Going to Vegas for the very 1st time

My wife and I are flying to Vegas for a week august 23 to the 29th(i think). I am more of a sightseer than a gambler or relaxer, so If anyone can toss up some hot tips or advice that would be great. Since we are Flying down I was thinking of looking into renting a motorcycle for a day or two, and go on one of them cycle tours, so any hand me down knowledge or tips in this area would be great too.

The desert may be too hot to ride.

We went thru Vegas last August early. When we left the Hotel at 1130, it was 114°F!! I thought I was going to die by the time we made it to Kingman, AZ. I had bad chest pains and was ready to drop. I can't imagine that our boys are over seas in full gear in that temperature. NEVER again for me.

If I ever do Vegas in the Summer again, the only thing I would rent would be a cage with a good Air Conditioner!!

That being said, if you do go out, the Dam is a must. Especially if they are going to close it to vehicles. Take the tour while you are there.

Ok, while not your typical sight-seeing, this is really fun.

 

There's a french restaurant at the Paris Casino/hotel that you can sit outside, just above the sidewalk. It's across from the Bellagio, so you can watch that water show too.

 

But more fun, is watching the constant parade of unusual people trotting to and fro. Something about Vegas, women just love to dress, um what's the word, slutty.

 

At the Mandalay Bay they have a shark tank and a huge wave pool with sand.

 

Just touring the casinos, shops and restaurants is a blast, as they are frigging amazing.

A few of my favorites:

New York New York, has cobblestone streets and simulates the various burroughs of NY, without the trash and muggers.

The Venetian has gondola rides that go through and out of the hotel, also just a gorgeous hotel.

The Luxor is simply a trip, huge egyptian statues, crazy "inclometers", elevators that go up at an angle.

Treasure Island as a free pirate show nightly that you can see from the sidewalk/bridge.

Mirage has a volcano that erupts nightly, kinda cool, close to Treasure Island.

Caesars Palace is worth a walk through too, the shops like Cartier and others are just ridiculous.

There's a HD shop right on the strip that's pretty nice too.

 

Bring your camera, you'll see some amazing cars and possibly a few celebrities.

Do all of the 'theme' casinos. Luxor, NY..NY, Bellagio, Excalibur, MGM, etc. They are all amazing.

Unlike the other members giving you good advice, I can't give you any first hand experience on riding there but if it is not too hot, I know there are several places that rent out Wings, HD's, BMW's etc. If you do ride, another place to consider (it amazed me) was SW Utah - Zion or Bryce. I think Dogman camped in Zion on his trip.

Doreen and I were there a couple of years ago. We took in the Tournement of Kings at the Excaliber. Kinghts of the Round Table kind of thing. The actors are in a big arena and have sword fights and even joust on horseback! This is a dinner show and you eat as they did back then, no utensils. You get a huge cornish game hen, soup in a mug, and more. You then cheer for the knight that represents the section you are seated in. We got to cheer the Black Knight. What a blast.

 

The best thing though, as others have said, was the people watching. Just a great time. I wouldn't mind going again for more than three days this time.

I love the desert on my bike.. just not in the hell they call summer! Bev and I ride the desert every spring or fall. I'd rent a car to see the sights in August. Actually, if you have never been to Vegas you will probably not get thru all the sights on the strip in a weeks time and you can walk or ride the tram to all of thoses.

The wife and I have done Vegas a few times, usually around the SEMA convention that I go to.

 

here is how we have fun. Pick the shows you want to see and get tickets in advance on-line. Then go to the big hitters for shopping and fun, I love Caesars Palace, they have a great mall.

 

Unless you are a particular fan of Wayne Newton, stay away from h is show. I am a fan, but the last time I saw him he could barely sing and the show was poor. we enjoyed the cirque du soleil, they have several types, the nudie show we stayed away from, but others might like it.

 

Here is a tip: Get married again! the wife and I decided to do that the last time we went. Everywhere we went for two days we told people we were going to get married again and we got all sorts of free stuff. Free desert at one restaurant, a discount at another shop, and so on. But we DID get married again. Took a cab to the Little White Wedding Chapel (the only one to go to) and were just going to go drive through, but they said they had nothing going on inside, so they made us a deal. We paid the taxi, went in and they married us inside. We did it cheap (they hoped we would buy flowers/ring/elvis preacher etc), but we took the basic package which is a basic preacher, music from a boom box, and no witnesses. No flowers, no ring, but they honored their promise to return us to our hotel (or location of our choosing) in the super stretch chapel limo. What a hoot!

 

Also, don't rent a car unless you are going sight seeing out of town, if staying in the town, taxi it. You will probably save money, and not have to worry about parking.

 

I agree with others, not much to see around vegas on a bike, save the motorcycle rental for a beautiful area.

 

One other thing we did that we enjoyed, was rent a pontoon boat and go out on the lake for a few hours. Get one with a grill, buy some food, and cook out on the lake. that was fun.

It is amazing to see those hotels. Make sure to do Freemont street for the light show at night. We toured Bryce,Zion,Monument Valley,Valley of Fire and Red Rock and Grand Canyon.

Fremont street at night for sure, if you like motorsports at all there are several ride along deals at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Do not under any circumstances let anyone talk you into riding any of the torture rides on top of the Stratosphere! The swings are especially terrifying and have been known to make grown men scream like a little girl! But I definately would suggest that you do go to the top of the tower at night for the view of the city!

How about Laughlin? Wife and I are going in Oct on some cheap deal we got thru Harrah`s...wife thinks it will be boring compared to Vegas, but I like laid back..anything worth while doing there or just feeding slot machines and drinking Maker`s on the rocks?
