  1. Plastigage can be used to check bearing clearances. I suppose it is still available.
  2. If you park a 1st gen against the wheel stop, can you rebuild the forks by just removing the bottom portion of the forks leaving the upper in place on the bike? Or in other words will the lower legs of the forks clear the end of the table?
  3. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?119309-Iowa-Venture-riders
  4. The first time I replaced the fork seals in my 85 Kawasaki ZN700 I used Kawasaki OE seals and Belray 10W fork oil. The dealer sold me the 10W, probably because that is what they had. The seals didn't last very long. The second time I replaced the fork seals I used All Balls Racing seals and SAE 5W30 motor oil, the Walmart brand. Seems to work just fine. The manual specified SAE 20W. The second set of seals are holding up much better. I just ordered All Ball Racing seals for my Venture. I may use the SAE 5W30 or maybe 5W20 when I replace the seals in my Venture. I suspect fork oil is just overpriced motor oil. Then again, I'm just learning.
  5. Seems to me that if you install the Progressive fork springs that are much stiffer, the dampening has to be stiffer in its action to match the stiffer springs. Just seems to me. I would think thicker oil would be needed to achieve this.

  7. Wow! You did have a problem with your 5th!
  8. If the bike sits for a good while, does the ride on collect on the bottom of the tire and cause a vibration for a while during it's redistribution?
  9. Wow! You can't have fun like that every day! Perseverance! Perseverance!
  10. We are finished with the Mustang!!!! My son's good friend who dabbles in cars got his favorite mechanic/shop to install the last item and align it on a Saturday afternoon/night. So, I hope it's over for me. After this weekend of company, maybe I can get to my motorcycle. Time to order fork seals and progressive springs. I'll still have about a week by myself before my Sweetie gets back from her trip to her homeland.
  11. Looks like Michelin is okay with putting a tube in some of their tubeless tires. So, the tire in question is probably okay since it states on the sidewall tube or tubeless.
  12. For similar reasons. I now put a plastic tarp under the vehicle to keep any spillage off the concrete driveway. The husband of a lady who used to work for me drained their daughter's car's manual tranny and filled the engine. She took off for Florida with an empty tranny and a double filled engine. Didn't make it very far before it had to be towed to the dealer (new little Korean car). The dealer called him up and asked that he come out to the dealership, they had something to show him. Engine survived but another tranny from the salvage yard was installed. I told her she should confiscate her husband's tool box!!
  13. It appears that it can be used with a tube on a tube type rim but will also work as a tubeless on a tubeless rim. I don't think it is anything to fret over.
  14. My 89 only has about 6,500 miles on it so I would not expect those bushings will need replacement. We are still working on the dang Mustang. I'm 72 so I'm letting my son do most of the work. When I get the chance I will measure the caliper pistons of the stock calipers and the R1 and decide if I will change the right front. The pads appear to be the same size except my stock pads are as thick as new pads. I may have a rf R1 for sale soon.
  15. Renting your previously owned house certainly is one of life's strange coincidences. May tend to cause you to second guess your decision to live in a 5th wheel.
  16. The R1 caliper I bought off ebay came today. I briefly compared it to the stock caliper. The pads are not any larger. Maybe there is an advantage to swapping but it's not obvious by looking at the two. We are still working on the Mustang. Might finish tomorrow. I was incorrect about the year of it. It's a 2016 GT with the performance package and it only has 3k miles on it. We are changing lots of suspension parts to lower it, maker it corner flatter, and eliminate wheel hop. I thought it was perfect before we started. My son recently finished recording Beyonce's latest album, her HBO special, and I suppose he has the money to waste.
  17. I've never done it but there is a test that can be performed on the coolant to verify if a head gasket is leaking checking for hydrocarbons i think. But, it does sound like a head gasket leak. Decision time! repair? replace engine? sell the bike as a parts bike? use it for a parts bike?
  18. It has a horrendous amount of spyware like google. They will know every site you go to. I doubt they start charging you because they will be making so much money giving out your info from spying on you.
  19. I know a guy who spilled something on his keyboard and he plugged in a tabletop computer keyboard and used it that way. This was a few years ago.
  20. Check the plugs. Water in a cylinder will steam blast everything clean. You should be able to see the difference in the plugs cleanliness. I don't recommend running pure water.
  21. Well, it was wonderful that the old girl decided to start again and finish the trip!
  22. Yeah, I'm embarrassed! I really wasn't looking at what I was doing. But the oil on the calipers is bad news. No wonder it wouldn't stop! The rear tire was about all the brakes I had a couple days ago when I rode it about 20 miles. I replaced the fork seals twice on my Kawasaki ZN700 in the first couple years of ownership (bought in 2009). Looks like the Venture is a whole lot more work. And I may as well install some progressive springs while I'm at it. I need to go read all the instructions on the forum after we get through with my son's Mustang. It's a new 2015 GT with the performance package and he still had to swap out the springs, sway bars, shifter, and a ton of other stuff to destroy the ride and get rid of wheel hop. Makes me sad to think about it. But, it's his car. Ain't mine. We did the same thing to his 2004 Mustang GT almost a decade ago. It's a good thing the wife is on a 2 week trip back to her homeland. Maybe we'll have it together by the time she gets back. It took us 3 very long days to do the first one. Long days aren't in my vocabulary any more!
  23. Thanks guys! I'm confused. In my defense, my son from NYC is in my garage and we are installing a suspension kit in his new Mustang and I'm not paying much attention to what I was doing on the bike!!
  24. OMG, So, I took the bling off the left front caliper and it is missing the 2 bolts that hold it on too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like partzilla will get an order in a couple minutes. It also looks like the left side fork seal is leaking!!! The caliper is covered in oil. Looks like I need to tear this bike apart and build it from the ground up. The clutch slave is leaking. The carbs are in need. I need to install the 4 brush starter. On and On.
  25. Yep, I was confused. I was looking at the 4 allen head bolts. Turns out my RF caliper doesn't have the two bolts that hold it in place. They FELL OUT somewhere. The caliper bling was holding the caliper somewhat in place!!!! That might help explain why the RF brake wasn't working well!!
