  1. I cant imagine all he must have seen during such a great long life. Condolences.
  2. It's working for me only because the install and use is now so much like windows (at least the distro I got) that getting it on the PC and getting it up and running is quite simple. Getting it massaged into something that will do as I want/need, that is a little bit of a project after being with windows since 3.11 coming from DOS 6.22. Also the online support for it has given detailed instruction for virtually everything I need to adjust. I'm in the process of this and making pi-holes, VPN and stuff on a stack of Pi cards and kits I just got. I'm frequently punching above my weight class with the Linux bones but I've gotten this far just based on internet support. I had no idea where even to start with the older Linux setups. I remember going from paper charting at work to charting with a effen laptop. I hated it, it slowed down my med pass dramatically. The only advantage was it was suddenly possible to read what doctors and other nurses enter into the chart/orders. Still, as it appears in your case, they needed to polish the system instead of going straight from an idea to actual use. Sorry you had to grit through that enormous frustration. Those IT people that talk using industry lingo knowing full well that your not following, it's them pulling a hybrid power and dick move. I'm going to relent and do a bunch of reading and make some pi projects to try and grasp code and bash, and whatever else there is that I have very little understanding of. As I've been following tutorials and workarounds I've been picking stuff up. I still feel like a complete Linux noob. It sounds like we are irritated by some of the same things haha. MS gets credit for being well refined, but each iteration is more invasive to privacy and takes more control away from it's users. Windows should be free with all the adverts and "premium" services they bundle in, that are impossible to get rid of. Cortana was the last straw for me, I knew then I needed something better. My last win10 laptop, an HP, was so loaded and clad with junk that could not be uninstalled or turned off that I stopped using it until the day I sort linux enough to go that way. I think that day has finally come. My first boot into Linux Mint was a very happy moment. It feels naked without all the junk, but has also become well refined and highly intuitive to windows users, at least this distro. I've had it with MS trying to define both my computing and web surfing experiences in their favor. Besides I've always been a gamer at heart and MS was the best OS to use for that. Linux seems to be offering solutions for gamers now too, I saw the "Steam Machine" advertised and then realized that times have changed enough that even I can get to it. Linux even 10 years ago was well outside my technical grasp. I think the difficult setups and need for a technical background scared many of us away. Now with Linux being so much more user friendly and even feasible for games with some setup I'm in. My first real test drive of mint has let me know two things for sure, 1. It's so fast and light, it's come such a long way that even I can use it. it's subtle differences can be learned 2. It does get some setup to make it my own, but the community support is stellar and this trend of instructional walk-throughs not only gets me where I need to be but also imparts some knowledge as I go. I'm a long ways from your level of knowledge. I think the real milestones are that one can install and use it with very little knowledge, it's no longer outside the grasp of non-technical users, thanks in part to a brilliant database and community online and refinements in the install and setup process.
  3. I've stepped into the light, no longer under the damp murky shadow of MS (sort of). I tried out Linux Mint, supposed to be pretty intuitive for windows users. I had to make a few adjustments to get it to dual boot with win10, and mount my FLAC library to be accessible in Linux. Thankfully there is plenty of documentation online and most of it is pretty easy to read and understand, even for a less techy guy like me. I run a GTX1080 so I had to get and adjust those drivers to get my sound and vid just as I like, although it worked right out of the box. Learning code and bash commands honestly seems grueling to me, I'm learning that slowly through messing with Pi boards, and I've only just begun. I needed none of that to get it up and working, and very little of it afterwards. The cool thing is you can put Linux on a bootable thumb drive and try it out without even installing it. I would have done this years ago, I've hated MS with the burning passion of a thousand suns since win95. Linux was always behind in supporting modern games. I play games about as much as normal people watch TV, so kind of a lot. Now Steam supports Linux, to what degree I'm going to find out. I've read that Uplay works too with a couple of adjustments. I plan to keep win10 to boot to just in case. I've never done this before only because of lack of support for games, now that is not such a problem. I've only just started sorting Linux out and I'm fast falling in love with it. I shoudl not say sorted, it's easier to tweak than Windows by a fair margin it really illuminates how bloated and heavy Windows is. I'm going to highly recommend anyone that's just a bit down on MS to look into this. I've also dramatically cut all that network traffic to MS and Google, which is all blocked anyway. I like being in control again.
  4. Congrats! You got a blonde. On the leaking air up front I would first check the hoses that deliver the air to the top of the forks. Mine was leaking there but I no longer use air in the front so I may have some spare hoses, I installed Progressive fork springs and they work great with no air pressure. If your fork springs have never been replaced they are likely pretty knackered out, those Progressive replacements are about $100 off ebay and do wonders for the handling if in fact yours are shot. If you have any weeping fork seals make sure to use OEM seals only. These bikes are heavy, and heavily outdated but I kid you not I push mine around through the curves here in the Black Hills, once everything is sorted out they handle better than they have any right to at their age and weight. Check/adjust steering head bearings too while your prepping for first ride. Not everyone has been pleased with the factory brakes, but there are some well documented, cost-effective solutions for brakes too. Mine is wearing R6 brake calipers front and rear with EBC pads with brakes de-linked (yea, they are linked, sorry bout that). Right off this forum you can get brake de-linking kit which includes braided lines. I thought i'd save the money, but if I had it to do over I'd use the kit. Many parts are still available, they made a whole lot of these things, plus lots of folks here, myself included, probably have totes of extra stuff. There is a sight, used to be boats.net, but I think it changed, many many OEM parts for these still available outside the dealer network so I hope someone else comes along with the link. While your riding pay attention to 2nd gear, there were a few years where that could be an issue. Mine does idle okay, albeit low idle is set to about 1100rpm. ended up pulling my carb rack, replacing diaphragms and setting float levels to the lowest end of the range, I live at 4000' and ride mostly up higher. I figure with all the ethanol in the fuel (to be avoided as much as possible with carb equipped vehicles) many times these will have to be removed and the corn squeezings manually scraped and blown out. Best not to let it sit for any real length of time with ethanol in the tank and carbs. The chokes are actually just fuel enrichening circuits, if you pop off the faux tank (one screw below the gas filler and wiggle forward until it pops out of the grommet up front). Loosen the boots and lift the air box out, you will then have access to the choke linkage and be able to see if they are all working the same. A good carb synchronization should be done, I do it at least once a season just to keep it happy. Many folks here use the Morgan Carbtune, I got one and love it. Sounds like your already doing the shotgun. When replacing carb parts, OEM Yamaha or K&L (Japanese aftermarket). The attractively priced un/misbranded online stuff is best avoided, just like fork seals. Some of the symptoms your listing may be helped by a carb sync. If your doing your own wrenching then I would get one of those Morgans carbtunes. I got mine on Ebay but even if you have to order one from the UK they are shipped and delivered pretty quickly. Welcome!!
  5. One way I keep from getting too worked up is I do not watch news, I end up yelling at the TV. I have to read my news, usually on Reuters as it has less partisan bias than a few of the other main sources. Watching mainstream news is like listening to a nest of parasitic insects gnawing through my blood brain barrier from inside my ear. Reading news is far less aggravating, at least for me. YMMV. Inner peace might still be a little out of my grasp, but I like the idea of unfinished projects, thanks to you I might now have to finish all this baseboard. Yup, thanks for that! At least your unfinished projects were bottled haha.
  6. Man, you guys have had trouble with them too. At least ya got one of them put where thieves belong. So I sent them a note, after a few tries someone came right out and said to block sponsored listings, use the "easylist" filter on any of the more common adblockers. I've been using easylist (among others) for years and it only just stopped working. After he said it then it suddenly started working again, I see no sponsored listings at all now. Odd, because I made no changes, just verified that I had that filter list as I have for years, those lists are auto-updated. But so far the end result is no sponsored junk showing up anywhere in any searches at the moment. Win. On the sellers suddenly being able to spam buyers out of the blue, I followed all that I could find on the net and nothing worked, so I got ebay cust svc to walk me through it on the phone. A couple obscure settings later that should be sorted out too. It is difficult to find by design I'm quite sure. Untested as of yet but I think the silence means it's working. Preventing spam should be quite a bit more intuitive than this, but if it works then it still counts as a solution. I bought something from Ebay this morning and went to pay with Paypal, and it stopped working, just showing a screen full of promotions but no way to pay the seller. I shut off all my extensions and even paused the pi-hole for a moment, still no go. I ended up just paying the seller with my VISA cc, I probably am done with Paypal, it's just not worth the hassle every time I want to use it. If Ebay stays in check for now on the burning issues I'll leave my account open and use it when I must. I do have to give them credit for having workarounds, flaming hoops, but still the end result should be the solved issue. Next time there is an issue I'll probably just walk away from it, but for now I think the issues are corrected. I'm still keen on alternatives to be sure!
  7. I've been on Ebay for about a decade and I've watched it degrade significantly. To be quick the issues I've had/having are; 1. Sponsored listings, hard to block effectively and intrusive as hell. My extensions keep the top of the list clear but the search results are still polluted with sponsored listings regardless of what I do. This with no better workaround will be a deal-breaker for me. I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but my extensions have just become less effective at blocking it, even with an added filter. 2. Sellers selling Chinese items are allowed to be very elusive about it, no way to filter out sellers from China without them turning up again while scrolling down, and more importantly no way to filter out Chinese/Unbranded items, or quickly block sellers that engage in elusive practices while pedaling Chinese items. I know about using searches to exclude but I want them blocked all the time, regardless of what I'm doing on Ebay. Just today I found unsolicited offers from sellers just because I had one of their items on my watchlist. Somehow sellers were able to contact me with offers just for that. Obviously this is not okay and is also a deal-breaker for me. 3. Banners and ads galore, it's a real cluster_f to look at and navigate. It looks like a Google sponsored dumpster fire of adverts, analytics and flash. I've used uMatrix to individually block elements, lots and lots of them so it's pretty clean but sometimes acts up. When I pause matrix all the hot garbage comes rolling right back onto my screen causing intractable profanity. I can block out 99% of it, but not feeling like I should have to go to such lengths just to make it as clean as it should already be. Not a deal-breaker because I can still counter it for the most part. I've sent Ebay another inquiry about these issues in hopes that I may get a straight answer this time. Not holding my breath. Most likely I'll be saying goodbye to Ebay and Paypal for good, especially in the absence of a proper easy seller block list. I'm not so sure I'm the first one to tire of Ebay, so wondering if I'm missing any workarounds for the issues. More importantly, what other online sights do you all like, either for buying or selling. I regularly use CL and sell stuff on wife's FB. Recently I've been buying a few Raspberry Pis and learning Linux/creating infinitely helpful devices like KODI and Pi-Hole (pi-hole is an absolute must have item). Ebay has plenty of used/new offerings but they come with the massive drawbacks listed above. Good prices can still be had on Ebay but it's become far too much hassle to avoid dodgy sellers and Chinese items. I've ruled out Alibaba for obvious reasons, and Amazon for many of the same reasons, besides Amazon prices on quality items seem no better than anywhere else on the net. Further, Amazon is like Google, you cant use the services without the heinous privacy violations, tracking and adserving. Amazon has joined Google on my network-wide blacklist. It would be nice to find something like Ebay was back in the day. I'm going to give Newegg another throw, maybe try some others if anyone has any suggestions. Internet searches are tough here, they return a lot of biased and incomplete info. I'm currently still on a neutered win10 machine but likely going to a Linux OS, so if a solution is only workable for Linux I would still like to know about it. Thanks folks! It's good to be back, who'd a thunk a couple days would feel like such a long time.
  8. Not bad, this will take some getting used too, it said it was still down this morning so I logged in anyway and got here. Time to explore.
  9. I realize yours is a Gen2, my experience with fuel smell is with my Gen1 89 Venture Royale, and my 99 Gen1 Vmax. Both had that fuel smell, especially the Max. It (Vmax) was jetted and tuned quite rich, as they seem to be from the factory, but someone put a DJ jet kit in and it was grossly rich. No leaks were found but it sure smelled strong. Sometimes walking by in the parking lot or a while after it sat in the garage it was a strong smell. I had to jet way way down and I adjusted the floats to the leanest end of the acceptable range. Fuel smell gone, and significant power gains noted. I live at 4000' so I intended to go a touch lean, and I was rewarded. I thought for it too smell that strong there must be a leak, but non was ever found. I never smell raw fuel with this bike anymore. My 89 Venture had the same issue but not nearly as bad, had the whiff of fuel sometimes when walking by, or when stopping somewhere and restarting. I searched for external leaks and found nothing. Still inspired by my success on the VMX (thanks to some really cool gents on the Vmax forum for guidance) I pulled the Venture carb rack to inspect and re-tune. I used the same guide to adjust the carb floats to the leanest edge of the acceptable range, (also replaced bowl and jet block gaskets with K&L Japan aftermarket, and some diaphragms out of the UK). Smell gone, but I was still getting low 30s for MPG, but the smell was gone. I used some needle valve shims from Skydoc which solved the MPG issue (guessing the emulsion tubes are just worn with 75k on the clock) and the fuel smell was still absent. Never smelled it again and never found an external leak on either machine. I did not link the guide I used (factory pro web site for VMX) because while the carbs are similar I have never had a Gen2 and I'm not aware of any Gen2 specific variables that may set it apart from my experience on Gen1 machines. I also use a Morgan Carbtune and obsessively keep then in sync, but that was true before and after remedying the fuel smell, which on both bikes also presented with poor MPG and reduced performance. I also checked that the choke lever was activating all 4 enrichment circuits open and closed together, I guess it can happen where a "choke" can slip out of the linkage and stay stationary while the others work, never happened to me but I've read about that happening on various V4 Yammys. I know my stuff is older but I hope this might give you some ideas going forward. There is a method to check float levels with no disassembly but I cant find the link and not sure if that carries over too Gen2 machines, although I don't see why it wouldn't. Last thing, then I'll zip it haha. Yamaha OEM and K&L are both Japanese quality, any other brands or ebay specials and you run the risk of ending up with Chinese parts in your Japanese carbs. I got my K&L stuff off ebay and got a good price, but supply seems to be hit/miss there. There are huge quantities of very inexpensive off brand stuff, to be avoided for sure. I hope you get it sorted:biker:.
  10. Gotta say puc, your Venture is the very coolest one I have ever seen anywhere.
  11. Depending on what popped I may have some extra stuff. I have an 85 VMX12 (Vmax) engine sitting in my shed for parts. It's also sans 2nd gear I believe.
  12. It looks like you know how to use SD! Awesome with the plains as far as the eye can see, it recharges my batteries so I sure understand that. I'm glad still a lot of folks know how to do Sturgis/SD, I see more trailers and RVs than ever before, I know it's not anything like it was inside Sturgis, but the hills and plains are still all that they were when I got here. No words. There is something about this place that gets under one's skin and it wont let go. Every time I move away I end up back.
  13. Lots of great pics! It does look like a great summer indeed.
  14. A great looking bike, congrats! I like the tan seat with lighter colors, but with black and black seat it looks right. Also you can not mistake this bike for anything else, it has it's own distinctive look. I see they spread the jugs out a little to 49 deg, that's gotta be a palpable difference too. Tell us, where shall you take this mile-eater first?
  15. Getting T boned full on by a deer on your bike would be like getting hit by sack of redi-mix launched from a cannon. Those little bastards are lanky but pretty densely packed and really fast. They can cave in a car door and keep right on going. I lost count of all the cars I've lost to deer, but happily never a bike. Glad you kept the correct side up and got some good excitement. Good times!
  16. See Patch, I think your pretty badass and I rarely disagree:beer: but... I cant help but notice that so many leaders are not too overwhelmed to swiftly to double down on the same divisive opportunistic behaviors that dominate gov/leaders in the best of times. We shan't fail to use a perfectly good global crisis as cover, no sir. No doubt it's overwhelming for those at increased risk of infection, and those facing financial ruin. It's just not overwhelming enough to prompt those up high to start doing the right things. I move that we simply consider the source of this farcical legislation and enjoy a good laugh.
  17. He was one of the many here I was hoping too meet one day. Sad news Condolences to his family and all here who knew him.
  18. I knew the NAPA Gold filters were WIX (excellent), but was unaware that the standard NAPA filters are also WIX. I'll be looking to stock up too. Thanks for that heads up!
  19. I believe it said that gasoline powered vehicles may not be sold new in CA after 2035... So even if you go out of state and buy one, can you bring it back to CA and license it, I'm not clear on that. What I do have complete faith in is that whichever answer makes the least sense, that is the one that will be chosen. If it doesn't work, CA will throw more money and resources at it until it still doesn't work, and becomes another exorbitant expense that CA taxpayers will be responsible for, indefinitely. We'll know we're doing it right when passports are needed to cross the CA/USA border. What I see happening is that the next we hear of this will be it's repeal in a few years, or legal proceedings against CA by the auto industry. I know I sound cynical (I am for sure) but this has brought me more amusement than anything else.
  20. That's too bad, this one is nicely done. Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure it will be fine after a little learning curve.
  21. Why does anyone still live in CA? I guess if this legislation actually stays put (doubtful) we can just add buying a petrol powered auto to the very long list of things that Californians continually move back into the states to enjoy, or avoid.
  22. I would direct anyone to consider the state of his state before assuming he has solutions for anything. Didn't this guy ironically nearly chase a guy out of his state that is brilliantly adept at designing and building electric cars? I'm not sure how his career ever exceeded the life-span of a common household ****fly. We're laughing, as we often do when he makes headlines. I'm guessing our CA located counterparts don't find much humor in it since they are on the hook for this guys counterproductive nonsense. By 2036 dont we expect to see at least 20% of road-going autos as stand alone electric/solar/plug in anyway, I mean if one had to venture a guess?
  23. No trouble at all, I've been going through the storage sheds trying to make space and it was right in my path. Like I said, it's not like new but it is perfectly serviceable and on it's on it's way USPS.
  24. Some years here it's the same, everything is brown by the end of July and fall colors fail to impress, unless your along the creek, in which case it's still amazing. This year we stayed green all year and being outside is priceless, the wildlife and the colors. Hopefully you will still get a display, there is always next year. I'm cashing in this year but it is hit/miss. I'm coming with pics tomorrow, I had no camera today and sadly missed some insane photo opportunities, but tomorrow I'll be armed with wifeys phone in hopes to capture what I saw today.
  25. I've removed it from the engine, it came right out with no fight. It's serviceable but I can see where someone used an incorrect screwdriver to remove it before. They didn't destroy it but it shows the attempt. Pic soon.
