  1. I had a Willys Jeep in high school (Oh the memories) when I lived in AZ. I chased an overheating problem for a long time - new thermostat, water pump, oversized radiator, different coolants... The cure stumbled upon me when I rebuilt the carb. There was a vacuum leak between the carb and the manifold. The temp dropped by 40 degrees and never overheated again. Good luck, Gary
  2. I think we maybe got it. I attacked the pilot jets from the top via the PAJ#1 with a gas torch tip cleaner, carb cleaner, compressed air, and finally seafoam fed in with a syringe. It sure feels good for now. Thanks again for all the help! Gary:banana:
  3. The power is strong and steady at 1/4 throttle and up. It just stumbles at idle to 1/4 throttle. The idle screws are out to 4 turns ea. The choke needs to be slightly on until motor is thoroughly warm/hot. Ran carb cleaner and compressed air thru idle screw ports and air jets. Carb diaphragms look good and all piston valves appear to be reacting the same. Synchroed carbs. New plugs. Checked timing. Put timing light on each plug wire and all are firing. Cleaned and oiled air filter. Air box looks tight. Checked for vacuum leaks around intake areas with starting fluid. New Odyssey battery. Getting about 40 mpg. I'd like to try bigger idle jets, but I'm a little hesitant about pulling the carbs and upsetting some of the old rubber around there. Thanks for all the input/help. Gary
  4. Thanks Condor. That'll save alot of grief. Is there a chart that shows the diameter of the orifice in relation to the jet size. I'll probably drill them out and it'd be nice to have the bits ready. My brother in law is bringing his Goldwing down for the 1st time this weekend and he'll be pretty scrutinizing. I hope to have it idling smooth and also that he gets a good look at the tail lights when we're on the road. Gary
  5. Is there a way to access the pilot jets without removing the carbs? I'd like to try richening them up one notch. I was also going to raise the jet needles up and found that there were no adjustment grooves. Do you use washer type shims, or do you need different needles? Thanks, Gary
  6. Never done this:fingers-crossed-emo B4. Hope it works.
  7. I made a quick carb air screw tool by flattening the end of a pc. of 5/32" x 4" welding rod and bending it in the middle to 90 degrees so that now I can adjust the front carb screws without having to remove all of the blasted plastic. Gary:farmer:
  8. I seperated the tubes with steel discs that have 1/16" holes in them and that cured it. It did slow down the response time though. I took the bike on my 1st trip last weekend, about 350 miles. It sure rides nice. Thanks again, Gary

  9. Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info and pics of your carb synchronizer. I made 1 similar now, but I'm not sure if I'm using it right. The oil jumps, spatters, foams up, and exits (in all 4 tubes). My kids think that the smoke is pretty neat and are hoping that it is a permanent modification for the bike. One thing that is different with mine is that the bottom connecting hoses are 1/2". Should these be smaller? Do I need some type of restrictors somewhere?

    Thanks for your help,

    Gary '86 VR

  10. Maybe the Venoms aren't the best? I also live 2 miles off of the tar. Is there a road tire that's also safe on loose gravel? Thanks
  11. My '86 Royale came with a new Elite II rear tire. The front tire should be replaced and I'd like to switch to Venoms. Is it safe to run a Venom on the front and leave the new Elite II on the rear? Thanks, Gary
  12. Could you or someone show me how to find them? I did look, but I'm not too sharp with that kind of stuff. My youngest daughter mistakenly thinks that I know it all, but at 4 yrs old she has not yet discovered the truth. Thank You, Gary
  13. The inside of my oil filter cover is embossed "magnesium", thus the material question. Gary
  14. Yes, it is a heal - toe with floor boards. This isn't standard? Haven't had the bike long. Gary
  15. The shifter bracket portion (lower rear corner) on my 86 left side case broke off leaving the linkage dangling. Anyone know if these can be welded? Is it alum. or magnesium? Or is there a source to by this piece. Thanks, Gary
  16. I got My 86 VR going Sat. that I bought 2 wks ago. It had no clutch, no foot brake, and ran rough, so without a test drive I bought what I thought was a cozy, feature laden touring bike (which it is). After some maint. and minor tuning I was able to take it out for a ride. Holy smokes! These have the heart of a muscle bike. The next day my 20 yr old son & his girl came by with his 02 HD softtail - very shiny, loud, and impressive -, and he asks "Hey gramps, ya wanna go for a burn?" Yah, I spose, heh heh. It looked sort of like a comical mismatch - black leather with a shiny chrome rumbling Harley, and grandma & grandpa on their quiet, not yet polished luxamobile. We took alot of rural back roads and several times at various speeds he tried to show ol gramps his tail lights. But the 86 ate him like an snack, big time. I told him that maybe he should take up shuffle board. Gary
  17. Thanks for the info. I just bought the bike, so I'll probably ride it a while and then drill the holes so that I can have the satisfaction of a noticeable improvement. Gary
  18. 86 Venture Royale - It looks like the intake area in the air cleaner cover is about 1/4th the size of the area of the carb intakes. Is this an obvious restriction?
  19. Thank You! I'm picking the bike up tonight and your info was very helpful.
  20. I just bought a 1986 Venture and it has no pressure on the clutch lever - 0. Fluid reservor is full. Master cyl bad? How do I bleed the system? Thanks
