“Peeing” analogy is not accurate by any metric.

    This one is accurate:

Your shorts and trousers do not stop a fart from spreading at all. And yet a scent molecule is far far larger than a virus.

Its like trying to stop a mosquito with a chain link fence. Now THAT is real smart.

  2. UPDATE: Well, I’m sorry there’s no video or step by step on this one. It was truly a pain in the butt to run the wires properly, and I encountered a a few frustrations to say the least.  I did install it with a cut-off switch so I can go back to stock easily.

Ive been doing a number of projects back to back so the bike has been on the lift for almost a month (feeling riding withdrawals)!  So, finishing up the last of the projects installing a dual camera system. Should be done with that by 4 or 5pm and then it’s time to wash & wax.  Going riding to Lake Lure with a group tomorrow and looking forward to it!

I need t test that.  Since I really wasn't prepared for it to work so well after all the other issues I didn't know what to do if I could do anything.  Wasn't going to play with it while riding.

Please let us know what you find.

My wife has hit you up for info in the venture/Eluder owner Facebook page.

I’d be interested to know what up.

    Thanks

Yes I did.  I have the service manual & the after looking at it again I found the adjustment bolt. They are located under the front crowling. Don't need to remove anything. Thanks for all the input guys!

I’ve got mine tore apart quite a bit while running new wiring to various extra lights I’ve installed and doing waterproof plug connectors on them. Also installing a dual camera system.

  5. Hello fellow “Venturers”!  Well, while I like the performance of my SVTC I know that “Raider” engine in it has more to give.

There are some of you out there already like me who have drilled out the pipes and added the K&N air filter.  For my part, I felt a definite seat of the pants increase in performance and it has not hurt my gas mileage as long as I “stay out of it”.  That’s difficult though since I ride exclusively in SPORT mode except for in the rain.

Anyways, Magnum Tuning has a reasonable performance chip at $250 which has been designed and dyno’d on a stock SVTC and they guarantee 15% MORE HP, 15% MORE Torque and 22% FASTER throttle response.  All this without flashing the ECM and thus destroying the warranty. It works with the existing ECM program by causing it to adjust to parameters being fed to it (by the chip) and gives you the performance increase.

In other words the ECM is just operating as designed, and the unit can be switched off and it goes back to operating as before.
That being said, we know the weakest point of this motor is the flat tappet lifters. Because of that design, running a motor oil with at least 1500ppm ZDDP is essential. Mobil 1 V-Twin is 1700ppm and the only other higher is Redline Oil at 2200ppm but it’s pricey per qt.  I did find a ZDDP additive which only adds $10 to each oil change but puts the ZDDP protection levels at 3,000ppm.  I’ve ordered it and it should arrive by next Friday. I need to get the protection in BEFORE I increase the output.

Its been requested that I do an “installation” video when I perform this, so I’ll do my best to accommodate that.

    Looking forward to the results!

This topic was pulled on the other forum, poster got an email asking for it to be removed, moderator did so. Recommend copying and saving it somewhere.

I have asked poster what Yamaha is trying to hide, and waiting for his answer.

I saw that Eric and think that’s just self serving BS on his part. He goes and tells everyone about this and then is ok being silenced as long as HE GOT HIS.

What were they gonna do?? REMOVE his update if he didn’t delete his posts?

It just seems extremely self centered and cowardly on his part to not take a stand given how many people on various forums and pages have made know their problems and concerns.   Unbelievable!!

And just for posterity sake I’m posting HERE what he said he was instructed to do BY YAMAHA!!

Soooo, what did they do to your bike. Is it a secret? I no longer see the thread. Is there a secret handshake also, I need to know. image.gif.e6b23412f232f725cb69e9c11fe56401.gif

I'll answer you with only this...last night I received an email that I was asked to remove the thread. I will not mention by whom. I contacted a wonderful moderator who did just that. I won't talk any further about what was done to my bike OTHER than what you read here, in that while riding, my wife and I really enjoyed the RED (sunrise) in the year of 2021. The 'sunshine' on the bike is just WONDERFUL...every blemish has been erased. That's all I will say going on. If you remember any of that thread...put two and two together, and you will have a great view of my speaking of the 'sunshine' since getting home, and we both having our first ride in the sun....from the dealer's visit. Cheers! Basking now in the 'sunshine' and everything is just great now. What a FANTASTIC bike, my '2018' Yamaha Star Venture Trans Continental is, Kc61. Yep...my '2018' runs just GREAT! All the electronics...the engine...the whole enchilada!

Has anyone else thought that those black popouts on each side of the fairing would make great side marker location? They sit on the sides of fairing, just outside of the upper cubby holes.

Hey @Chuckles_18GT, I believe according to Yamaha videos concerning the development of the bike that they are a “wind tunnel test” addition. They’re  supposed to help channel some wind away from your hands.

That video was very helpful, thanks!

Still waiting on a quote from Clearview Shields. Called and left a voicemail and replied to their email but no response yet, hopefully I’ll hear something back tomorrow.

Hey @Dbarbee, please let me know what they quote you on that windshield. It sounds as if we are wanting the same size, and I never asked them for a quote.

    Thanks in advance!

Well, I tried an experiment this afternoon with the stock gps and it raised an interesting question.

There has been discussion on the difference between the analog speedometer and the digital one. There were questions on why the accuracy difference.

My thought was that the front wheel provided the speed indication for both analog and digital. So to prove this theory I did the following.

I put the but on a trailer, had some one tow me while I videoed the speedometer and GPS. In addition I had my Garmin Xumo Xt installed as well so we would have a base line.

As I was recording it I did find out that there was no speed indication neither analog nor digital which is what I was expecting. The shock was that the stock gps was not indicating the travel. It stayed on the starting point of when I began the test. I did record both in accessory and with the bike running to see if there was a difference. There was none.

I stopped and shut the bike off and to just check I started it back up to see if the stock gps would find the new location. Which it did.

I cannot explain why the stock gps did not show the travels. So that is the new question. The Garmin Xumo did show the travel.

So now I have to see if I can figure out why.  I do hope this answers some questions. Or it may just generate more, I know of at least one.

Hey @ecbaatz, there are some things that may not be powered up until the bike is running. I’m surprised to see you didn’t see if that made a difference.

I can't find the Star Venture listed on Clearview Shield's web site, has anyone bought one recently? I've seen posts from several members who've said they bought them so apparently they were available at one time.

Do they come in different sizes?

I'd like to install a slightly taller and wider windshield, is there a significant difference between the Show Chrome 20-611 windshield and the Clearview Shields? Show Chrome says theirs is 2.5" taller and 4" wider than stock.

Might not be listed but they do make them. I reached out to them directly and they said they can do whatever I want in size, including recurve top.

    I’d suggest calling them.

Recently, the tire industry has new guidelines on auto tire repairs. A patch is no longer the go to. Instead they say a "plug patch" is what needs to be done. Now whether that goes for motorcycle tires to IDK. The reasoning behind is to keep as mentioned "crap" out and not corrode the steel belts. But we are in a different construction with fabric belts. A plug is not acceptable in auto industry, but I like many have drove many a mile on plugged tires, same on a bike. But I prefer a patch for sure.

My understanding is that BOTH are the way to go. The hole is plugged and a patch over that on the inside.

Hope this is true.  I've been fighting with Yamaha Canada head office for 3 years and have dozens of emails and phone calls back and forth because of multiple failures and flaws in my 2018 SVTC software and Nav system.  I was told in 2019 that a software fix was coming (didn't happen), then promised in March 2020 that new hardware was coming, then told in March of 2021 that neither was coming and that no further updates were planned. Lots of empty promises and "sorry there's nothing we can do's" so I will cross my fingers on this one.

I feel ya @VentureDog. All of us 2018 owners have been on this same roller coaster.  IMHO, this is the ONLY way Yamaha can redeem itself. Many have abandoned Yamaha because Yamaha abandoned them. There are thousands more of us who are on the fence about our faith in Yamaha and their actions here could have massive repercussions.

We can only hope that our faith has not been misplaced.

Thanks all for the replies so far. I haven't made a decision yet, still weighing the pros and cons.

I would hope that the dealer installed navigation wouldn't have issues but I don't know how to confirm that either.

Well the first thing you can do @Dbarbeeia to make sure no matter which model you get that the dealer had registered and updated ALL software PRIOR to delivery.

Have seen too many stories of individuals taking delivery and due to dealership ignorance the new owners had problems due to something not being registered like the sirius xm or updated to the latest software revision.

So I can assume that the GPS issue was resolved on the 2020 models? Yamaha sells a GPS navigator kit to upgrade the non-TC Venture, is it safe to assume that it doesn't have the issue that the 2018 models had?

Wish I could answer that affirmatively @Dbarbeebut it would be pure speculation on my part as I’m not familiar with the 2020 and later models. All I can say is that the 2018 has Harmon Kardon whereas the 2020 and later I think went Garmin.  At any rate, this is welcome news for 2018 owners.

I will say that across a number of different forums I haven’t heard of any complaints from new owners.

right signal went out 2nd day of a 2 week trip. was told cant replace bulb- gotta replace whole unit. NONE available for several weeks!!!  any suggestions?  got rained out so sitting at home after 8 days on road. gotta get it fixed so we can finish our trip when it dries up!!!!1

Hey @eddiejoe, have you checked the actual plug connections yet? Also, I’m assuming your on an SVTC. If so, you can go into diagnostics and verify the turn signal switch is working properly. There’s a number of checks to do to verify that the light itself has failed. That is extremely uncommon.  I had broken my right side mirror and it took 7 weeks to get my new one! Just want to give you a heads up.

I can help guide you through the diagnostics if you’d like. PM me and I’ll shoot you my number.

It was just posted up by another member that Yamaha has a complete fix in process for the 2018 Nav/GPS issue. Whether that will be extended to second owners may or may not depend on whether it is sold through a dealership. I don't know if this is being considered a recall or not.

I can't speak to any other changes from 2018 to 2020.

Hey there @luvmy40, I believe given the nature of the known problem with the 2018 software it will most likely be a recall.

This is Awesome news.  I've only complained a little to the dealer because I didn't expect much.  I need to go in for the recall on the brake switch soon so I will be sure to bring it up.

Well @bpate4home I’ve complained enough to Yamaha over the time period that last time they actually hung up on me!

I wonder if they’ve got my number flagged? image.png.07b0a5d6f3a9717d52c72de90e28d9d4.png

"Hey Gar...about me calling today, Yamaha Canada, and then my dealer to verify...(I want this Yamaha B.S. FREE!!!!)"
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Story 'bout a man named, Jed"....

Well, Gar, I just got off the phone with both Yamaha Canada, AND, my selling dealer to 'double tap' the truth of following information:

1...This is FRONT PAGE NEWS!---- From Yamaha Canada (and I suppose in tandem with Yamaha U.S.A.)....we are EITHER getting for all 2018 year SVTC owners, AT NO COST TO THE OWNER....a complete MAJOR system-level and (possibly hardware module) re-do of the 2018 model year Yamaha Star Venture T.C.

Here's the 'skinny'....they HAVE the solution in house. Due to Covid 19 over the last two years, they have not had the in-house and Harmon-Kardon support they needed to finish the project, but are testing right now in their facilities in Japan. I asked if it was software or hardware (modules...the modules behind the right fairing cover...) or both. The Yamaha Rep could NOT divulge to me, as he was not authorized by the factory (Yamaha Japan) to give out that information, as because it was in test mode, something could still be added, deleted, reworked, recalled, and/or additional module modifications, or not, could happen. They are at that quality assurance and burn in stage.

But..he said, that YOU, AND ALL OTHER 2018 YAMAHA STAR VENTURE OWNERS ARE GOING TO NEED TO GO TO THE DEALER, FOR THIS UPDATE AND/OR MODIFICATION. Gar...that you have to go to your selling DEALER...highly suggests that it is not merely an ISO download, or that because of the total replacement, that the software is too huge, or...that it must be a dealer level install to guarantee that the owner will not, or was not responsible for BORKING his/her, her/his bike...with no way to return to running service, unless full module replacement. This will NOT be available as a download ISO file!!!

I then called the owner of my selling dealer...and he gave WAY more information, as they have also been notified, and in consultation with Yamaha Canada.

Here's what he JUST TOLD ME!:

"Joe...very happy to report to you, and I'm sorry that I had not called you two weeks ago...we have been swamped...but that aside, with apologies The GPS has been totally reworked, and fixed...they say, (Yamaha I assume the 'they' is...) you folks will love the new GPS, and other concerns have been also addressed. Also there might be added after year launch additional features." He alluded to, but could not say directly.

I asked him if it were true that you have to book an appointment with your dealer...for this is not-owner installed, and he said: "Yep...that is necessary as we were told only that it was going to be a large overhaul, and might include RE and RE of system parts and modules, therefore requiring the owners to book into their dealers. This can not be done at home, by the owner."

He told me, that he has repeatedly told them...that what was the current state of affairs with 2018 release year owners, his words to Yamaha( "is...total B.S.! They paid $32,000 dollars CDN, and you gave them a dime store software release. He said that why did they not just go with Garmin, instead of looking for the cheapest way out? That's what he said he told them repeatedly, and that he was caught in the middle between a rock and a hard place taking complaints...and not being able to remedy them for almost three years.

So, while my dealer still does not know whether it is to be only a software installation, or a software and hardware module installation on the 2018 SVTC, it will need to be done at your dealer and most dealers he talked with, agree that it is pretty much pointing to a not only software rewrite, but the modules on the computer board that the software will control/speak to... So Gar....it's taken a three year journey in the SVTC Ark...before we will settle down upon Mount Yamaha, but...it is coming probably within two months (my time suggestion) as it still is being burnt in by Yamaha Japan. This, my dealer said, is not WISH WARE...they have the 'solution' (code for software, hardware, or both) but it will turn our rides, into friggin' Grand Tour perfection...and when it lands...so will the climb of re-acquired resale retention equity.

I'm sure there will be a ton of YouTube 'after installs' stating that this is so much better, this has been fixed...'that' now makes the bike even a better touring platform, but I'll bet you one thing...that Yamaha is going (with the use of this update) going to try and recoup and repair the damage of their botched 2018 SVTC launch....and gain traction on Honda....and if they produce a perfectly working (as intended) SVTC...CB and all...it will be a sure slap across Honda chops for sure! Final thing, the dealer said that the rep told him they WORKED IN OTHER FEATURES as they could with a total rewrite. Dang! I think...if I were Yamaha, and had to to this...that I would make the Yamaha SVTC even MORE noted as non Harley, or Honda wannabe/clone. With a total rewrite..(for remember...if you add modules, and the software to run them...you can add ANYTHING to the SVTC...for being totally software driven, any feature (with supporting module) can be written in.... Gar....good times ahead....and I think there will be one chap...THAT WILL BE KICKING HIMSELF, THAT HE TRADED IN HIS SVTC FOR 'ANOTHER RIDE'.... In one of the songs made famous by the late, King of the Blues, Mr. B.B. King himself-----singing----->... "..it seems, you might have made your move, too soon!"....

No more...the empty check's in the mail, Gar...my dealer was told, it is no longer vaporware,...they 'have' the 'solution' for the 2018 SVTC model year...IN JAPAN...and are at the install and test stage....

A few more weeks of patience. I already told my dealer...that I want to be booked in SOONER, than later....before the 2018 re-do stampede happens....

You might want to contact your dealer...and see what's up with the above info...on your side of the border...

Yeeee Haw! (BTW, my wife had to come into the Den), to find out what I was hollering in happy 'naughty sound-bytes' over...and got excited herself, when hearing the news. She sure hopes that they got the Intercom/C.B. connection...DICSONNECTED.....and I sure hope so too. We always love to talk to the Knights of the long Mile..., when out during the night...to stay sharp, and enjoy the three-way conversation. We did that all the time on our 2000 Honda GL-1500 (which had O.E.M Citizen's Band Radio).

Joe (doing the Irish Happy Dance)...

Post Edit, Oh, BTW Gar, my dealer also told, me that they were advised by Yamaha Canada, to have me come in, and THEY would reprogram my FOB, as that (by his discussion with the Yamaha Service Rep, would be the solution for a 'wavering' FOB bike connection intermittent 'problem' before they will replace the FOB hardware itself. So that is getting done mid July....
