Religious freedom and motorcycling in Canada

Fridays at work are great...even better when I can fit motorcycles into the Ontario high school curriculum and spend the period talking about biking. Today's law class had a particularly lively discussion though. The evidence from an experiment conducted last year at a local racetrack was presented in Ontario court yesterday, with at least one man's desire that Ontario will be the next Canadian province (in addition to BC and MB) that will allow Sikhs to got helmetless. Very interesting news, and quite the fight our brothers on 2 wheels are putting up to gain this as a right.

Like our Venturerider moderators are already thinking...please, no racial slurs or religious comments should follow this post.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting sick and tired of our government's (Canada) bending to the wishes of every emigrant that comes to this country and expects to live the same as they did in their home countries. I am an emigrant and didn't expect to be treated any different than anyone else and conform to the laws of this province.

If this goes through then everyone should have the same right as it would be reverse discrimination. Personally I wouldn't ride without a helmet but it should be my choice

I disagree JT.

Our Liberties are protect by three boxes:

  1. The Ballot Box
  2. The Jury Box
  3. and The Cartridge Box

If we use those thee properly, we have all that say in the world about what our country does.

I agree completely.. but I also feel its too late for this wishy washy country of ours.... We started down this slippery slope and will not be able to stop... I was bothered by the fact that the country caved in when the Sikhs or sihks won the right to wear their turban as part of any police force we have in the country.. Federal, provincial, and local city...Hell I think they even tried to gain the right to go into the Royal Canadian Legions wearing head gear... that is just not done, you enter a Legion, you remove your "hat" as a respect to all those who fought in previous wars to create and maintain this country..(whats left of it)

Yes WE are ALL immigrants to Canada(native Indians exempt)... But our forefathers who created this country set laws, standards, and traditions, by which we are/were known for... Our governments (whatever party) have totally lost site, of what Canada was for many years.. Their eyes are blinded by the greed of growing larger by population, which in turn creates higher tax revenues.. The US and Australia have the right ideas of how to preserve their OWN HERITAGE...Conform or leave....

Sorry got carried away there...

However on the bright side if this does go through, I am thinking of printing off a few pieces of nice black cloth with white lettering "YAMAHA VENTURE OR VENTURE RIDERS". Those interested could wrap their head in these bandanas...er....turbans and go cruising if they so wished...

Is there a photo id card we have to carry stating religious background..???

"While the Crown case initially questioned the sincerity of Mr. Badesha's religious convictions, its main argument is now based on increased costs to the health system, should helmetless Sikh motorcycle riders end up suffering head injuries."

Get ready to hear this argument in the States if we ever get Hillarycare

or Obamacare. It will be used to try and regulate everything from cigarettes to firearms.-Jack

I agree!!! I also have an opinion about allowing them to ride with thier turbans instead of wearing a helmet, but, I am much wiser not expressing it. (people might think I'm a bigot)

Many imigrants come to our country and want to change it to be like their country. They forget that there was a reason that they left their home country.

While I am so greatful to be living in Canada and next door to the United States I recognize that part of what makes these two countries great is tolerance. However, sometimes this tolerance goes too far and we end up standing for nothing.

Rest assured and unfortunately if I was in many other countries in the world my beliefs would not be met with near the tolerance that their beliefs are met with here.

Ever since our 'Whitewater' - 'WhiteOwl' combo, many folks seem to think that being a bigot is a bad thing, or 'politically incorrect'.

Did someone empower the media's 'Thought-Police' & forget to tell me?

It will take more than some clown's version of 'Political Correctness' to negate our 1st amendment right to 'Free Speech'.

NEWS FLASH

Today, an Ontario judge ruled against Badesha ordering him to pay the $110 fine for not wearing a helmet, which is weird because 2 provinces are already exempting Sikhs from wearing them. Perhaps the judge is doing this so the case gets appealed to higher courts that will make a ruling binding on the whole country.

I personally don't think the courts should waste anymore of our TAX money on this issue. Motorcycling is not a right, is not a necessity and is not guaranteed by the Charter. To ride a motorcycle you must have a drivers license with a motorcycle endorsement, another privelege not a right, and you must follow the traffic laws or risk revocation of your license. Simple (at least to me) you don't want to follow the laws, I revoke your license, now you don't have to worry about having your religious freedoms trampled by having to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle instead of the turban. Perhaps a simplistic view but I too am tired of the vocal minority being catered to because our politicians haven't the nerve to speak up for fear of appearing bigotted and therby losing the ethnic vote when up for re-election. Can't jeopardize that indexed pension don't you know.:stirthepot:

So to keep it short????? Who says he has to ride a motorcycle? Will the next thing be that he wants to work steel without a hardhat?

OR.... he could wear a helmet and he could wrap his bath towel around the helmet!

Then again... maybe we should let him ride without a helmet. Cuz sooner or later he is going to crack his head open and then ... it just won't matter anymore!

I agree with you guys... if the towel head does not want to abide by our laws then he shouuld take his nappy butt back across the pond to the hole he crawled out of!!! So many foreigners do not come here to enjoy the freedoms available. Instead they come from their backwards socialistic depressed environment and are determined to make this country looks like the junk they just let.

grrrr.... gotta stop. My blood pressure is rising!
