  1. Sorry brother,, was never much of a movie guy.. I will definitely have to check that out!!!
  2. Now come on Duey,,, you KNEW this was gonna get a out of me didn't cha:missingtooth: Duey's a ,, Duey's a ,, Duey's Tell ya what brother,,, I been REALLY enjoying the winter (excluding the VIRUS stuff).. You been following the Indian Challenger stuff taking place too?? Just CRAZY!! So, 2018,, Mom Yam gets a good solid from all her past touring riders saying "we want air cooled, push rod, V-Twin big block torque,, neutured to under 5250 R's so no hp,, 70 hp is fine" in the new one soo she builds it... HD, the mother of all air cooled, push rod V-Twin tourers had attempted a valiant shot at water cooling in a fine OHC engine in their high torque/high HP V-Rod and it fell flat on its face in sales so one can only wonder if Mom Yam wasn't getting reinforcement on her findings of the polling she did on those in the Yamaha touring know from that HD experience.. Of course,, you know cause you were here on VR,, all of us V-4 riders were wanting the big block 1700cc V-4 and were standing inline waiting for Mom Yam to actually turn the touring world upside down like she promised with a Beemer stomping 175 HP/160 ft/pds torque scoot = did we need it? nooo but did we want it,, ohhhhh yea LOL.. Now, 2 years after the unveiling of the new Yam,,, those left over SVTC's and Eluders are still sitting on showroom floors bringing back some not to distant memories of the V-Rods sitting in HD shops = what on earth... Sales are/have been flat line, last I checked a new SVTC could be had for under 17 large and an Eluder for 14. Along comes Polaris.. They see a gap and go for it.. They build a water cooled, OHC V-Twin that dumps out 120 HP,, all about performance,,,, they name it the Challenger.. They stuff a fixed fairing on it,, sort of looks like a Road Glide.. Seems those things are growing feet like centipedes at the dealerships that can get em.. I truly think if Mom Yam would take a 3rd Gen,, pull the Twin,, open up the fake lowers and make those upper loovers functional with Rads behind them, drop in a 1700cc V-max mtr tuned a little for torque,,maybe.. Shaft drive it... Offer both the Twin and the V-4... Thinking that would be gold and bold.. THANKS DUEY,,,OL' PUC NEEDED THAT!!
  3. By the way Khett,,
  4. Seeing that pic of your build brought back some interesting memories Khett... Is that a piece of tire missing on top of the rear? I only ask cause I had a Metzler come apart on me one time out in California that looked just like that.. Any chance that is a Metz with a section missing out of it?? I like where your going with this one! I have done many Choppers back in my building days, never used a 1st Gen as a baseline though,, I did do a few HD's but my mainstay was early (SOHC) Honda 750's.. I only altered 1 original Honda frame and used aftermarkets (Santee - Amen) after that 1st one cause they were single back boned, straight, cheap and plentiful (could actually buy a raked and ready to build from frame for under 2 bills).. Anyway,, the early Honda 750's used a triple back boned frame that created the necessity for a wider than normal single frame gap between the tank halfs.. Those Honda tanks,, as I remember, were normal narrow only at the very front and then opened up real wide all the way to the rear of the tank.. I always used Peanut tanks or fabbed up a Coffin tank in my builds and disgarded/sold the OEM's.. I have no actual demensions to share with you but it may be worth seeing if you can find an old Honda CB750 frame and/or tank to take a peek at and see if it would fit.. FYI,, those Honda tanks were wide = ye be warned Puc
  5. Could be a cultural thing but around here a Bobber always represented a minimalist/stripped bike but no cutting of the neck.. A neck cut and altered rake to accomendate an extended set of forks was always referred to as a Chopper meaning the rake was not stock.. Of course,, it's either/or and neither here nor there as cultures to have a tendency to change things.. For instance,, I got a parking ticket in NYC one time and got out of paying because the no parking signs in NYC say this on them = "No Standing".. I simply explained that in Michigan our no parking signs say "No Parking" on them and that "No Standing" would translate into "No Parking Your Car Vertically" which was not the case..
  6. LOVE YOU TOO MY TEXAS HERO BROTHER!!! Thanks you guys,, defenitly some great memories of days gone by.. Last year I had Tweeksis at a local event where a couple thousand bikes (not kidding,, our "Spring Run" is legendary) where a group of HD riders was gathered around Tweeks admiring her collection of earned stickers/signatures/tie wraps holding her together and the +1 million mile Blonde side covers that had been on all 6 of our 1st Gens.. One of the viewers made mention that he knew I was no longer able to tour and, admiring Tweeksis offered me a grand for her as she sat.. I chuckled and said no,,, that would be like selling my best friend or the collection of family pictures sitting above my TV set... I said nahhhh,,,, thinking old Tweeks will eventually end up retired and up on a stand as a memory bike.. Few more Social Distancing pics in honor of Tweeks and her kind? Let er buck
  7. Never did the Army thing Sky (THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE BROTHER),, I am more of the cowardly biker type who, if the skies are iffy will scout out an abandoned fuel station to camp under,, or even a tree in a cemetery or even a water tower or a vacant picnic table in a county park or a,,,,,,,,,
  8. ,,, could very well have been Ben!! The "bus" is located in Skull Valley Utah,, just a couple mile of desert dirt riding behind the gas station,, the only gas station there.. Would definitely be a perfect place to produce a scarey movie:missingtooth:
  9. Actually,,, with a hunk of foam rubber inside the $20 Menards tent them rocks didnt sleep that badly.
  10. Arf, Arf ,,, You are more than welcome Duey!! The pleasure was truly Tips, Tweeks and mine,,,, literally
  11. Please let Gary know Tip and I are praying for him Roller!! Also Prayers Up for you and your family as you folks surround him with love! Thinking fishing on that river sounds like just the therapy he needs brother!!
  12. Hearing that brother, amen!! That is exactly why I summons you on this thread = I learned soooo much from chatting with you about exactly that!! Now seeing this "tool",, plugging in the numbers and seeing exactly what can/could be done made me about the memories of chatting with you about it!! Still got a very low immune system from all the health issues,, definitely laying low and not looking for a fight.. My daughter and son-in-law who both work at a Hospital in California had a 2 week trip to Michigan planned and have now canceled everything to protect Tip and I,, kind of sad cause I really miss em... Oh well,, can still Skype em .. How are you folks? Hope you are getting some Miata time my brother!!
  13. ,, hokey spamoky Spence,, you nailed it!! Just checked https://ammoseek.com/ and you are spot on.. Prices have doubled!!
  14. Right there with ya Sky!! Must be a geezer thing or something... I been sending notes to the POTUS to PLEASE consider WW2 like price freezing and rationing cards before he releases the +TRILLION dollars of money with hopes of curtailing gouging and hoarding as much as possible... I am one of those "high riskers" cause of health issues and still fear the economy terror more than the virus stuff,,, guess I am more concerned with my childrens children quality of life than that of my own potential of pushing up daisies.. Sick eay... Prayers Up
  15. This may or may not help:
  16. I always carried a cheapy little 5 dollar 12v pump from Harbor Freight and a plug kit from the Dollar Store on my travels.. I even used them both a couple times on my own scoots and was able to assist others numerous times with them too (come to think about it - I think @videoarizona ended up with one of my tire plugs in his RSV).. I liked the Harbor Freight pump because they work awesome and are cheap enough that if someone I am helping needs one in an emergency I can just give it to em... Or if a car runs over it in a parking lot its just a matter of grabbing a new one for a few bucks..
  17. Got a buddy who got himself a new air cooled, push rod V-Twin,,,, thats when all the fun started.. Actually, he started the when he went and announced that with just a little tweaking (turning off his electronic speed limiter), the torque of his new scoot would definitely carry him past the top speed of my beat up, run down old 83 Venture and, being twice the cubic inch, quite possibly do in my Yamaha R1's top speed too .. A friendly but lively discussion took place concerning the matter... It got long winded with me trying to explain why HP carrying in the upper R's wayy above the 5250 line where his Big Twin would explode combined with that higher R ability being able to take some major gearing advantages due to the wider range of usable power to his and him trying to explain why Torque is the only thing that matters,,, you know,, usual back and forth ... Back and forth and back and forth we went,,, what a REFRESHING blast to be back to :Im not listening toing bikes again... Farrr away from all this corona nonsense.. After we came to our usual dead end street, I tossed my hand written gear ratio math notes aside and did some internet searching to see if I could find some engineering support for my point of view:missingtooth:.. He did the same ... What I found is going to make the eyes of good friends of mine like Venturous Randy (you didn't think I forgot about all our discussions about gearing did you brother) flat out bleed with joy!! Talk about a POWERFUL tool in the right hands!! THOUGHT ALL YOU LOP EARED GEAR HEADS MIGHT ENJOY THIS = https://www.blocklayer.com/rpm-gear-bikes.aspx
  18. Sure Patch,, gladly try to clarify.. I was speaking of the little Honda XR's and the 10mm oil gallery bolt you remove to check the oil pump status at each oil change or whenever the bike might be inverted,,,, this little bolt is located right above the spark plug = easily seen in the first pic in this ad I just pulled up on ebay = https://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-82-Honda-XR100-XR-100-Motorcycle-Body-Motor-Cylinder-Head-Valves-Guard/164046041794?hash=item2631e7f2c2:g:SfAAAOSwP2ddRFkt new I never owned or worked on one of the new Ventures that the OP asked about but my point in all that is/was that in pretty much most of the dry sump bikes (which I am almost sure the new Venture is being air cooled = gets the oil out of the engine to cool it) there is always a similar oil pump test bleed for the same purpose as on the unit constructed little XR Honda and I personally would not use a similar bleeder for an oil pressure line... That help?
  19. Jf, according to the club's manual you will be using T-2 for the front pot... Here is where I am reading from = start at page 158 = https://www.venturerider.org/manuals/1986-1993%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Service%20Manual.pdf.. There is a fair amount of checking cam sprockets and stuff here too,,, just normal OHC cam stuff.. Also beware of rotational protocol on the crank,, I believe its counter clockwise only but its all in there... I know on ANY of the scoots I went thru in the past when it involved valve timing, I ALWAYS double checked my alignment marks and the like but I also ALWAYS, with plugs pulled and rotating in the right direction bias,, stuck a breaker bar on the crank and slowly rotated her thru a couple times to make sure I wasnt about to bend a valve = dont take much of a bump on a piston... I know and am sure you know all that but thought I would toss it out there... Best of the best brother,, get er done Puc
  20. Dry sump systems on air cooled engines like the one that, I am almost positive, the SVTC encorporates normally have oil gallery lugs in them that you bleed from any time you do an oil change to make sure the oil pump is functioning and not air locked. Usually its a screw (or two) that you loosen to bleed from.. Many wet sump scoots do too = look above the spark plug on an xr80/x100 = 10mm bolt in the head right above the plug is for exactly that.. Some people have used these bleed points in oil gallerys for oil pressure gauge apps on unit bikes but I never really found them useful/consistent.. The bleed points on a non-unit/pre-unit type of scoot that incorporates an oil pressure sending unit (I am POSITIVE the SVTC has one as this is one thing those reps out at Sturgis did let me check on) like even all big twin HD's after the F heads had should ONLY be used with each oil change to check the pump,,, the best place I found (and this is where I would look on the SVTC if I had one and was going to ride that hot puppy out in the desert) to "T" in a pressure gauge line is where ever the sending unit is located... This is customarily on the high/hot side of either the oil bag or the oil cooler if the bike has one...
  21. Ya know Ben,,,, they say that lots of really great things have been discovered by "Serindippity".... Think I read somewhere that even sticky notes were created by such means... Now ya got me wondering if my geezer brain is crossed wired and that should have been "smeltndippity" and not serindippity as your Candied Smelt actually sounds scrumptous!! P.S. = last time Tip left me alone, like your bride did to you, thru "Steakensmokidy" I discovered that WD works pretty good at getting cooked on steak splatter removed from the surface of the broiler in the oven and may also work for sugared smelt splatterings on the stove top... If you try that though,, its not a bad idea to let your wife know that you used it so she can professionally clean the surfaces and your next meal dont have a funny,,,, WD40 taste to it that you discover by serindippity..
  22. ,,,, WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,,, ANOTHER AMAZING MOTORCYCLE RELATED REVIEW BY MY BROTHER AND WRITING CHAMP OF CHAMPS = VENTUREFAR:thumbsup::thumbsup:!!!! Headed there now my friend to review your review !!!!!!!
  23. Yep,, times have changed... Use to be that grease monkeys depended on a full set of gauges to keep an eye on things.. Then times went to idiot lights (really,, what check engine lite used to be called) and nowadays it seems like even idiot lights are of no concern,,, much more worry about whether or not your scoot has blue teeth... Of course,, being the guru he is,, MiCarl is spot on IMHO... On the other hand Lawman,, before switching over to water cooled scoots for my desert riding needs, I spent a fair amount of time soaking up the GLOREOUS sun out there aboard air cooled scoots and ALWAYS monitored engine oil temps with a thermometer on the oil cap of the oil bag. I used em on my HD's and SOHC 750 Honda Chops back then and they worked AWESOME as those bikes were all "dry sump",, which I believe your scoot is.. I also did run one on a couple unit metric Yam 650's too that worked well but not as good, IMHO, as my dry sump scoots.. Still nice to monitor oil temps in some way though if riding air cooled in that region back then.. ,,,, perhaps oil blends have changed enough thru the years that oil turning into water by touring Death Valley in the summer is no longer a problem:missingtooth: I also used to plumb in an oil pressure gauge on my dry sumps.. Even my 1942 HD WLA had an oil light as did my later shovels,, I was one of those greasy little monkeys that never trusted those lights,,, I LOVED gauges..
  24. A long long time ago,,, in a galaxy far far away,,,,,, back when motorcycling was all about something different, the kind of read you found here Sky was actually common place... I remember once while picking my way across the salt flats to see what was on the other side of all that salt I bumped into a group of guys out on the "ice" on beat up old bikes who easily could have been related to these icons!! Thanks brother!!
