I do the same time to time buying large quantities of nuts, bolts, etc. because I either find a great price or think I use more than I actually do. I use what I need at the time then often can't find then when I need them again. Not sure if it's my crummy filing system or just a part of having way to much stuff and not enough garage. Since this always seems to happen when I need an item "right now" I have to make a parts run to get the job done and its not until I go to put all the tools and the extra parts I just bought away I find the big bag of stuff I needed. Maybe I need to get a bigger shop area so I can organize stuff better but I'm afraid I'll just start collecting even more stuff so that may not be a good option either. I'm slowing starting to get better organized by picking up some parts bins to put small stuff in but as you can see the work bench is now a collection point for much of the stuff I need to file.

I try to do a long ride or two every year. In 2016 will be heading north in July for Kruisn the Kootenays event then from there??? Would like to keep going and see more of Canada and maybe get to Victoria Island then head down the pacific coast for a bit. I may head east to the international as well.

Glad to know it wasn't a stroke and that you'll get over this fairly quickly Larry. Also glad to hear you are able to ride the tires off that bike, hopefully many sets! Life can change in an instant and we never know what might hidden around the next bend. God provides us with so many great things to see in this world but never enough time for us to see them all. Get out there and ride like the wind and see as many as you can.

2015 riding season, what did you do for milage this year?
Zzyzx replied to Brake Pad's topic in Watering Hole
Not nearly enough this year. Rode right at 7100 miles on the trip to the VR International and Sturgis plus another 3500 +/- around this area for somewhere around 10.5K. -
Eck, Sorry to see this type of thing happen but glad to know everyone is Okay and still going to make it home for Christmas. A car can be replaced. Have a Great Christmas and try to make the best of the situation.

Crude prices are way down. Why hasn't engine oil dropped accordingly?
Zzyzx replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Watering Hole
Gas prices jumped.10 cents overnight. WHY????? Oh Yea, I forgot, its the California good weather convenience screw the public while having the crappiest roads in the U.S. tax. And what about the prices of asphalt roofing materials. Its now cheaper to move then replace a roof. -
An elderly man in Oklahoma calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day son, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are getting a divorce...; 45 years of marriage... and that much misery is enough!" "Dad, what are you talking about?" the son yells. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old dad explained. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Hong Kong and tell her!". Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this." She calls her elderly father immediately, and screams at him, "You are not getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, you hear me?" she yelled as she hung up the phone. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay", he says, "it's all set. They're both coming for Christmas and paying their own air-fare."

The best Christmas gift I ever received was when our first grandson was born. January 2, 1999. My mother, who at the time, was ailing pass away 2 weeks later but not before she got to see her first great grandchild. It was a strange time for us with everything going on but like most things everything worked out and we now have 5 grandkids, 4boys and 1 girl. I did thou get one really great present that didn't involve grandkids. Back in early 2003 we were transferred to the Atlanta Georgia area for business. I was fortunate to be able to build a great team of people that worked hard and, we all played just as hard as we worked, well, sometimes harder. We all became great friends and are still to this day. We were notified in November 2009 we were going to be transferred back to California sometime around mid July of 2010 so for Christmas my wife and my team went all in and got me one of the best gifts I could have ever imagined. Had always wanted to do this and I have to say to anyone asking the question whether or not...YES, I would diffidently do it again, and again. Enjoy, I did!!!

Great advice George. The forks have been upgraded to an 86 model with progressive springs and the calipers were replaced with a pair of rebuilt R-1's. The rear appears to be in good shape and after making the repairs on the pro-valve seems to work fine but, I will be changing pads and anything else needed so it is safe. Thanks!

If you want this on 1st Gen Tech Talk I can put a step-by-step doc together and add a few pointer arrows to some of the pictures. I'll start working on the doc later today either way just in case someone else needs this fix. Do all 1st Gen's use this brake proportioning system?

Rear brake mystery solved!!! Took the rear master cylinder off the 83 this morning and removed the portioning valve. Took the end cap off and removed the internal parts that could be removed, Found that the two union bolts, one for the banjo that goes to the rear caliper hose and the other for the valve assembly, were both blocked solid with what looked like the junk from the bad reservoir hose that deteriorated from inside out. Most of the internal parts of the valve, spring, cap and valve tip, also have this buildup of goop. Everything was so blocked up the fluid could not get into the rear brake line. Cleaned all the metal portioning valve parts out in acetone and emptied the master of all old fluid then blew the old fluid out the brake lines. Bleed the system a couple of times and all is good now, everything seems to be working like it should. Will know more once I get the bike together enough to test ride it. I've attached a few pictures of what I found. Thanks for the assist on this Scott, Carl and Dan.

Okay, I guess tomorrow I will remove the line from valve to caliper and see if it is the issue. If it is clear I will take the master assembly off and see if I can clean the valve. Will update as to how it goes. Thanks Puc and Carl.

Hey Cowpuc, I had already removed the banjo completely from the caliper to see if there was anything blocking the in the caliper and got nothing thru the line

I'm working on a 1983 VR I picked up a few weeks back and need some advise on the rear braking system. The bike sat for a while and the rear brake fluid reservoir was 99% dry as the hose reservoir had a hole in it. I replaced the hose, filled the reservoir with fluid and started bleeding the lines. Started with the left front and got lots of air out of it then and was surprised to get a solid pedal. Started working on bleeding the rear but could not get anything out of it. I got the solid brake pedal after bleeding the front but could not get any air or fluid from the rear. Here is the question. It is possible the rear valve prop is just clogged? If so is there any way take the portioning valve apart to clean out the entire valve or should I start looking for a replacement? Thanks for any help with this one.

Below is the link to find what I think you are looking for at motorcycle superstores web sight. You may find one cheaper on eBay or Amazon. Don't know if they have the plug and play harness that's required. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/49862/i/signal-dynamics-diamond-star-plug-and-play-headlight-module

Way Cool KIC!!! Good looking ride. We all have a little monkey on our backs, either riding or working on motorcycles.
