"The bitter cold temperatures experienced over much of North America over the last week or so has been caused by a southern shift in the polar vortex, pulling Arctic air down over the continent. According to NASA, the polar vortex is a persistent large area of low pressure, found typically over both the north and south poles. As of yesterday, the polar vortex had pushed down over the north-central US, bringing with it frigid temperatures to areas as far south as Georgia and Alabama."
