I got a new set of Michelin Commanders for the 93 awhile back, and the stealer wanted over $200 to install-em even though I purchased the tires from them. (what a rip) Did a little nosing around and found a very experienced hobbiest that works on scoots to support his Big-Dog/Buell habbit. Got his name from a good friend with a Harley addiction. "Change my tires?" "Sure" says he. "While yer at it, how about adjusting steering head bearings, synching the carbs and servicing the rear drive?" "No problem" says he. About the same amount that the Stealer wanted to mount the tires. He actually pulled and inspected the head bearings packed and adjusted them along with the other mentioned service. Took it to him Saturday morning and he called me Sunday early afternoon saying it was done. WOW!! All I can say is I would'nt have believed there be this much difference. No low speed wobble. Tracks like she is on a rail, and almost leans herself into the curves. Has torque right out of the shoot, and idles like a new Lincoln. Can't wait to get her out and let her stretch her legs. Any locals need a refferal, PM me and I'll hook you up. DJ :thumbsup2:

Rate of failure?
RustyRecycledToy posted a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Still chasing ghosts here. While I sit and wait on new bearings, I can't help but wonder about other things. It's become an obsession that is driving me bonkers. On the first gens, specifically the '87, what is the frequency of failure of the middle drive gear and/or its components? While I'm hoping that replacing the bearings and greasing eveything up real good will solve my issues, I keep overthinking any other possible causes of my noise. I know it's in the drivetrain, just not sure where. If the failure rate of the middle gear is very low, I'll quit worrying about it so much and possibly sleep tonight. Ed -
Ok I finally made it to the dealer and bought the two rear bearings for the 83 Venture,By looking at the packages they look older than me and the grease is all caked and the grease has the old smell to it ,so I'M going to clean these tomorrow at work and repack them. Going to use Black Moly grease with a grease needle on these bearings is this good enough for them or is there some other grease that works better especially on the Cylindrica bearing?Any special way of repacking the cylindrica brg. Thanks buddy

I just finish building and painting a wooden turntable for my bike. Backing out of the garage was almost impossible and turning the bike around inside the garage was not an option so I decided to build a turntable. A couple of 2X12, a 2X6, 8 ball bearings (5/8 I.D.), a 5/8 hardwood dowel rod, a 12" turntable bearings, some screws, a few woodworking tools, many hours of work et voila!!!! Total cost around $70 My first test is a real success and I can now easily turn around my 800 pounds machine, the only thing left to do is secure the center of the turntable to the concrete floor in the garage and install a lock so the table doesn't swivel while going up or down on it. I have included a few pictures for those who may be interested.
