I am having charging issues yes on my 2008 Venture. I have checked the stator at the connector next to fuel filter no shorts, started and checked for AC output and good and increased with higher RPM reconnected connector than checked connector and rectifier and same AC output so I know all wiring is good for stator to rectifier. Did the check on the rectifier forward and reverse and all seems ok, then I checked the 12V side of the connector with engine not running and I have 12v. (confused). This all started with a weak battery that I took out and had checked and it was failing so I purchased new battery and all good to go. Went to dealer for annual state inspection was great, left there and went for about 50 miles all good, went home parked outside my garage and later went to put bike in garage battery would not start the bike. I purchased a new rectifier that I will install but I still feel that the 12v at the rectifier connector is not correct and should only be there when key is in the on position. Question, do I need to look at the on/off switch for something? or am I missing something else.

put in a high out put stator, new regulator, new regulator only lasted one day n it blew the main fuse by the battery, didn't make it one day. i think it totally fried the new regulator!
-
Stators always put out full production, it's the voltage regulator/rectifier that controls the flow.

You can always change it out in the back yard of the air bnb at 1:00 a.m. right? 🤣🤣🤣

I get that a high output stator can create more heat, but is that still true if I'm not putting any additional load on it? It seems to me that you'll only get more heat when you create more of a load. Looking at a "Ricks" 40a for $179. Keeping in mind that I may never even need it; just don't want to get stuck somewhere.

I am pretty sure Gary sold Tweety Bird and Sylvester, not sure if he ever finished Sylvester or not, he was riding a Goldwing the last I talked with him, you may find him over on the GL Forum, but he never did post to often.
-
Yes. He went by Dingy and has name is Gary Dingus. Haven’t heard from him in years.

I will assume you are referring to your 2008 RSV. On your first question, there should no voltage on the rectifier of a motorcycle with the ignition off. Which makes sense to me and you are correct. There are members here that are subject matter experts on the RSV electrical system and they should chime in soon. Explain to us what seems to be your problem.
-
Should there be power at rectifier with the ignition off? I am trying to track down my charging system. I’ve done all the tests for the stator and the rectifier have a fully charged battery and I read about there should not be power at the rectifier until the key has been turned on. I don’t know that that would make any difference, but something has got me baffled. I’m really leaning towards a new rectifier. Would love to brainstorm with anyone who can help.

When I 1st joined there was a guy on this forum, Tweety, with a bright yellow 1st gen that was hopped up with v-max parts. If I remember the engine fit just fine but it was a mater of the air box (vboost?) from the vmax that was hard to get resolved.

Did mine in August of 2020, had it planned for a few years but life kept getting in the way.... Covid shut-downs and nothing much to do so 2 buddies of mine figured lets go. Left the south side of Lake Michigan at the IL/IN boarder and headed up into Michigan, up and over into Green Bay, WI, pushed out to Madison WI then back south into IL. I don't wear a vest, but I wanted to nice certificate to hang up in my office. Everyone asked why, or that sounds like torture... but hey, bucket list item checked off.
-
Thats a hell of start to get back on after your shoulder surgery! I'm sending it in not for the patch but I would like to hang the certification in my office. But I agree, it'll probably be one and done. 700-800 mile days are no problem. I dont ride much over 70mph on my old Venture, so that's a full day of riding anyway. I like to stop and see things, smell the roses, get off and walk, and have a nice big lunch
-
Thank ya! It's something I can cross off my list, though I'm really not a fan of riding at dark, so it'll probably be a one-and-done!
-
Congratulations. I did one in 2019, started and ended at a gas station 8 miles from home so 16 miles farther than the GPS showed. Never did send in the paperwork since the patch didn’t interest me since I don’t wear a vest. I was recovering from shoulder surgery and bored out of my mind not working so as soon as the therapist said I could ride I really rode. Probably the first and last time, I have done some 850 mile days since then.
-
I've never done anything like that. Truly impressive. Congrats!

I will agree on avoiding high-output stators. I got like 5k miles on mine. I was then frustrated and bought a 30 dollar one from Amazon and got like 20k or more miles out of it. Now I'm running a Rick's stator. 10-15k miles on it so far and working good. We'll see how long it lasts.
-
I’ve got 90k miles on the OEM and counting. If it fries I figure one more OEM will last the rest of my life, small investment for that many miles.
-
So how long did it last? what if any addition load do you have that draws from the battery. (Extra lights, upgraded audio, heated clothing.) I realize that aftermarket in this case is much, much cheaper and OEM is crazy high price but are these aftermarkets absolutely junk but they seem to sell them every day. I am looking at a new stator - gasket - and Rectifier and dealer quote is $595.44 including tax. Don't think i will go that route so looking at aftermarket even if it lasts a few years.
