  1. Scuff, I just did the same thing two days ago on my 89. Real easy to do. There is a thread somewhere (I found and now can't!) that has pics and is thorough. Took me less than an hour...and it was my first time... You can call if you need help...cell in personal info... david
  2. Just got back after a 2 hour ride.....getting warm. 1: Oil change good. no leaks, Engine/shifting/gear whine is quieter. 20-50 YamaLube. Driveline whine on decel still bothersome but will compare when KIC and I get together. 2: Radio/CB/intercom. It's quieter, but no cigar. Still have ignition noise on entire system so the Amplifier must be at fault. No change with electrical load, only rpm. CB seems to work mucho better...heard plenty of truckers....didn't test transmit. I'll wait until I can ride with someone and we will test range. AM/FM works better too. So Firestik is working well. 3: Tires are tracking better since I kicked the rear up to max for tire. I was getting cupping running at Yamaha recommended pressure. Ride is a bit harsher, but I can live with that. Rough roads are just that. (suspension set on auto, pos#1) 4: Only problem was the rough road broke the tab at bottom of right side panel. I had repaired it with fiberglass and epoxy, but the stress of the rubber band and the roads...did it in. Going to have to rebuild even stronger...fiberglass both sides of tab....the heck with appearances. 5: Hit 50 mpg after 126 miles on Odometer...most speeds at 55 t0 60...5th gear. 42mpg seems to be my average for mixture of town/freeway at 65 - 75mph ... so far since May. 6: Audio adapter worked fine. Tried it on way home after riding and listening to check out bike. Was really nice to cruze quietly listening to tunes! My Etymotic Research earbuds are worth every penny for the noise reduction and sound quality. I'm learning this scoot!
  3. Bill, No...not in Tucson on bike. I'm in Tucson at least once a week at Costco, or visiting the kidlet I have going to school at U of A. Would appreciate the help and advice when it's time. I know you are pretty busy...so I'll call or PM you when I get ready so I can give you plenty of lead time... Thank you, david
  4. +1 what Kevin said. Replace the stuff with new. No sense messing around with an unknown.
  5. Been checking everything out. Did the oil/filter change, changed out the antenna, took the trunk off and cleaned up the Class hardware...cleaned connections and checked hoses, replaced right side front brake pads, bled brakes, and just cleaning everything I see. Got the bike delivered in April and I've been having fun learning. Today, I took the Class computer out, took it apart and soldered the plug connections on the circuit board. Found two bad ones. Works like a champ now. Was intermittent before.. Decided NOT to get into the drive shaft and rear end and greasing everything until I get some help. Just not feeling good about dropping front end and messing around with 800 pounds by myself. That and new brake pads for rear are what I have left to do. So far, this forum has been a godsend. Besides the tremendous knowledge available here, the friendship I can see in the banter back and forth makes me feel like I've found a resource that can never be duplicated anywhere else! Best dam $$ I've ever spent...seriously! Thanks! david
  6. If I understand the above thread: http://www.roadstercycle.com/ The FH020AA offered at the above site at $94.95 would be a direct replacement for my 1st gen 89?
  7. James....wow! Just now reading this thread...thank you for the update. Sending our thoughts and prayers to your sis and family....for continued success!!
  8. After mucho thinking, Decided to not get fancy with audio system on my 89VR. Simply ordered the Edsets universal adapter and got it today. 2 day shipping. It plugs right into the 5pin that sits on the tank. From there I can plug in my helmet headphones and have full stereo and CB to the cans, or, plug in my earbuds and have same functionality and quieter ride! Worth it...no wiring issues to deal with, no mods to make...just a simple plug in... 5pin to 5pin...pass through http://www.edsets.com/images/super/super_univadapters.png david
  9. Sure looks like fun to ride the Cannonball. Hmmm....wonder if I can just tag along and pay my own way!!!
  10. If you go to Memphis, try to make it during the Piggy festival. BBQ! Might even have ice cream!
  11. Summer of 69. I was in Mississippi, near Brookhaven, helping a buddy build a 3 bedroom house for his wife's parents. That Fall, I went into the USAF...so I was out of college looking for something to kill my time as a delayed enlistment. So yes,we were watching!
  12. But what about the 1 generation bikes? Anybody make a good long distance seat for us?
  13. > I just did the same for my 89. Nice guy there, ordered two, they came in overnight at no charge to me. $13 and change for 2.
  14. And...always remember.... If your rear locks up....you need to keep your head up...eyes out to horizon. this helps to keep you and the bike from sliding out from under you. We go where we look... So grab the brakes, if rear locks, keep head up and keep front brake on...releasing rear then back on. Saved my bacon...and I was taught 40 years ago to lay the bike down!!!
  15. Merlin, Both are very good manufacturer's. The issue is your own. We all fit different seats. Those who ride the Mustangs like them. I've owned two of them and both were harder than the stock seat, sat me farther forward but worked very well on the 650 Classic but not so well on the 950T. I find the 950 Mustang sits me to far forward...to close to tank. The Corbins are harder...but big people love the support. The Ultimates are most expensive, but those who like them...love them! The only solution is to find a way to try them. Buy from a reputable dealer so if a return can happen, it will be painless...
  16. I heard a similar thing...2015 will include a new Venture. Regardless, if they keep the V4, they only have to change the electronics and fuel delivery to keep it a viable engine...unless...they may have emission issues. But I can't see that, FI should be better than carbs. Well...we have another year to enjoy our rides...then we shall see..
  17. I'm hoping the Venture likes the 20-50 weight out here in Arizona's heat. Come Fall, will go back to 10-40 for winter riding....
  18. Good find! Only question I have is it really printed from clean data or scanned like the 3rd party manuals. I'd hate to spend $100 for a scanned copy...
  19. I used KR's Method he got from his friend. Bought the same products, but buffed by hand instead of the buffer. Got most of the scratches out and my original windscreen is so much better. Was thinking tomorrow might be a good day to take the windshield off and devote more time to it. Get out the buffer and do the process again. Takes an hour or so to do a good job and I have time to kill tomorrow anyway!!
  20. Yikes, that's beautiful! So how much more does she way over my 89 1st gen??
  21. Just did my first oil change with filter on the 89VR. Took my time, fudged around...figured out what was what, with a little help...of course! Added Yamalube 20-50 ...3.5 qrts. After running for a few to check for leaks...oil level is just above mid-level. I run same oil on my 950T vtwin. Runs quiet, shifts smoothly...so...bottom line for me is good ole dino oil.
  22. Thought so... about the washer. Well...next time I'll put one on there. No leaks during run up...but have to wait until the weather cools down so I can go for a real ride and see if I did everything right. BTW, the Fram type filter did not have O-rings with it but the Wix 24933 did. So got two of those.. Thanks, guys....
  23. Drained oil...everything looked good. Took filter assembly off, but couldn't get filter out of it's home. Finally used the socket and turned the bolt, while holding filter. "screwed" right out. Underneath, one spring. Thought maybe a washer to go between filter and spring, but nada. My bike does not have an O-ring around the bolt outside, rather a seal...similar to the two seals on either side of, and part of, the filter. It wasn't leaking so I'll put all back the same way. Put some oil on filter O-ring and tightened up to spec. Note: The drain bolt was on tighter than 31ftlbs. No O-ring or gasket there either. I did test the oil warning light and it worked. Now to run the bike and see what happens... Not bad at all...although I'm still a bit intimidated laying under or near the bike. Funny, I've rebuilt engines before and crawled under cars for fun and to save a few bux, but this bike scares me...and I DID strap the center stand open to the bike frame so it wouldn't accidently fall off forward. Maybe getting to be an ole fart has something to do with it. I know I'm not invincible!
  24. > OK....that makes sense except .... Got the oil filter assembly on the bench and can't get the filter out. The seal (not O-ring) around the shaft looks brand new and I don't want to pry it to hard...
  25. Took a dremel to the screw end..cut out a nice slot. Had to shape a cutoff wheel small enough to get in there. Even using a 90 degree flat screwdriver, I wasn't able to budge the screw. Started to bung up the screw...guess it's pretty soft. Quit while ahead. May have to find some way to remove mirror (don't want to break it!). Or simply put some epoxy around the adjustable joint. Thin coat will retard movement but I could easily break it off by a little bit of force. Epoxy by itself isn't that strong... I'll see if I was able to get it better or worse whenever I next ride. Oil change now...have two "O" rings...book shows one. Where does the little one go???
