  1. Ken suffered a major heartattack last night...he was sent to Winnipeg where he then suffered a stroke. He passed tonight at 5pm. His kind gentle spirit will be remembered. He was devoted to educating young aboriginals in their culture and always had time for us who wanted to learn about it. He and his wife were raising their grandchild and he is a classmate of my little Courtney. We will miss you Ken......
  2. The '01 Tour Deluxe has tiny engine guards, and I've had a heck of a time trying to find highway pegs that will work. Any recommendations?

    Best time to visit?

I'm planning next year's vacation, and my wife wants to go to NS & PEI. when is the best time to go? Best places to stay? Best roads?Any and all input is great!
  4. My first time on this site and it's for assistance. My cruise control lights all three and then ON but will not engage nor light any longer. Checked fuses just in case another circut but OK. Assume problem in throtle or associated switches. Anyone got a heads up on this and or a diagraham to share for dissassembly. Hate to take to dealer and wait for repair, parts, etc. My number one therapy is my ride time or just knowing "she's" sitting in my heated garage waiting for me to take her out. Thanksgiving is tomorrow and after two days of heavy rain I've got four days of 65 + with sunshine to put lots of "going nowhere miles" on with my buds...
  5. I am trying to find lighting options for my 06 RSTD and I was thinking of lighting up the back turn signals like I did with my 03 Vstar. Last time, I just bought a set of front signals and pulled the harness out, but this time I thought I might buy these. http://www.customdynamics.com/chrome_tie_wraps_stainless_steel_wire_loom.htm#1157_Socket_with_Pigtails For $5 I can make my turn signals running light too. Anybody do this or is there a cheaper way?
  6. Plan on riding from Niagara Falls to Sault Ste. Marie {NY to WI.} next year. Maps show 6 to ferry to 17 and over or 69 to 17 and over. Maps seem to show things are few and far in between on 69 and 17, I need imput on whats ahead for me. thanks for your time and trouble:900[1]:
  7. If anyone is looking for leather windshield bags, vests, chaps, etc, try www.bargainpricewholesale.com They have some of the best prices on leather goods that I have seen in a long time.
  8. Today I had to put one of the pins back in my shift drum again. This is the third time in as many weeks. This time the metal tab that bends over the pin broke off, So i welded the pin to the plate, ruined it for future repairs; but it works for now. (every shop needs a small mig welder). I think that when i miss third and land in second gear it is some how causing pressure enough on the shift drum to push the pin out, I don't understand this happening; but something is doing it and it is always after landing in second. it could be that it has something to do with the shift lever being out of adjustment ( heel to toe shifter) causing me to land in second. All this aside, it's time to do a second gear job and a shift drum repair. I have aquired a donor bike/motor so i will be pulling the tranny from it as soon as i finish anpther job i'm doing so it may be a week or so. I plan to make repairs along the line of the repair that randy has made to his. So Randy I'm looking for all the info you have. I am posting a picture of the tranny for reference, If i am understanding your previous posts. The location i will be working on is shaft #1 and gear set #5 which is the second gear pinion. Is #10 the washer you fliped over ? and tell me again about how you cut the dogs on the side of the gear. I think you said that you cleaned up the wear by flatening out the wear on the end of the post which caused a little slack in the gear set but wasen't enough to really notice. then you cut out .020 from the dog, my question here is how did you shape the dog. Is it a slope with the .020at the base, or is it more of a hook or notch shape?
  9. 91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
  10. Has anyone else had this problem? The wire harness for the front turn signals, light bar, etc, is routed right between the steering stops below the headlight...In the past few weeks, a wire has worked up over the stop and been pinched and shorted out the lights. Last night I lost all my lights, I found the right turn signal wire cut and fried, last week it was one of the light bar passing lights, and before that , the same turn signal. I have tried pulling them as far as they will go in either direction, and still stay plugged in, but they keep working back in the line of the pinch point. I used zip ties to get them out of the way this time. I think I have an idea about an alternative way to route them but it may require drilling a hole in the back half of the fairing and feeding them through...this would eliminate the problem altogether... Unless someone has a better idea, I will try that next week... I am heading out for a few days this Friday for a color tour, so I don't want to tear into it right now....stocking up on fuses and electrical tape for the trip in the mean time...
  11. Well, not a good day today. I just got word that a good friend and former coworker finally passed away after a cruel battle with ALS. That's Lou Gehrig's disease. He was a helluva helicopter wrench who used to take care of an EMS helicopter with me in Fargo ND, and for the past six years he took care of one in Neenah WI. He was diagnosed back in December and it hit him like a sledgehammer over the next several months. He was the nicest guy anyone could ever want to meet, and was always willing to help anyone. He had more common sense than most people I know, and his word was good as gold. He just turned 41 this summer, less that 2 months before I did the same. He couldn't wait to teach his three year old son how to ride his mini-z, but he never got the chance. I can't imagine my 3 boys having to grow up without their dad. At least there are plenty of uncles around to give his son those experiences. His first loves were snowmobiles, helicopters, and his HD Sportster. He got me involved with vintage snowmobiles, and there are a lot of pictures of him and his sleds on my website. A lot of medical crews, pilots and patients owe their lives to him as a direct result of his expert and timely maintenance that kept his aircraft ready and safe. Fortunately, I was able to pack my family up in the car and go visit him last month. His wife didn't tell him we were coming, and he lit right up when we walked in the door. It was worth the trip just to see him light up like that. Unfortunately, he, and the rest of us, all knew it was the last time we would see him alive. I told his wife that I didn't know if I'd be able to make the funeral, but she said she was much happier that we took the time to visit when it still meant something to him. The funeral is Friday or Saturday, If I can't take the family again, I might try to ride the bike. It'll be an iron butt ride, but I don't know if I'll be able to go anyway, it's the nature of the job. http://homepage.mac.com/helomech/.Pictures/lakerun.gif
