I thought about that, but having not pulled that screw previously I didn’t want to introduce another variable. I will be draining from there as well on future oil changes. after sitting overnight, the sightglass is half full so now to just clean up the kitty litter. Gonna head to cycle gear to look for a phone mount and maybe a jacket for the wifey. ps I told her this morning about my oil spillage woes and she just shook her head and said “You know better than that🤦♀️“.

Thanks Rick. Wish I had read this first :). I did not have good results trying to suck out from the fill port using a syringe and hose attached. So I slowly backed off the drain plug with an empty oil quart ready to catch the drippings and wouldn’t you know by the time the oil started flowing it was at the last thread and PLUNK the plug fell in the bottle 😾. Oil flowing everywhere, plugged it with my finger and finally got the bolt back in. Probably half a quart came out all over the floor but the sight glass now looks about half way. Will check it in the morning. I just got the bike last year so the springtime oil change was my first on her, also added the spin on filter adapter so that could have messed with the expected measurements.

I checked the plugs the other day and three of four were nominal. One had slight carbon buildup. I sanded, cleaned and gap checked all just cause I had them in hand. Pulled the diaphragms this afternoon and they look good. do you check oil hot or cold? As there is a significant difference in the sight glass.

Thanks for that info. Can the sight glass be accurately measured if on the center stand? I have this problem being the only one in my family confident enough to sit on a bike and hold it upright so I am never the one who gets to judge what the glass actually reads. Novel idea just popped into my head, maybe I’ll have them FaceTime me the real time visual 🙀

I’ve heard about ISO grips from @luvmy40 but Kuryakin says they don’t fit an 87, heated or not. I found Avon grips that @MiCarl said are nicer than the ISO. Most reviews say the heat of Avon is inconsistent and insufficient at best. Any advice on a quality heated upgrade?

Best speaker upgrade for a Gen 2 ?
Pasta Burner replied to luvmy40's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I just put in Kicker marine in my Gen1 87 and am happy with them, can hear clearly at highway speeds. I’ve been partial to Kicker for decades. -
If the system stays on but only sound cuts out I’d look at the connection between the speakers and the head unit.

Loose throttle / cable
Pasta Burner replied to Pasta Burner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If I’m gonna replace the grips I’d like to do so with some heated ones. I Did a search on google for ISO and just gotta figure out what fits. -
So today while working on a throttle cable issue I discovered oil coming out of these hoses, it’s hard to tell if it’s all or one as they got dirty laying next to each other but I suspect there is one leaking oil that is attached to the breather vent port at the center of the carb bank where the air box connects to from above. Is this a Normal place to have oil come from? Is there a PCV valve or something there?

ISO grip? I’m gonna have to look into that. For now, my redneck engineering prevails. Zip tie and fluid film. IMG_0336.MOV -
Loose throttle / cable
Pasta Burner replied to Pasta Burner's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok found the problem the white plastic piece finally had enough apparently and the cable was just sitting inside the housing. (Put back in place for the pic.) According to this IPB looks like it’s part of the grip assembly item 19. Or is there an insert I can buy? https://www.youngpowersportslayton.com/oempartfinder#/Yamaha/XVZ13DT_-_1987/HANDLEBAR_CABLE/7f27add3-8aa1-4fc3-ac41-cc44b1eded4d/f86175b4-7082-4ed0-8c30-c8fb2fee8a8b/y -

@luvmy40 any better now? My wifi is being dumb. -
I took a video rather than trying to explain. I’m not sure when this started but I Definitely didn’t notice it this bad before this morning on my way to work. Something to note, a few weeks ago the cables on the right side (not sure which one as wasn’t watching it) caught the head of the cigarette lighter and ripped it apart during a parking lot maneuver. Question is, what part / parts should I be fixing or replacing? IMG_0336.MOV

There is something funky going with that boot for sure. It’ll be a carb off investigation, when I went to tighten the inner socket head screw it was a 4.5mm rather than 5mm like the rest. it performed much better today still some popping and hesitation above 6k but I think it just needs to be ridden hard, which is difficult in rush hour. By the time I got to work it had started a high idle 1700 and I notice the throttle has about a 1/4 freeplay before it engages. I don’t remember it being like that.
-
@cimmer what I was intending to show is that I had a vacuum leak on the right front carb, using some spray I located it was the intake boot, it still needs the be sealed a little better but I was able to tighten things down enough to get a reading. I was able to sync all four, I’ll report back once I button it up. on a side note, is there a recommendation for the carb drain hoses? Two of mine are missing/ cut way short. My gut says they don’t need to be anything special, considering they only see fuel once in a great while…I think.

I started to take her apart but life got in the way and then I lost motivation…even though the garage is my happy place. Maybe tomorrow.

@BlueSky @luvmy40 thanks. I guess just reading through it I was a bit confused, I’m sure it’ll make more sense once I get into it. If I get stuck I’ll be back with questions

Small update. What I don’t think I mentioned is that when I put the seafoam in when I got home the other day is I shook the tank up well and let it idle for 20 min or so to hopefully get it into the carbs while it sat. Rode her work today and I immediately noticed better idle from cold while I got my gear on, hardly any choke needed and stabilized well, once I got to the four lane she pulled till redline in first without hesitation then pulled hard till 7rpm in second and Immediately bogged down. Had to shift anyway and third was smooth but no road left to throttle it. Went in the close to home gate to get on base and she ran great all the way to my building. On the way home traffic was such a drag I couldn’t even near 5k in second on I15. But seems to be running better on seafoam alone, we’ll see what tomorrow brings. And my carb sync is in the mail so still excited to see what that reveals.

Ok so I’ve been seeing a lot of reference to shotgun cleaning and google and ye shall find…I call 7/8 BS on that. I’ve found one article which is fairly comprehensive yet still leaves me a little lost having minimal carb experience. I’ve found no videos either which I find odd for something that is supposedly a wonder process. What am I missing? Is this process illegal haha, why so vague? I even joined a V-Max site looking for more info. https://vmax.lvlhead.com/tips/shotgun.htm

@SpencerPJ so how does that trunk work? Looks like a trunk/saddlebag combo that opens toward the rear.

Beautiful bike congrats! I hear ya on the forward controls, I rode my buddies FXDL last week through the Rockies where he lives, I took me 3/4 of the day to get used to putting my feet forward from a stop. Once riding i was fine with it but still awkward in technical turns. If I can convince him to sell it to me I’ll be sure to get used to it though
