Ordering tires online?

Searching for a rear tire to replace the rear tire on Royal Star. Probably go back with the same Metzler sz style etc as was on there. Called local dealer to see what they would charge and they were $20-30 higher than what I was finding them online. But in his best sales pitch the parts guy says, "the ones you get for that price online are blemished or seconds". So I thought I have bought alot of tires from dealers online and have never had any problems with them. But now the seeds are sown and it makes me wonder. I thought if a tire was a blem or second it had to be noted and marked that way. Any one ever had a problem ordering a tire online?

I do it all the time I do not think ANY dealer would sale a Blem or whatever tire as I would think the legal liabilties for failure would really be bad..I am assuming you have run Metz. Now just my personal opinion IF you are going with Metz and evidently you have had good luck,PLEASE watch the rear for the dreaded chunking of rubber alot of us have experienced. Mine only made it to 1700 miles before they started throwing rubber..Now ALOT on here have had NO trouble but No more for me. Tom

I'm not going to tell you what tire to get, but I will tell you to not get the Metzler. The best place I have found online to get tires is.

Southwest Moto. http://arizonamoto.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=SWMT&Category_Code=MTCYTIRES

If you buy two then shipping is free. If they have the tire in stock I usually get them in 3 days and I live on the East coast.

If you get the chance at the stealer, look at the sticker on the new tires. You will see which distributor they came from. Nearly all are the same that you will get online.

Many here have bought online from www.SWMototires.com and been VERY happy. Myself included. My tires had a Tucker Rocky distributor sticker on them. Same that I have seen at dealerships.

This SAME thread was discussed on another MC forum I get on. Concensus is, the dealer is feeding you a line of bull.

I see you are in Tulsa. If you are talking with M&W Powersports in Broken Arrow, be very wary. They wanted $120 for a Dunlop D404 (for my VStar 650 that I got for $75) plus another $50 install. When I told them I would get my own tire, they said $100 install. This was even after I bought the bike from them.

IMO, K&N Yama is much better. Again, Just my opinion. Yep, lived in Glenpool for 12 years.

I think that they "2nds" theory is a bunch a bull, they are just trying to scare you into buying the tire from them.

I bought my last tire from http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/tires.asp and had great luck. The shipping wasn't free, but since I was only buying 1 tire it was cheaper than southwest moto (a couple of $). I ordered the tire on a Monday night online and got the tire on Thursday.

By law, any tire sold as a second in the United States must be marked as "BLEM" stamped into the sidewall. These tires are absolutely and totally safe - the only possible issue is a blemish. Often this is the case where a white wall tire has a little of the underlying white showing through the black top layer where it should not. The point is, a BLEM is nothing more than a cosmetic imperfection.

The federal government is VERY strict on tire safety standards. As much as I HATE the friggin government sticking its nose into everything where it shouldn't be, this one is a good thing. You can be absolutely assured that IF you do chose to by a BLEM tire, it will be completely safe.

Now that I have said all of that, I will assure you that you will NEVER buy a BLEM from an on-line dealer without knowing it up front. Selling one without disclosing it is also illegal, as far as I know. Frankly, that dealer has shown you that they are extremely dishonest. I would NEVER go into their place of business again.

I ordered my tires on line from dennis kirk.. (try dennis kirk.com) i ordered them on tuesday afternoon, and got them on wednesday... of course they are out of minnesota.. got free shipping also...

I'm sure they don't do this with all their tiresd but they sold me two that were 6 yeras old and the begining of my second season with them they wouldn't pass inpection due to dry rot. Luckily the manufacturer gave me a second pair for free.

Yup, getting an old tire that has been sitting in stock somewhere is definitely a risk, no matter where you buy them. Only way I know how to avoid that is try to only order tires from a place that sells a lot of 'em. If you have any doubts, tell the place in writing that you will only accept a tire less than X years old (I'd suggest two years) and that you expect them to cover return shipping if they send you anything older. And make sure you check the date code as soon as you get them.

I have never gotten anything over 8 months old from SWMotoTires, but the only sizes I have ordered from them have been for the RSV. Got two Venom rear tires in the garage right now that came from them - both were born on the 15th week of 2008 (about 3 months old). :080402gudl_prv:

Thanks everyone. Really was thinking about another Metz. Have gotten many miles out of the one that came on the bike. Only thing obvious is the thinning in the middle and the edge doing the cupping. Other than that it has been good.

Yep going with K&N to do the change out. I'll take the rim to em tho'.

Thanks SS

OK of all y'all that have responded here about the tires, in your opin's. What tire would you get right now today if you were buying? Keep in mind I ride mostly highway miles. Alot two up. I do not ride hard when two up. Sometimes I kick it up when by myself.

That being said the Metzler was on the bike, and had about 3000 miles when we got the bike. We rode it home to OK from TN. On the second day it rained all the way from Paragould to Tulsa we rode 412 all the way and I never felt uneasy or uncomfortable on a new bike. Can't say the same had I been on the RoadStar! We have put about another 7000 on that tire.
