  1. Pie Town, New Mexico.....
  2. I concur with Bob. I shift when I feel the revs are getting up there. It's a "feeling". I try for the same revs as the `1st Gen I have. Usually that equates to around 4K. I do stay in 4th for anything under 60mph. She is comfortable at that range and gets better mpg's than if I shifted to 5th at that speed. 5th truly is an overdrive...as is 4th! BUT...the only real way for you to figure this out for yourself is to do what Flyin said...wind it out in gear and pay attention to engine vibrations and sounds as you go. When you hit the limiter...shift. You'll know when...it's like the bike throws out an anchor! Do it a few times to get the feel of your bike. Be advised...hitting the rev limiter in 4th will put you way over any speed limit in the US....so be warned. Heck...I can break the freeway speed limit down here (75) in 3rd! I would hit the limiter in only first three gears just to keep out of jail....!! BTW...when the higher rpms get excessive...that's a good indication it's time to balance the carbs. Normally, you can hardly feel the engine running these V4's are that smooth... Enjoy! david
  3. Beautiful. Enjoy the ride, the rest and the Memorial Ride.
  4. ((I often wonder what the Venture Royale could have developed into had they not abandoned it in 1993.)) My mind boggles with the thought. They were ahead of their time at that time...all they had to do was continue development.
  5. @VanRiver - Green Valley. South of Tucson. Come Fall...when I ride up to Phoenix...we should plan and meet and eat!
  6. Steve, Put the axle back in place without anything else. Does it move in/out freely? It should. If not...your pumpkin is out of line. Loosen the four pumpkin nuts, put axle back in...tighten nuts. Try axle again. Should move in/out of the rear arm holes easily. (long shot) When you tighten the axle nut, you are compressing everything into position. So there is movement between the swing arm, the bushings/bearings...etc.. Tighten the axle nut then look at the caliper, the washer, etc., can the axle still turn with a screwdriver in hole? What's to tight? The next step would be to go back to beginning and re-assemble everything..making sure the washers and stuff are in the proper place AND direction. (if memory serves isn't there a piece or two that needs to be facing one way??) OH...are the swing arm bushings good? Not compressing something in the arm? Just trying to think out loud here... Hope you can find it... david
  7. James, whereabouts in Az are you? OH...in 1986 I would have bought the Venture. Hands down.
  8. One thought when putting fairing back together. Seat the screws first before tightening them. You may have to wiggle the fairing to get the screws to thread. Other that that, it's a very easy procedure. Once off, lots of room to do things....like add LED's instead of reflectors using Dion's wiring kits! (shameless plug) Grins! david
  9. When RB gets back in the saddle...let him work over your pillow tops, Dan. If he narrows the front a tad, you'll be able to reach the ground easier. Plus he adds a touch of foam...making it a better shape. He did my VStar...the factory seat was sad....and I sold my Mustangs as the re-worked stock seat was now better! Mr. Butler...I'm waiting patiently so you can have fun with my pillow tops! david
  10. Craig, those Corbin's sure do look nice. To spend around $1K for a seat, a backrest and a trunk mounted rest for her...is a bit much. Will keep this in mind though if I can find one used... Thanks! david
  11. Puc, Sodium intake is more about the sodium found in processed foods, not the table salt we use to season with. The amount of table salt we use is minor in terms of overall sodium intake. Putting less salt on foods will be negligible in terms of reducing your sodium intake. Yes it will be less, but minor in comparison. Eating less processed foods would be a major change....huge change. Yea...blood in urine after a procedure is normal for some time. Good to hear about the prostate. If that is the type of cancer you have, then observation is the best choice. Many guys have gone years without issues with a slow growing prostate cancer. Surgical choices have improved tremendously in the past 10 yeas...I imagine they will continue to improve as well...giving you a better outcome despite being older and less able to handle the stresses of surgery. Crossing fingies and toes....and...Prayers Up! david
  12. I did move the trunk back last week. She complained that it was nice to have more room, but that position still wasn't as good as the 1st gen with the adjustable back rest... sigh.
  13. Know what I just noticed? The new version doesn't appear to be able to be hand cranked! Shame of it all!
  14. Yep...did that as well. Caught it when reviewing pics of procedure from this site to see what I left out. Did I feel dumb? Yep!
  15. My problem is not that it's to hot, but that it lets the hot air in! It's getting to the point around here that it's time to go back to leather....anything over 102 or so and I want the leather back on. Yea, it's hot, but the hot air isn't sucking the life out of you...like this would.. david
  16. Here is the problem: Wifemate loves the adjustable backrest on the 1st Gen. She is small and has a bad back...and enjoys leaning back a bit. Unfortunately, In the 2nd Gen, Yamaha left that feature on the design room floor. Oberservation: I took the back rest off...3 screws and one bolt in center. Looks to me like I could use a router type tool and give the three screws a short fore/aft channel to slide in. Would need less than an half inch I would think to allow the unit to be "forced" backwards to achieve a slight lean. However, I would have to shave off some plastic on the backrest center bolt standoff to allow movement backwards. I'm a bit timid about shaving off plastic not knowing what is under there or how thick it might not be....SO......decided against that for the moment. Thinking I could also add padding in lower part of backrest and reduce it on top part to give the backrest a "lean angle" as well.....but have never worked on this type stuff. Maybe when Mr. Butler is better he can be talked into modifying my backrest! 1ST Solution attempt: Rather than drill, route out the top of the trunk, I decided to put a couple of washers on the center bolt so it would lift up the bottom of the backrest a tad more than 1/8inch. Just enough purchase left on the bolt to allow the washers and nut to tighten. This, in effect, pushes the bottom of the backrest up just a touch...leaning the backrest back a tad. Guess if I want more, I can go with a thinner washer. Don't think the thin plastic on the trunk lid will crack with the slight pressure. The 3 screws fit back in fine so everything "feels" like I did something right! We shall see if that helps any. Be a few weeks until we get to ride again....and then I'll know. david
  17. Sounds like you are bottoming out on the shocks or the shocks are hitting something at end of travel.. It would be normal to hear the click at the top of the system since the fairing will funnel the sound right up to you...as well as the mechanical linkage between the metal shocks and the metal suspension and steering are all tied together. I would put about 5 pounds of air in front shocks with manual pump and go for test ride. If she still bottoms out, you have two problems...both the springs and air suspension are not working. If the air helps, then the mechanical side (springs) are not working. Broken spring maybe? Something broke inside? Time to take things apart and a good looksee...
  18. I wave all the time. If someone doesn't reply, I think they either didn't see (most likely) or are a jerk. Of course if we are curving through the mountains I understand 2 hands on the bars. Also...most HD riders do respond. To me, those most likely not to respond are sport bike riders. To big for their high tech riding shorts and tshirts, I guess.
  19. Cool! Easy to do. Thanks for write up and pictures!
  20. Love your travels! I enjoy riding along...
  21. Morgan. Loved the looks of their +4 back in the 50's. And then the classic Super Sport.... Good to see they are still a round....!
  22. (I have used a lot of Seafoam, especially with the stuck float, would the new plugs I put in a month ago be fouled by the Seafoam? I did a pretty concentrated dose with the float, and have used a whole can over the last few weeks.) That does hurt the plugs, but doubt that would be the "all-of-a-sudden" problem...
