So how do you properly adjust the throttle cables? I put my new grips on and am having the high RPM issue. I don’t think it’s sticking at the grip because when I rotate it all the way forward it still doesn’t drop RPM. Occasionally if I let out the clutch some while holding the brake to bog the engine down it’ll stay at 1K but mostly just creeps back up to 3k. First ride with the new grips, dangerous and annoying. I read the service manual and that was no help.

Finally finished🤞 After receiving the replacement module and installing per the directions the same thing happened. I did a little more testing on my end figuring I’ll just make my own module if needed I discovered mating black to red from the module to the grips provided the correct wiring. (The new module also puts out almost double the voltage which is something the engineer mentioned when I spoke with him last week. Something about an updated one which I suppose addresses the lack of heat issue I mentioned in my initial post.). Test ride yet to come, but in the garage they feel nice.

Yes the actual button you push to crank the starter. On mine anyway, the headlight powers Off when the button is pushed and the engine cranks. Mine was just all gunked up with 30 years of nasty and quit doing what it was supposed to do. A little TLC and I’m back in business.

Sorry to see you go, I enjoyed our conversations in the chat room. Enjoy the next phase of life.

So update on this install. I tweaked grinding out the throttle side housing a little more and had to cut a notch in the clutch side housing for the wiring. After hours of bench testing before I buttoned it up I thought I had it figured out because the grips Just weren’t heating. Turns out I was wrong in thinking the mfg had bad directions. After even more troubleshooting I confirmed there must be a fault in the resistor module as it was the only thing getting hot and only getting .2VDC to the grip side elements. Contacted Avon and so far they’ve been a pleasure to work with. I get the feeling they are a smaller family business. Paid $35 for a replacement module which will be refunded when I turn in the defective one. I think after talking to the engineer he wants to confirm it’s faulty and why and to trend analysis on faults. Should be here Thursday in time for this weekends ride.

So who’s who? Someday I might meet y’all but until then it’s nice to have a face to a name.

different year and my odo is analog so that’s of no help but similar circumstances it was my starter switch.

Glad to see you back and report in on a successful trip.

What a pain it was getting that clutch grip off. Ended up pulling the handlebar off the bike and just worked brake clean (best solvent I had on hand) between the grip and bar working it in with a dental pick. Finally got it free. Air was a no go due to the glue being so strong. Time for a drink and some football.

You’ll be closer to the ground if you have short legs. I can’t speak to the rideability though. -
Throttle grip installed just so y’all can see what it looks like. Haven’t decided which side I’m going to mount the control yet.

I think there is just something messed up on my bike. Exactly what you describe is what I’ve been reading everywhere but loosening it actually tightens the cable. It’s sticking now anyway a little but I’m trying to button it up to maybe break in the new grips before I do more tweaking. that said…how does the clutch side grip come off? I’m assuming it’s glued to the handlebar whereas the replacement have set screws. I’m trying to not damage the grips I have in case I want to go back.

I worked on installing them last night, but hit a wall when closing up the switch housing and decided it was time to call it quits for the night. First off the switch housing horseshoe opening for the top of the housing is a different diameter than the bottom so I had to grind it open to fit the new throttle. Once I had it all dry fit on the bench I went to install on the bike and still needed some tweaking. The biggest problem is getting the throttle cables into cam. What’s the trick to loosening the throttle cables?

Loose throttle / cable

@luvmy40 where do you have the throttle boss positioned? The Avon grips I bought came with it attached but the stock location seems to be too low to be of any use. I’m thinking I should rotate it up so it’s pointing about 45 degrees. -
Thanks so much for the clarification! This is why I love being part of this club!

These just showed up. I think they’ll look nice and the heat is just a bonus if they work. For $65 it’s worth a shot.

Thanks! I happen to be quite skilled in crashing my RC plane, I know a few shops in the area. One of which is also my local gun shop and pellet smoker dealer. -
So I rarely ride two up with the wife, it’s usually the kid that comes with me if anyone. Yesterday we did a ride through the high Uintah Mtn and my goodness the off camber and uphill intersections kicked my ass. The problem…I have short legs 30” inseam. When I’m solo I teeter on my toes and am mostly comfortable with it even though I wish I didn’t have to. But add the responsibility of another life and putting more air in the rear to compensate for the extra weight it made for some hairy pull aways. I don’t really want to mess with suspension mods, so my research has lead me to people being happy with the seat mods from Rick Butler (Texas?). Seems like the members who have had their Gen 1 seats done by him are no longer active. By the way I already have a Corbin seat, not sure of its pedigree though. is this the right guy? https://m.facebook.com/pg/The-Butt-Butler-Motorcycle-Seat-Reconstruction-1239795552868655/about/ Any thoughts are appreciated and thanks for bearing with me as I’ve been flooding the forum with issues lately.

@skydoc_17 I think I’m going to take you up on this offer. You mentioned needle shim kit…procedure for removing and installing the needle was going to be my next question(haven’t looked at the manual yet, just waking up, if it’s in there just say so). But if your kit is different I’m sure you’ll have all the info I need. Also @saddlebum reminded me to ask another question about C or E clips that hold the linkage rods in place throughout the carb assembly. The diagrams don’t list it as even existing, I spent an hour at my Yamaha dealer on Saturday scouring their computers and parts room and came up with neither a number or a part that fit. I currently have a couple strategically placed alligator clips holding it together. FYI I didn’t loose the clips, they were missing from the get go. -

Lanbao Membrane Diaphragm Carburetor Vacuum Piston For Yamaha XVZ1300 Venture Royale 1986-1993 1FK-14940-00-00 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RSXP977/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_45YW9TFK0BCYADYWKEE8 I found this but can’t verify where it’s made yet. Ugh why can’t China just make quality. I’m guessing if it’s too good it isn’t worth the waste of time. is this a fair price from partzilla? https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/1FK-14940-09-00?gclid=Cj0KCQjw1dGJBhD4ARIsANb6Odkwm44VAhqt9nTDMc3WCYEIglFeFK4i-MOe6iIW-c7gBYRGqdvkTeMaArRvEALw_wcB this hobby is getting expensive, but if it’ll save on fuel it’ll be worth it. What’s a good source for the sliders? Does JBM have them and I didn’t find them yet? That’s a busy website on a phone screen 😳 -

Thanks for the info. Just got back from a 230 mile ride. Bike ran great other than poor fuel mileage still. The top end performance was there after I corrected the oil level. -
I think this is what is referred to as the carb slider. Black plastic tube with diaphragm on one end and needle on the other. Took them apart yesterday to do an inspection of the diaphragm and clean. Noticed both right side had cracks that almost looked like they were glued back together. Is this normal or should they be replaced?
