  1. My newly acquired 89 VR starts instantly when cold with no choke. Seems to me that the carbs would have to be set way too rich for this to happen. Is this normal or should I adjust the pilot screws? Thanks

  3. It cost too much! I'm with Time Warner and I can't wait for them to complete their merger with Comcast so they will have almost a monopoly and they can give us an even better deal!!!
  4. I think Progressive and Geico are owned by Warren Buffet, the Oracle of Omaha's company. I have been with Nationwide for my cars for a while and every time I check around they are the least expensive. When I bought the Kawasaki I insured it with Foremost and last week I checked with Nationwide for the 85 Kawasaki and my newly purchased 89 Venture and they were about 45% higher than Foremost. Who knows how they calculate their policies.
  5. Yeah, Wix makes the NAPA filters. I saw Wix on the box.
  6. Yeah, I think I would buy mine somewhere else.
  7. Very nice looking Bike! And you know its history.
  8. I think it has something to do with the efficiency of the engine. The V4 is a high rpm engine and the cams that allow it to rev high have more valve overlap and the more overlap the less efficient the engine is at low rpm. My old 69 SS396 Chevelle with a Crane Fireball cam would burn your eyes with the raw gas coming out the exhaust if you were close to the rear of that car when it idled. Extremely inefficient at idle. I suspect the V4 is most efficient higher up in the rpm ranges and also in order for the bike to go a certain speed, the engine has to produce the same amount of hp no matter what gear you are in. Oh, and I had a 1965 Chevelle with a 300hp 327 that had the 350hp 327 cam and I never saw a 289 that could come even close!! :rotf: Maybe those special solid lifter versions that only had a 90 day factory warranty? I believer they were also rated 289hp. Ahh, the good ole days! We survived!
  9. Thanks. I don't see the need to spend the money for the K&N so I will be buying the less expensive filters. If the NAPA PS4933 filter fits, I'll probably stick with that. I've heard so many members of the F150 forum bad mouth Fram filters, I'm a little afraid of them. I think it had to do with the drain-back valve or something. I don't think I've ever had a problem with Fram filters.
  10. I searched the web sites of Advance, Autozone, Napa, Motorcycle Superstore and Bike Bandit looking for an OE oil filter. Bike Bandit listed a K&N for $15.99. Motorcycle Superstore listed an Emgo for $5.99 and a Hiflo for $6.99. After searching the forums, I think I found the correct numbers for Fram, the CH6002, and NAPA, the PS4933. So I called my local Napa and got them to order one for me for $6.99. This is for my newly acquired 89 VR. If these aren't the correct numbers, please correct me. Thanks
  11. You are a wealth of information! Thanks Very Much!
  12. Sounds like great fun! Post some photos of your bike when you get a chance. Congrats on your pool shooting skills! My cell phone gps is more accurate than my garmin. However, the garmin works from the satellites and the cell phones work from towers. If you are out of range of the towers, you have no gps! Something to keep in mind. I don't have my new to me 89VR registered yet. But I would like to see your route and if possible I will ride out to meet you along the way. Welcome to the site.
  13. Where I live, there are several gas stations that sell alcohol free premium and at least one that I know of that sells alcohol free regular and premium. It does cost more.
  14. Thanks for the reply. Could you post a photo of the jack adapters? Did you buy them or make them yourself? If you bought them, where did you buy? Thanks again!
  15. I looked under my 89VR today and it looked like if I used a jack like yours it would contact the exhaust pipes which may not be a good idea. Does it lift the bike touching just the frame or engine or does it indeed come into contact with the exhaust pipes in the front? Thanks! I really like that jack. And I just got a 25% off Harbor Freight coupon. And I really like your Venture! It has a lot of character. I wish it could talk! Thanks
  16. I use Gumout for high mileage engines. It has the same ingredient in it the Techron uses. And it works great also.
  17. Wow! That's a great looking 91 model! How many miles does it have on the odometer?
  18. I checked the tires and both are Dunlop Elite IIIs with almost all of the tread left. They are both date stamped 2010 so I lucked out there. 2010 is when the previous owner bought it. I won't have to buy tires! He also mentioned taking it in for service. He took it to the Honda Dealer and they said they wouldn't work on a bike that old, but when they saw it they made an exception because of the condition. The neutral switch worked today so maybe I was just having difficulty finding first gear yesterday. I thought I left it in first but my son noticed the indicator said 2nd. Probably needs some lube somewhere. It's only been from the trailer to the garage so far. I have not ridden it. My wife's comment on the bike was, "Why did you buy such an old bike?" I should have told her it was a 2009. She would never have known the difference! Ha!
  19. I feel the same way actually. I'm so afraid I will drop it! I probably should have bought a beater for half the money!
  20. Thanks for the information. Not sure if I will put it back on.
  21. It's hard to believe but it actually looks better in person than the photos show.
  22. I haven't checked the tire manufacture dates yet but the guy I bought it from rode it and it runs good. He said he had owned it for 4 yrs. The front tire is a Dunlop Elite III. I haven't looked at the rear yet. The air compressor works well. The ignition switch needed a little WD40 to work smoothly. The only thing I have found that doesn't work so far is the neutral switch. The kick stand has to be up to start it and the neutral light doesn't light up. Oh, and the Venture V that is supposed to be on the front fender is in the trunk. It appears to have been glued on. Is that correct? The fender does not have any holes in it and the paint is perfect. It will be next week before I can get it registered due to the notary filling out the title incorrectly. So, I have to make a 5 hr round trip to the Raleigh area again next week to re-sign the title. I need an owners manual and a shop manual for it. I saw the Shop manual CDs or DVDs on ebay for cheap. Does anyone know if they are comprehensive?

  24. I'm going to have to become a paying member now. I just bought a 1989 Venture that looks like a new bike. It has 5,914 miles on it. I'll post photos tomorrow because I just got home with it. It's maroon and black. I'm excited!
