Unidentified Cover/Lid?
Prairiehammer replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just take the six screws that hold your plastic panel (that used to contain the CB and CLASS) onto the fairing and replace with the pictured glove box and add the hinged cover. The OEM cover had no more support than this glovebox and it was carrying the weight of the CB and CLASS. -

fuel tank cover lid fix?
Prairiehammer replied to alvald83's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Al, Did the screws strip out of the ABS plastic door? Are the bosses that the screws screwed into still there? If so, try finding a SLIGHTLY larger diameter self tapping screw of the appropriate length and gently screw it into the bosses. Failing that, you might consider utilizing rivnuts (internally threaded pop rivets) and appropriately length screws. Failing that, just drill through the lid and install some nuts and bolts with locking washers. If you can find stainless or chrome truss head screws they would provide a low profile and more decorative appearance. -
Unidentified Cover/Lid?

It would be easier and maybe looking more original if you removed the panel from your bike and replaced it with the inner "glove box" from any First Gen STANDARD (no CB, no CLASS). Here is one: http://tinyurl.com/mt6elme And another: http://tinyurl.com/ks464ao Here is one on sale: http://tinyurl.com/lnbpwfy Here is one with multiple views to show what it looks like. Maybe can get enough info from those pics to make one? http://tinyurl.com/mg74zo5 You will probably want the hinged cover that attaches to the glove box, too. Here is one: http://tinyurl.com/muhsscn And here is a package including the glove box and a cover: http://tinyurl.com/k6wzz7r -
Mine was getting loose on one edge, so I removed it completely with help of a putty knife and braided fishing line; scraped all the foam tape remains from the fender and mascot; cleaned any adhesive residue with WD40 and Goo Gone; cleaned off the WD40 with rubbing alcohol; reapplied the mascot with Gorilla™ TAPE.

That's a full quart more than I add when I change oil and filter. So, are we leaving a quart of old oil in the engine nooks and crannies when we change the oil and filter? -

Not all MKII swing arms will fit the MKI suspension linkage. The 1986-1987 MKII swing arms ARE different from the 1988-1993 swing arms, due to redesigned suspension linkage starting in 1988. If you get a swing arm for a 1988-1993 model, the shock linkage from a 1988 or newer will also be needed. The attachment point of the suspension linkage is moved about 1.5" toward the rear in 1988.

Yamaha calls that chrome thing a mascot. Yamaha part number: 3JJ-21577-00-00. Obsolete (not available) now but it had a list price of darn near $100. Keep an eye on eBay for a MKII front fender. Make sure the "mascot" is still attached. Front fenders go pretty cheaply. Here is one complete with mascot. Pinwall says it is from a 1984, but the mascot was not on the 1983-1985. Nevertheless it is what you want: http://tinyurl.com/kmxhlks The mascot/helmet is originally attached via double faced foam tape. The adhesive dries out over the years and eventually the trim often falls off (note the many MKII front fenders on eBay that are missing the mascot).

Which style pilot jet?
Prairiehammer replied to mlew's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
According to that site, the XVZ1200 uses the N151.067 pilot jet. And according to Yamaha, that jet size is 42.5. -
It works really, really well for making the black crinkle painted cylinders and heads on my Z1R black again after a wash. Smells good too, when the engine gets warm.

Lou, The way to check the oil level on your First Gen is on the center stand on a level floor. Keep it halfway between the marks and you are good to go. -
Unidentified Cover/Lid?
Prairiehammer replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe it is for a 1983 or 1984 Royale prior to factory CB. The "glove box" on upper right of the fairing dash. The CLASS would occupy the lower section of the right fairing compartment. Later the CLASS and CB took up most of the space and there is simply the latched door for checking the coolant overflow tank. Here's a pic of a 1984 Royale with that cover. -

And while you are the plumbing section, look for some MEK, the solvent of choice for cleaning ABS. In fact, I have used straight MEK to glue cleanly broken ABS parts. It is one of the solvents in ABS cement. If you don't find MEK in the plumbing section, look in the paint section of your local Home Center, usually next to the acetone (another good solvent for ABS) and other painter solvents.

TCI Box 41R10
Prairiehammer replied to Peder_y2k's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I removed my TCI fairly easily by first removing the airbox and the plastic baffle over the front head and the "boost sensor". Disconnect the TCI wiring connectors and move them out of the way. Then I used a short handled 3/8" drive ratchet with a 1/4" socket installed on the ratchet and a #3 Phillips screwdriver insert (1" long) taped onto the socket to keep it from falling out. Using a mirror to see where to place the driver bit, I wrenched the screws right out. It is important that one use a #3 Phillips to fit the screw heads. Removing the boost sensor is not absolutely required but by doing so, I more easily got a straight shot at the TCI screws. I replaced the boost sensor back into it's stock position, but I replaced the Phillips head screws with ordinary hex headed bolts (to facilitate future removal). The only plastic I removed was the lower fairings and the triangular radiator trim pieces. -

You can get VentureRider business cards made at the site in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2566 Or print your own from these Word templates downloadable from this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=248 But Easy Rider's point of including the business cards with VRStore purchases is good, too. -

Just the manufacturers way of keeping track of manufacturing runs? I dunno, but any 41Rxx will be what you would use on a 1984-1989. See this thread where Snaggletooth asked the same question. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34709 -
Clutch piston
Prairiehammer replied to Loren Fisher's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The middle gear cover gasket is Yamaha Part number 26H-15461-00-00, or 3JP-15461-00-00. It is still available for all the First Gen Ventures and is also used on the First Gen V-Max. Only cost $3 or so. Find another stealer or order on online. -
carb and math question
Prairiehammer replied to Big Lou's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here is a calculator specifically for motorcycles. http://woodsware.aciwebs.com/gears/ If you were running the stock tire (140/80-16): 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 116.2 mph. If you were running a 150/80-16 tire: 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 119.1 mph. If you were running a 150/90-16 tire: 6500 rpm in fifth gear equals 124.7 mph. In the OP you said 150/90-16. In a subsequent post you said 150/80-16. In any case, the tire diameter is less when the weight of the bike and rider is applied, thus my earlier comment about "loaded" tire diameter. However, unbelted bias ply tires do grow at high speed, so maybe the tire diameter is effectively the same as a static unloaded tire. -

The 41R series is for the 1984-1989. The 26H series is for the 1983 only. The 3JJ series is for the 1990-1993. -
BTW, I thought the R1 calipers were anodized blue. How difficult was it to remove the blue? Usually, anodized color is a bear to polish out, but if it was powder coat (paint), stripper would remove the majority, requiring just a bit of mechanical polishing. I like it (the clear aluminum calipers) alot.

I would estimate your speed at about 114.2 mph assuming a 25"± loaded diameter rear tire. -
