  1. This is our light weight tourer. http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/IMG_1281_zpsb5e00ae6.jpg
  2. We did it both ways last summer you will be there and it doesn't take that long, totally different views from different directions (I know, Captain Obvious). Very nice area.
  3. If you remove the lowers there are electrical items buried in them and the cruise control actuator.
  4. The manual states to use gasket adhesive all the way around the cover side and high temp silicone on the 1/2 moons. Just did mine and you are correct what a PITA, but can you imagine what the dealer would charge for this work. I too had to tear partially back down to re adjust the upper hose clamp on the hose between cyls. 2 and 4. Hope we both got it this time.
  5. Rode up to the Huron river (Lake Erie) and went for a nice boat ride to Cedar Point and up the river With Don and Eileen. My bike died in his driveway so be warned you MD people there is some kind of Bermuda triangle thing going on there. A quick trip to Wally Word for a new battery (Thanks Don) and off we went. Here are a couple pics for you non believers, should have took some of the bikes but neither was a Yamaha. http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/IMG_2325_zpsnnmmllyk.jpg http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/IMG_2326_zpsxpj83wuq.jpg http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/IMG_2329_zpsxkxxi8vn.jpg
  6. I would like to give a shout out and a bid Thanks to Dave Liddy at Breyley Yamaha 11035 State Rd. Parma, OH 44133 440 237-4543 Dave helped me out with my valve shim job by supplying me with a loaner tool and a bunch of used shims (separate thread). He has nice Yamaha only dealership and is very knowledgeable on them. I talked to him about bringing a trailer with parts and accessories to Maintenance Day, He did express some interest but it was too short notice this time but may be doable next time. They do customer appreciation events throughout the year at various venues. Dave said they have a pretty good stock of parts or he can have them with some advance notice then we can pick them up if needed. They are not the closest to Don's but the other dealer near by NEVER has any parts on hand. I will try to get some business cards for MD, for you guys. Regards, Paul
  7. The results were 6 valves out of spec and 5 more flirting with the lower limits. tell ya what it's a bit of work to get them all set right. More importantly when looking for shims and a tool the general manager at Breyley Yamaha Inc. 11035 State Rd. Parma, OH 44133 (440 237-4543) Rented me the valve tool and gave me a bunch of used shims with the understanding the same amount of used shims make their way back to him along with the tool. This act of kindness from Dave Liddy will cause me to look them up when I need parts for the bike. Dave has been wrenching on them for 39 years and is very knowledgeable and has a nice old school dealership, not one of those multi brand palaces with too many bikes one can not get intimate with a certain bran they sell just Yamaha.
  8. Those tribal accents look real nice on the black paint, are they on the fairing too? (picture)
  9. I had the same issue, it was resolved by loosening the banjo bolt on the master cylinder and pumping it a few times, so use the banjo bolt than bleed the calipers. Remember to keep a rag around the banjo bolt too keep brake fluid off the paint.
  10. Hey Skydoc, I echo your sediments about good folks, Don and Eileen they are wonderful. I met him for the reason of squeezing knowledge from between his ears, as it turned out he lives quite close to us so we set out to meet them at their home then ended up riding to a local craft/antique show then dinner that night. (I do have a photo of him pushing an antique stroller but I am holding on to that for blackmail purposes.) We have since struck up a nice friendship that I value. One day Don gave me a bunch of spare parts for the RSV so I proceeded to wright up a nice thank you on this site to expose his kindness (something you all already knew) then the site mysteriously crashes so the post never goes live, I think he pulled the plug cause he is so humble. We will be at MD unless my medical issues get in the way. Hope to meet everyone.
  11. As noted previously it is a extended 6mm allen socket you will need. Those are NOT drain holes in the bottom of the forks, they hold the internal damper rod in place I can see them being used as drain plugs though and things should not fall out of place as long as you leave a few threads in the damper rod then remove the spring caps and push up on the bolts to let ALL the oil drain out. Consult the exploded view in your manual to see what I am talking about. I had to replace one of those bolts because it almost rounded out on me, ended up using an impact driver to remove it. My bike has 37K mi on it and the oil was very dirty as well as all the internal parts. This was done because I wanted to replace the fork seals as a preventive measure due to age. I also used a 500 ml graduated cylinder to add 553 ml of oil to each leg. I recommend taking the forks apart to do a full internal inspection but that's just me. If your happy with the dive in the front end use the same weight if you want to quell it a bit as I do step it up, your call in the end. Regards, Paul
  12. Prayers sent to your friend, how tragic.
  13. I have read that people raise the forks 1" so 7/8'should be ok, right??? I have a cheap ebay grill on there but will take note when I install the fender. Thank you. PS. Sorry for the huge pictures.
  14. I added some pics. Someone please respond as I am waiting for an answer so I can get this thing together. http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/20150515_171125_zpstoycu2pk.jpg http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q654/Pauljewl/20150515_171211_zps6ldsme0d.jpg
  15. Hello Good Folks, I just slid my fork tubes up 7/8" (this measurement was taken from the line between the fork tube cap and tube on top and the recess in the top clamp.) Now I have a measurement of 4 1/2 inches between the stainless tube cover and the lower leg fender mounting ear. The book says front fork travel is 5 1/2". I know this has been done before but I am just concerned about bottoming out. I a running original stock springs and changed the oil to 10 weight, we do ride two up and loaded. I don't want to rely on air preload. What are your experiences?
  16. So, Is the military vehicle collector guy gonna bring Olivia up to show off on MD or is there a plan to ride there (Vermillion) and get a tour?
  17. Heal Well Sir, Prayers sent.
  18. Prayers going out to you and your family Skid. To have people like Dan in your corner is a blessing in itself. I have not met you Dan but you come across as a solid dude that anyone would be proud to call you friend!
  19. I have found a lot of the information I was looking for, fortunately I live in a region with couple of the finest hospitals around I am being seen at University Hospital Case Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic is just down the street. The Clinic has a surgeon that doe this work so I will attempt to contact her office in the morning. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes I will gladly embrace them as there is power in positivity and prayer! As a side note, if you are on the fence about a colonoscopy or just not feeling right for a while in that region please get checked out it was not that bad but I was put under for the procedure, it may just save your life. I am 50 but wish I have done it sooner but there were no symptoms till a few months prior to getting one. You guys and gals are a great bunch! I look forward to riding with you in the future. Best Regards, Paul
  20. Hello to all VR family members, To our dismay I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer just before Christmas. I have since completed 5 and a half weeks of chemo and radiation treatments, I have tolerated both very well. Now the doctor is suggesting re-sectioning my rectum into my anal muscle and possibly a colostomy, which I would like to greatly avoid. I am seeking information on a medical device that is internally implanted that closes off the rectum when pumped. There are two products I was able to search out by the trade name of “Soft anal band” and another called “Neosphincter”. The problem is my surgeon or hospital does not perform this procedure and I can’t find anyone that does. I may not be googling this correctly cause all I can find is study data and sales info on these devices. If someone out there in VR land has a relative or a friend or otherwise has any info on a doctor or hospital or a way I can find who does this procedure please PM me as I want to be armed with as much information as possible before my next doctor visit. I am located in the Cleveland Ohio area if this helps. I want thank you all in advance for any help. It was a bit difficult to write this as I am usually a private person in such matters but I truly need some help and don’t want this turned into a sympathy thread. Regards, Paul
  21. I would like to rent/ borrow a valve shim tool that works on a 1999 venture. Or buy a cheap one if you no longer have a use for it. I will gladly pay shipping both ways if it is reasonable or I can bring it back to you if you will be at Don's maintenance Day if you will be there. Hope this post is in the right spot. Regards, Paul
  22. Had a close call myself a few years back it involved a honey dipper truck, I did hit the ditch rode it back out to the street unscathed but shaken. Glad you stopped in time Goat.
  23. One would think there needs to be a pressure switch too cause you can have full oil an still loose pressure from a faulty pump. So does anyone think triggering the HID light relay from the oil pressure signal is a good idea, in theory the engine should be running when the light turns on.
