethink his manufacturing process and retail price. But like I said, I would only sell these to you guys. So, what do you all think, Rick
  3. Rich, You can do this with the rear wheel removed, but you can also install them with the wheel on. You just need to raise the bike enough to take the pressure off the link bolts to where they will just slide out. I've attached the Diamond R instuctions which suggest that you do it when you remove the rear wheel which will give you plenty of room to work and allow you to easily move the swing arm to remove the pressure off the link bolts. Hope this helps, Rick
  4. Dozer, No on the grease on the axle. But the best way to check your bearings is to get the front end supported with the front tire off the ground, remove the calipers and get them out of the way of the tire........and then spin the wheel and listen. If you hear nothing but the quiet sound of the wheel spining the bearings are ok. But if you can hear them grinding and making any unusual noise.....replace them. Hope this helps, Rick
  5. Jerry, I can certainly help you out as much as possible with my seat modification. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3738&title=butt-butler-seat-mod&cat=25 But as far as going back any further, you are constrained by the back of the seat pan, which rests against the frame that the fender attaches to. The only way you can get back any further is to go up....which is what Russell Day Long will do with their seat (where they use your OEM seat pan to work from). Your 06 should have pillow top seats, which is one of my favorite Venture seats to rework and really comes out nice. Then as far as your long legs go, a set of Kurykyn ISO pegs on the crash bars will certainly make a big difference. Call me and we can talk. Let me know if I can help you, Rick
  6. Larry, You are good to go. 2 - 1/2" holes should not be an issue as I ran 4 - 1/2" holes in my lid without any problems with stock carbs. But if you get a stumble coming off idle, put a piece of duct tape over one or both. And with that inner dam removed, it just allows all air coming through the filter to go straight into the carb throats, rather than making it go up and over creating a disturbance. But unless the lid or box is warped the lid should fit down into the groves even with the K&N. Hope this helps, Rick
  7. Great bike, But, go ahead and spring for a set of Corbin seats, because the stock seat sucks pretty bad....especially for the passenger. Rick
  8. Here's an interesting option for you, and it's designed to fit in a saddlebag: http://www.jpcycles.com/product/721-352 Hope this helps, Rick
  9. Hey guys, I just replaced a set of fork springs on a RS Venture with constant rate Sonic springs, and discovered it already had a set of Progressives in it. So, rather than throwing them in the trash like I would do with the stock springs....I thought maybe one of you folks could use them for the cost of shipping them to you. Progressives are not my current choice to replace fork springs, but they are certainly much better than stock. So drop me a PM or e-mail with your address and I'll get them out to you and we can settle up on the shipping cost later. Rick
  10. Steve, The One looks pretty good and appears to be built heavy enough...and priced right. But for trailer that pulls, loads and stores easily, my choice is a Kendon Standup or one of it's knockoffs. I got a single rail for my track bike but I discovered that it would also haul my RSV. But it's kind of a handfull and a bit awkward to load without 2 people. The best choice for a Kendon, is the dual rail and then remove the dual rails and put one right in the middle....which gives you plenty of room on each side of the bike to load and unload it. And like the name says, when you are finished with it, it just flips up on the end where you can push it up against your garage wall to store it. And you can always find used ones on Craigs list priced right. Just search on Kendon Dual Rail. And there are plenty of videos out there if you Google the same thing. Hope this helps, Rick
  11. Terry, If you really want a white Venture, your only oem option is an 04. Or..you could buy a new left over and repaint it. The nice think about fresh paint, especially on ABS is all you have to do is scuff it up a little with a Scotchbrite pad and shoot it (just base coat and clear...no primer). Just about any good painter will shoot it, if you take all the pieces off and deliver them to him. But you need to remove all of the stick on stuff like the eyebrows and emblems. Now I would paint over the factory strips and then have a pen stripper follow the same lines with fresh striping. And there is nothing prettier than a pearl white bike...and this is coming from someone that only likes black on his bikes. Good luck, Rick
  12. Brian, I can rework and lower your seat enough to get you closer to the ground. And when you get it back, you won't be able to tell anything was ever done to it. Take a look at my ad in the Classifieds and let me know if I can help you: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3738&title=butt-butler-seat-mod&cat=25 And you cannot lower the rear or front of any 1st gen without alot of reconstruction to your suspension. And don't worry about air in the forks, that is just there to change preload for heavier riders....which appears is not your issue. Rick
  13. Mike, I have one (or two) you can have for the cost of postage, which is about $5.25 for a small Priority Mail box. Just send me your address and I'll get you one out tomorrow, Rick
  14. Here you go Wayne, The pillowtop seats are my favorite seat to rework: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=3738&title=butt-butler-seat-mod&cat=25 Rick
