Not venomous, but I'm still not applying!

When I was there last August, I stayed in the Fairfield Inn in Spearfish. Directly across the highway we ate at a buffet the last night there and they had the best fried chicken. I regret not asking about the batter they used on the chicken.

Hey, speaking as a fat old man as most of the venture riders members seem to be, I applaud the less than perfect women who have enough self confidence to show off their stuff! It's Sturgis bike week after all. More power to them! Seems to be the typical male attitude, we want a 10 in a woman even if we are only a 2!
-
I found Sturgis surprisingly tame. I suppose they have enough LEO's around to maintain civility. And the few scantilly dressed women I saw I suspect were paid models. They were young, absolutely gorgeous, and would pose for photos with you if you asked. I've seen the youtube videos about Sturgis too and I didn't see anything like that. But, I left before dark and maybe it gets wilder later at night. If you are expecting a wild and woolly town that isn't safe you will be disappointed.

For those of us who never had the priviledge of meeting Black Owl, does anyone have any photos they could post? Thanks

oil filter 1st gen cartridge

A couple of days ago, I bought a WIX oil filter for my 85 Kawasaki from O'Reillys Auto Parts. I didn't ask but I suspect they could supply the Venture filter also. I looked in Walmart first and they did have 3 different Fram motorcycle oil filters on the shelf but nothing that would fit my bikes. -

I bought one for my 89 Venture from NAPA. The number is NAPA PS4933. It's made by WIX. -
I will be signing up. I mentioned it to the wife and she didn't say Hxll No! I'm 73 as of a couple days ago so she thinks I'm getting old. But I know better! She's working full time and doesn't like to ride so she won't be coming. I'm not sure what I'll be riding. A new battery and all the Gumout I put in the 85 Kawasaki has almost gotten it back to full speed but the Venture needs lots of attention, fork seals, clutch slave cylinder rebuild, carb work, etc. Last night I ordered a gel seat cushion for the Kawasaki. No way I could stay in the saddle that long on the stock seat.

I was there Monday and Tuesday of bike week. Yeah, there were lots of people and bikes but I didn't have much trouble finding a place to park my truck and every time I wanted a beer or food I didn't have to wait. So, I can't complain about the crowds. If I went again I'd want to go during bike week. There were those beautiful girls walking around scantily dressed to spike my attention. My son who happened to be driving from Los Angeles to NYC detoured to Sturgis met me there. I think he enjoyed it a lot too.

funky carb issue!
BlueSky replied to Venturerscott's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Even though you said it had spark, the spark could be weak. Have you cleaned the wiring connections? How old are the spark plug wires? I clipped a half inch off mine and it seemed to make a difference. The copper core at the cap ends was corroded. -
I don't know if the police are the same all year but during bike week, they will give you a ticket for 1 mph over the limit.

It is very close to Sturgis. Last summer I spent a several days in Sturgis and Deadwood during the bike event. I enjoyed it a lot. I was driving my truck after touring Wyoming for a week with my wife. I also visited Mt. Rushmore which is close by. If you watch the HBO series Deadwood, it will help you understand some of the history of the town. I think it is still available to watch.

Today I rode it for about 3 miles and it is accelerating better but it still bogs some. Monday I will get it inspected and plate renewed so I can ride it a lot and hopefully the PEA will finish the job.

PEA, polyetheramine, is supposed to be the best fuel injection cleaner. Chevron Techron was the first to use PEA and is the only FI cleaner that Ford recommends. Now many brands of FI cleaner are using it. I buy Gumout for high mileage engines that supposedly has a higher dose of PEA. It has worked very well for me. My 150hp Yamaha FI two stroke outboard developed a miss and started giving an overheat alarm on one side. I put two bottles of it in the gas tank and the miss and alarm cleared up quickly. (I'm so glad that the outboard has FI!) I usually put a bottle of it in the gas tank of all my autos every 6 to 12 months and I feel the difference in the throttle response.

85 Kawasaki ZN700 Keihin carbs When the battery died, I let it sit for about a year and like a big dummy I didn't drain the carbs. Finally installed a new battery. I had a leaky fuel valve so I removed the gas tank, dumped it and washed the rust particles out with gasoline and rebuilt the fuel valve. The screen was good and I made sure my fuel filter was clear. I had to use starter fluid to get it started. It ran really ragged on two cylinders. So, I poured a half bottle of Gumout for high mileage engines into about a gallon of gas and I have been starting it and running it or a few minutes and letting it sit for several weeks. Today is the first day it fired on all four cylinders. It runs good at idle but still is not quite right. It doesn't accelerate well so I'm hoping the cleaner didn't destroy the diaphragms in the carbs. Anyhow, I'll keep you updated so you can decide if you'd like to try Gumout (with PEA) in your gas to clean up carbs. By the way, I bought an infrared thermometer from Autozone and I love it! I used it to check the exhaust pipes temperatures and could tell which cylinders were firing and how well they were firing compared to the hottest temp! I highly recommend this tool!

What the Heck
BlueSky replied to SpencerPJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
kickstand down trans in gear kill switch If neither, you need to start troubleshooting with a wiring diagram. I just googled "motorcycle no start troubleshooting video" and a bunch of videos popped up. Watch some of those to get the idea about how to troubleshoot the issue. -
One tip about riding the Blue Ridge Parkway is that there aren't many places to buy gasoline so keep the tank as full as possible.

Las Vegas Vacation in August Recommendation???
BlueSky replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
It depends on what you enjoy. The Grand Canyon isn't that far away. And a little farther will get you to Monument Valley. I really enjoyed Monument Valley where John Ford filmed all those John Wayne western movies. All of the shows I've been to were great. Most of the ones I've been to are the Cirque de Soliel shows. My wife even won about $300 playing the slots last time. I think I lost $20. -
I got really cheap Liability Ins when I first bought my 85ZN700 in Wisconsin. When I registered it in NC, the cost went up. I was told that the riding season being longer justified the increase in Ins. cost.
-
I suspect it could be bought for a lot less than $2999. With all those miles, not many riders would want it. And you can buy a much lower mile Venture for just a little more. Craiglist in my area has an 08 advertised for $4600.

Happy to hear your 88 Venture is treating you well!

These politicians do get into office by the citizens voting for them? right? Sounds like it's time for a voter rebellion.
