VentureFar Posted July 16, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2013 Just changed my oil for the first time on my new to me 2007 RSV. . Easiest oil change I have ever done. Plug is obvious and easy to reach. The filter turned off by hand. The big mouth opening oil fill is great. I didn't spill a drop. One question. How often should the crush washer be replaced on the drain bolt? Thanks all VentureFar...
Venturous Randy Posted July 16, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 16, 2013 Many will disagree, but on all the oil changes I have ever done, I have never replaced a crush washer and I don't ever remember one leaking. RandyA

N3FOL Posted July 16, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2013 I've only changed mine once on my caged. On the Venture, I don't think there is one to be replaced.
BMW Posted July 16, 2013 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2013 I have a 2005 with 55,000mls and replaced washer 1 time. no leaks:cool10:
dacheedah Posted July 16, 2013 Share #6 Posted July 16, 2013 I replace it every time and I torque it to spec's. The crush washer protects the threads and is cheap insurance. If it's under warranty you want to follow the manufacturers directions.
djh3 Posted July 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted July 16, 2013 I think I have changed mine once. I got bike with 7400mi and now is 13k something. It was looking like you could tell where the plug was making a line. Si changed it, no leaks though. Use a torque wrench if you have it, overtightening is not good. I also run the slightly longer filter from purolator.
Prairiehammer Posted July 16, 2013 Share #8 Posted July 16, 2013 My drain plug crush washer has been AWOL since I bought the bike. I didn't even know there was supposed to be a crush washer on the drain plug until recently. But it has never leaked in 15000 miles.

Huggy Posted July 16, 2013 Share #13 Posted July 16, 2013 I drained the old oil that's been sitting in the engine for 10 years from my VR. The crush washer was truly crushed! It was in two pieces but no oil was leaking out of the bike. I replaced it since I had a few spare new ones for doing oil changes on my XJ. The XJ will leak if I do not replace it after three oil changes! So why take chances?

Stache Posted July 16, 2013 Share #15 Posted July 16, 2013 I'm a simple man. Manual says to change when changing oil. Cost is negligible. Cost of replacing engine if the worst happens is OMG!!!! Seems pretty simple.
