Ok, who put the straw in strawberry?

you don't know - well, i'll tell ya -

who put the freak in french fries?

you don't know - well, i'll tell ya - there aint no freakin french fries.

 

know what else no one knows - including me -

which way the freakin grommts go on my gas tank.

no one can take a minute and look at their 2nd gen

AND TELL ME HOW THE GROMMET IS ORIENTED.

 

do you know how frustrating it is to ask a simple question and get no responses.

Well, you make me feel almost bad enought to go out and pull my tank off so I can answer you. :crying: Problem with that is, my tank is full and I got a bad back, so no can do. I been trying to remember how it goes but I'm old and my memory ain't so good neither. Crap, now I do feel rotten.:bawling: Some one help this man.:think:

Take the LEFT grommet and put it in your RIGHT hand and stand in front of a mirror. Take careful note of which direction the left edge of the grommet is pointing and.... DON'T INSTALL IT THAT WAY!! :rasberry: :witch_brew:

let me take an educated guess and see what you all think.

 

the fat part goes to the inside so it will cushion the tank as we tighten down the bolt with the big non chromed washer that secures the tank to the frame.

 

tomorrow should be nice here in louisiana and i may be able to get the thing on and go for a ride.

If you don't remember how it was when you took it apart then just go to the starmotorcycles site and look at the parts view

i have looked at this already along with the service manual and the user manual. I did that before posting. i can't tell from the picture which end is larger. If you can, please let me know.

Sorry, but as usual I'm out of town and I would have to drive a pretty good ways to take a look. I will be home later today though and if you don't figure it out before then, I will gladly pull my gas tank and take a look. I've never removed the grommets so really haven't paid any attention to them.

Sorry, mine is covered, tank is full and sea-foamed, battery tender is attached, and we have 7 or 8 inches of snow on the ground. Isn't it amazing how the little problems can cause such huge delays in a project. Uhh, now where is the "enter" key?

Here are some pics I just took of the right hand side.

 

Looks to me like the larger diameter goes on the inside.

Ok everyone, we have a winner. the fat/larger side of the grommet goes to the inside.

I will hopefully take care of this tonight. I appreciate everyone chiming in and those who provided mental support.

 

I just may get a ride in this evening if all goes well.
