That's exactly what I saw at first glance. Upon closer inspection, it's obviously just perfect alignment with the darker shaded area of the tree line in the background. One of those eerie photographic coincidences.

idle and sync issues?
luvmy40 replied to luvmy40's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
We had a brand new compression tester come at Auto Zone on our lone a tool program so I borrowed it. It gave exactly the same results as my HF tester. 180-190psi I ordered an endoscope today to take a look at the pistons and valves. I should have it Friday. -
Read End Interchangability

I was under the impression that the V Max rear end was a direct swap. Or, that with a special tool the guts can be changed out to retain the Venture pumpkin. I'm sure someone who has done this chime in soon. -
1989 Gas MPG
luvmy40 replied to uhfradarwill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wasn't getting any preignition running 87 octane but it did sound like a reasonable tactic to run a higher octane gasoline for reference. I had just filled up with 87 yesterday, so I added 3oz. of Lucas' octane booster today. I really don't know how much of a boost the Lucas is supposed to give but they claim "3 times more than any other octane booster." -
Wrap a piece of 4-6oz. leather around the weight and use a pipe wrench.

1989 Gas MPG
luvmy40 replied to uhfradarwill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, my needles are shimmed with Skydoc's thinner shims. I have no idea how many tuns my pilot mix screws are turned out. I tuned to clean burn at 1000 rpm(on the dash tach)with the ColorTune. I will go to a higher octane next tank to see if it has any effect. As of now the bike is running great though I do need to either let it warm with no enrichment for about a minute or open the enricher just barely for 30 seconds or so on a cold start before she'll jump out of the hole. She'll start right up with out enrichment but just won't pull under load for a minute or so. -

I've seen a few boast 40-42 Mpg. I've had one tank that hit 38 Mpg. I average 35 Mpg with a very similar riding profile to yours except I'm 5' 8" and 180lb. I don't see much variance in fuel economy whether I ride like it's a Gixxer or a Harley. I do see a decrease in economy when I'm loaded and two up. -
This a good quality fuse box?

I'm still curious as to what these vac lines are for and if they are original. My '83 standard only had one vac line from the boost sensor to the No.2 carb body and the four larger lines from the heads to the YICS chamber, now removed and capped. No Tees in any of them. The only Tee is the one in the breather hose that connects to the air box. Is this a Royale with cruise control? If so, are the CCs vacuum operated?

Harley Davidson announces new models: Possibly a liquid cooled V4?
luvmy40 replied to luvmy40's topic in Watering Hole
I just watched a youtube vid from Blockhead with a couple of the HD "Interns". They didn't have a lot to add but did verify that the liquid cooled V Twin engine in the new models is a completely new design and not the V Rod engine. They also stated that, while not given any concrete or exact numbers, the prices would be from "entry level" to "premium" on the various packages for each new model. -
So, HD announced some new models today. A 1250cc, 60 deg. liquid cooled V Twin "adventurer" KTM style ATC called the Pan America. A 975cc, liquid cooled V Twin, naked street fighter and a scramble/flat tacker with the same Liquid cooled 60 deg. V Twin. Along with a few electric cycles, including the Live Wire. One YouTube commentator(angry muskrat or wild hedgehog, or something) voiced the thought that maybe HD would now bring out something with a V4, liquid cooled engine in one of those models as they have a patent for the engine already. How bizarre would it be if the 2018 Venture is an air cooled V Twin and HD puts out a liquid cooled V 4 sport bike in 2020?

The Beast is happiest around 4k but will cruise at 2k and accelerate smoothly if not rapidly to 3k or so and then she screams. I found that cruising at 5k is not a problem and acceleration from there is instantaneous. One of these days I'm going to pick up a V Max and see what this power plant is truly capable of. ETA: BTW, my fuel economy does not seem to vary much with different riding styles. Loaded and two up makes a drastic difference.

Found my next project bike! 1990 Honda Transalp

This was my first thought; If you need lighted controls, get off the gold wing and ride your Venture! All kidding aside. It would be fairly easy to add a small LED aux lamp to the switch cluster on each bar but back lighting would be a challenge. I haven't seen any kind of after market controls for the Gen 1 bikes. But the Gen 2s were around a lot longer. There may be such a thing for them.

This may or may not be related to cimmer's problem. Another forum I frequent is having major problems with the Firefox browser. It displays the forum in a windows explorer type bullet point tree format with few graphics and no navigational tools. It displays and operates normally on Chrome and Brave browsers.

Letf side saddle bag won't open!
luvmy40 replied to luvmy40's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks! It was a bit of a fight to get it open and I was sure I was going to break something, but it finally popped. It's all cleaned, lubed and working properly again. -

I've tied squeezing, shifting the cover right and left, nothing helps. I'll check out prairiehammer's linked thread. -
People who have never used paypal may not realize that you do not need a paypal account to make a payment through paypal. This sentence reminds me o a Monty Python skit.

luvmy40 replied to luvmy40's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There are a couple bungee cords but nothing else inside. The lock cylinder doesn't feel tight or jammed. It turns freely from lock to set and then just stops short of unlocking. -
Vacuum Tube on carburetor ?
luvmy40 replied to Tiresmoking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The '83 TCI is unique. If the Engine and carbs are '83 but the TCI is '84 the boost should go to the intake boot and the vac port on the No. 2 carb body should probably be capped off. -
Vacuum Tube on carburetor ?
luvmy40 replied to Tiresmoking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do you have the '83 or '84 TCI? The boost needs to be connected to the No. 2 carb vac port with the '83 TCI. I do believe it needs to be on the intake manifold/boot on all other years. Don't take my word for it. There will be others here who know for sure. -
Vacuum Tube on carburetor ?
luvmy40 replied to Tiresmoking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's where the vacuum line for boost sensor connects on the '83. Is the '84 boost supposed to be there as well? I have no idea if it is supposed to be used, capped or if it should not be there on the '84. Any chance a PO put '83 carbs on? -
Out of the blue today my left bag won't unlock. The key only turns 1/8 past "Set" and it refuses to rotate any further. The key woks on all other accessory locks and has never been an issue before. I have three keys and they all wok everywhere but the left bag lock. Any ideas on how to get this open?

It was two days ago, but; I finally washed The Beast. My worst fear was not realized. None of my repaired bits of plastic disintegrated she didn't start leaking oil from every gasket! It did highlight all the worn clear coat and minor scuffs and scratches. All the repair rivets are nice and shiny now as well. BTW, I was caught in the rain yesterday, so the old adage holds true.
