cwkane Posted September 23, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2014 At the expense of wearing out my welcome as a new member with question on my new ride, I have an 05 RSV I notice it creeks (groans) when I sit on it (insert joke here). It sounds like a dry rubber bushing or something. Any ideas, this is my first bike of this size and shaft driven thus the question.
MidlifeVenture Posted September 23, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) First signs of shock failure. There was a post about adding some fork oil in the air valve to help lubricate the upper seals in the shock. Seems very common on this bike. Bert2006 Posted September 23, 2014 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2014 I have an 06 that does the same thing once in a while. Usually as the temperature drops and only the first time in the morning. Had the bike for 2 years and did it from the get go. I keep between 30 and 40lbs of air pressure in it.
XV1100SE Posted September 23, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 23, 2014 I have an 06 that does the same thing once in a while. Usually as the temperature drops and only the first time in the morning. Had the bike for 2 years and did it from the get go. I keep between 30 and 40lbs of air pressure in it. 2nd that. Mine's been groaning first thing in the morning and goes away. No leaks, usually run 25psi in the rear.
cwkane Posted September 23, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted September 23, 2014 I'll have to check the pressure in the rear, who know what the shop did!
djh3 Posted September 23, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 23, 2014 Good possibility its bushings.Check for leakage on the shock to be sure.
ragtop69gs Posted September 23, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 23, 2014 Mine did the same thing, groan first thing in morning when weather was cool. I gave it a shot of oil into the air valve and into the breather tube from the shock that runs next to the battery, that cured it for quite awhile. cwkane Posted September 23, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted September 23, 2014 So does it have to be fork oil or can I use any light weight oil?
N3FOL Posted September 23, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 23, 2014 Mine does groan in the morning and also goes away. Some mornings it groan and some mornings it doesn't groan at all. I keep at least 35 psi on the rear.
Condor Posted September 23, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 23, 2014 My '07 groans in the morning.... Just like me. After the initial complaint it's fine. 45psi.
etcswjoe Posted September 23, 2014 Share #11 Posted September 23, 2014 All this time I thought it was my bones groaning, glad to hear it's the bike and not me.
eusa1 Posted September 23, 2014 Share #12 Posted September 23, 2014 oil in the air bladder will not address this concern. it is often a sign of failure to come, but not a guarantee . the noise your hearing is where the chrome has become thin on the shaft of the shock and the rust starts to appear in a short overnight setting and the rust against the oil seal creates a noise until the oil and seal has past over it a few times within the first few bumps of the ride and lubricates the area. eventually it will destroy the seal and the oil will run past until empty. mike
MikeWa Posted September 23, 2014 Share #13 Posted September 23, 2014 Could be shock. Could be swing arm bushings. If it is consistent and you just have to know use a stethoscope to isolate the source. Mike
cwkane Posted September 23, 2014 Author Share #14 Posted September 23, 2014 Just got the bike, when I picked it up it was warm out and there was no noise. Over the past few days the temp has been a little cooler and that is when I noticed it. Being a mechanic it sounds like a stiff rubber bushing (thus the cold). Really wanted to toss it out there to see if others experienced the same.
