  1. If I'm selling something big and expensive like a car, I won't discuss price until they show enough interest to come look at it. When they call and want to talk price I say, "Come take a look at it and decide if you want it first. If you like it, we can haggle over the price. If you don't like it, it's a waste to talk price."
  2. I arrived at the motel in Spearfish mid Sunday afternoon driving up from Denver, CO after dropping off my wife at the airport. My son who happened to be driving from LA to NYC detoured through and we enjoyed the area until this morning. We went to Deadwood Sunday and spent several hours in Sturgis yesterday and late in the day went to Mt. Rushmore. I've never seen so many bikes. A few had big block Chevy V8s with up to 1100 claimed hp. If you saw an old guy wearing shorts and a cowboy hat (I had vacationed in Wyoming for a week and just had to buy a Cowboy Hat!) walking around with a tall longhaired young man, that might have been me. When I first got to Sturgis, I mistakenly drove through the middle in my F150. I didn't think I was going to make it through with the bikes parked so close to the street. I looked and looked for Ventures but only spied one blue 2007 and the rider wasn't a member. I also saw a Yamaha scooter and a road star. This was my first time to Sturgis and I didn't have my bike with me. I did enjoy looking at the young ladies who were showing their stuff!! If yah got it, flaunt it is my philosophy! My Garmin directed me through the hills coming in and I passed a motorcycle wreck. My son said the motel desk clerk told him when he checked in Saturday that already three bikers had died in accidents at that time.
  3. With any bike or auto that old, condition is everything. If it hasn't been ridden in a while and is missing, you could find yourself doing a lot of work to get it right. Things like fork seals, fork springs, clutch slave cylinder, carb cleaning, elec wire cleanup are some of the things you might find yourself working on. It's worth paying a little extra for a bike that has been kept in good running condition.
  4. Well then, a first gen it is!!! Inexpensive to buy! Lots of friends to help you sort it out! Or a wing! The low center of gravity is a great thing for a 900lb bike!
  5. I may be there for a day or so in my truck. My wife is taking off a week from work next week. I'm driving to Denver and picking her up from the airport Saturday with the plan to tour Wyoming and areas. After dropping her off the next weekend, I may go over to Sturgis just to say I've been, regretfully without a bike though. I wanted to drive out so I could do a little more touring before coming back home.
  6. Wow! What a disaster! So glad you two are recovering well! A big buck deer ran into the side of my car after I entered the 35 speed zone of Peru, Nebraska after dark. That is when I decided that deer were so stupid that they had to have been put on earth for food and we should be eating more deer!
  7. Oh well, you got to enjoy it for a while and got a few bucks back out of it I presume. Life is all about change. Congratulations of finding a buyer! One thing is for sure, there will always be plenty of bikes out there to purchase if you feel the urge!
  8. You should got to Myrtle Beach on Memorial Day weekend. Lots of sport bike riders there with their overweight girl friends on the back thong bikini and all. So, hundreds of sport bikes everywhere with big bare butts sticking up in the air. It's quite a sight.
  9. Some brands of gas are "Top Tier" 87 and 91 or 93 octane which means it meets certain standards and has a cleaner in it. Here is a link that shows what brands are "Top Tier". http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers/ Living in a coastal city, I'm lucky that alcohol free gasoline is available and that is what I use in the bikes and yard tools. I know from experience it makes a huge difference in the yard tools when they are not used for a long time.
  10. There is the shotgun method. I'm sure Yammer Dan knows what he is talking about but Berryman's scares me because it has acetone in it according to the label. Acetone will dissolve almost anything. So, if there is any chance of it getting to something other than metal, it might dissolve it.
  11. I bought a disc off ebay that contains the shop manuals for the first gens, 1200s and 1300s, the second gens, road stars, royal stars, about 30 different manuals altogether and it only cost $12. I don't see one on ebay now but there is a hard copy manual for cheap.
  12. You can access a manual in the first gen tech section.
  13. Better to prepare for retirement and die early than not prepare and live in poverty in old age. My Dad having lived through the depression was too thrifty. He never made much money but he always saved. Our family life could have been more enjoyable if he hadn't been so obsessed with saving money. He passed at age 79. My Mother at 93. Then my sisters got mad at each other because one thought the other got too much of the money left, the one who took care of our Mother and her bank account. I declined to take any because I had not been around to help take care of my Mother. Seems a squabble between siblings is unavoidable when the estate is divided. I suppose that's a good reason to spend it all before you go!!!
  14. If you google this you will find that lots of people have had the same problem.
  15. Being responsible and enjoying life is always a balance of responsibilities and desires. Everybody has their own demarcation between the two. We work to get paid not because it's fun to work but because we need the money to be responsible. The more dependents we have the more responsible we should be. There is an old saying that goes something like, "Everything you bring into your home owns a part of you and if you are not careful, there won't be anything left of you for you". We should remind ourselves of this occasionally and make sure we have some of ourselves left.
  16. I wonder if something got hacked?
  17. I've seen boroscopes in Sams Club recently. I'm sure you can buy them anywhere and with one of those tools to pick it up you can retrieve the offending tube.
  18. I agree with your last statement Dan! They said all of your files will be exactly where you left them when you upgrade to win 10. Lie! Lie! Mine were nowhere to be found and the instructions on how to find them could not be followed. I don't need all of the features of 10 anyway.
  19. Thanks for the good words! Stuart wasn't the best student in high school. In fact he dropped out and was a rebellious but decent kid. He started working as a busboy at a restaurant and then became a cook. Several years passed working as a cook and pizza delivery driver. Then he bought two turntables and taught himself to scratch records and he also bought a device that recorded different tracks. He had found his passion. He was 22 when he approached me about supporting him while he went to Full Sail school in Orlando. They had a 12 month program teaching kids how to record music among other things. The T&F were $25k for the 12 months. Since he had not been a good student, I wasn't sure he would apply himself but I agreed to support him, about $50k by the time he started getting paid. His grades tied for second in his class. After graduating he went to work as an un-paid intern at the Quad studio in Manhattan. But he worked very hard and started getting paid as an assistant engineer in about 3 months. He was fortunate in many ways. His high school buddy had moved back to NYC and had a room available in his apt. He learned how to record digitally at school and the industry was switching from tape to digital. He was able to show the older engineers how to use the new system. It's a very tough business. If you don't give it your all, you won't survive. He says he is the only kid in his class who is still working as a recording engineer. The hours are horrible. He typically works from afternoon until well into the night or all night through the weekends and holidays many times. He spent much of his off time reading everything he could find about recording techniques and equipment. He rents the little room in Manhattan he converted into a studio and it was necessary to hone his skills. Plus it often times enables him to work in his studio instead of renting a place in a commercial studio for megabucks. Saves the client some money and helps pay for his equipment. Probably $70k in equipment and software, $30k in software alone. Since he became Beyonces's engineer, he has spent a couple months in Paris, months in FL, and many months in LA where she spends the winter. He has been invited to the Grammys twice for his work but no winners yet. The first time was for the number 1 song, "We Are Young" by FUN. The second time was for work with Beyonce.
  20. If you want to buy a reprinted manual, try YamahaPubs.com
  21. You've got 30 days to go back. If you are under 30 days, just do a search for instructions.
  22. My son Stuart White is a music recording engineer who has recorded Beyonces's last two albums. The attached video is his skype interview with the Pensado's Place show. I know nothing of the show or the business but it may interest someone who does. His interview starts at about 17 minutes of the show.
  23. My son uses a Mac laptop. He is rough on it, carrying it in his backpack wherever he goes and uses it a lot for his business which is recording music. Anyhow, he keeps the warranty on it because it needs repair often. Macs are the only ones used in his business. Harley doesn't fit the description "last longer" ???? Air cooling doesn't give it a chance to last as long as a water cooled engine.
  24. I made the mistake of downloading Windows 10 night before last when I went to bed. When I signed in the next day all my files were gone. I finally found instructions about how to find them but the instructions were inaccurate. So, I went back to Win 7. I was so relieved to see all of my files returned to me!!! I may have to buy a Mac next time!
  25. I know Arthr itis too well for me to do anything like that.
