What type of Antifreeze to use

What type / brand of antifreeze would you all recommend for an 05 RSV?

One labeled as 'suitable for all engines' and 'silicone free'. This indicates the product is safe for aluminum cooling system componants, and there are no abrasives (silicone) to wear out the pump impeller (if plastic). Be sure to change it out every couple years.

Wait !!! IT'S NOT "SILICONE" that you want to avoid it's SILICA which is used as an abrasive cooling system cleaner. In a car's system it will do no harm, but , with the type of pump we have in the V4 it WILL WEAR THE PUMP OUT You want to look for SILICA (SILICATE) FREE coolant.

I stand corrected......... silicate vs. silicone ..........BIG DIFF. Silicate wears out pump impellers. Shoulda had 2nd cup o joe B4 responding....

I thought I would look up the MSDS for the stuff I have at house. I just changed coolant in the wifes Durango. It is the auto zone stuff full strength. Has 2 different glycols and a dipotasoum phosphate listed. To lazy to go out to garage and look at jug rite now.

I did the antifreeze change and ask the same questions. There is a good write up about doing the total antifreeze change somewhere here in tech library. Maybe you are not doing a change ? But here is the links to help you.

I have had a couple of discussions also with fellow riders about adding water weter, ICE and the like. For those of us in the south we could almost get away with just running that without anti-freeze.

Will the jug actually say "silica" on it? Or is it disguised as one of them 15 letter words.

It will, should say either Silica or Silicate. If it does not say Silicate free don't use it in the bike. There are several name brands that are suitable. Water wetter is a good additive but i'm not so sure about using it alone.

I have not found any that say Silica free, but the ingredient lists do not have Silica listed.

Alternately, check with Honda (automobile) dealerships.

Me thinks I need to check mine... I just changed mine out a few hundred miles ago.. Sure hope I got lucky and bought silica free...

Using water alone is not a good idea.

 

1st) Antifreeze helps stop cooling system corrosion water will not.

2nd) Antifreeze not only protects from freezing but it also raises the boiling point of water helping to prevent the cooling system from boiling over in hot climates

2rd) Last when using water either alone or mixed with antifreeze use distilled, deionized or demineralized water. Regular water will leave mineral deposits that in time will clog up the cooling system.

I wouldnt run straight water either. Of any kind, distilled or other wise. What I meant is with the WW or ICE they have the lubricants alegedly in them for the water pump.

Also just checked the jug of Autozone antifreeze I have. No silacats listed. 2 types of glycol, water and a "propriatary ingrediant" njdst or something like that. Bottle says OK for alum engines.

I have 3 different types of silicate free coolant. Prestone is one of them, I'll look tomorrow at what they are.
