  1. Well, after 2 days of riding, member Divey and myself made it to Deadwood, SD, yesterday afternoon. Our first day of riding was over 12 hours, 5 of which were in rainy, cool conditions. Yesterday, it was nice and sunny, but quite windy. Due to the weather, I chose to wear my half helmet, but I should have stuck with the full face, as now I have quite the wind/sun burn face, with the white raccoon eyes where my sunglasses were. I'm sure the people that see me think I look quite funny. Oh well, what can you do? What an interesting place so far. We stayed in the Celebrity Hotel last night, but they are booked up full today, so we are moving to the Bullock Hotel this afternoon. Reports are that the Bullock is haunted. They have a book that guests are encouraged to add their ghostly experiences. I'm just hoping for a good night sleep, not to be awakened by some "bump in the night " type of thing, although that would be good for a story. We are looking forward to checking the area out and meeting up with VR member Casey J, aka Tony. There are lots of characters here, and apparently they have staged gunfights a couple of times a day...cool. The local cemetery has a couple of famous "residents "- Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane. We are also looking forward to seeing Mount Rushmore, which is about an hour away. Dale.
  2. I just looked at Yamaha Canada website. $31.999 for the TC model. We shall see how it does on the market. I would like to see one in person, not that I could spend that much $$ on a toy. I'm married, and would like to stay that way 😜 Dale.
  3. It's got a wee bit of a blind spot to the right, it seems.
  4. Glad to hear you finished the saddle sore 1000 safe and sound, Ron. It was good practice for meeting Doug and me in Deadwood very soon. Dale.
  5. Wow, what a nice offer, CaseyJ. Not too sure what rides we will be doing, but we will try to touch base with you to meet up. I really look forward to riding in this area, hopefully the weather cooperates. Dale.
  6. Well, it's all set. Fellow VR member Divey and myself are heading to Deadwood on June 10. Hopefully we will arrive there on the 11th, weather permitting. Thanks to all that posted suggestions for the area. If any of you would like to meet us there, it would be great!! We won't be able to stay too long, as I need to be back the following weekend, but we will try to make the most of the trip with the time we have. Dale.
  7. Cool guys, thanks. That doesn't sound too bad, as I have split the fairing to install my passing lamps. If I survived that, I'm sure I could do this job. Dale.
  8. I so want to get an LED bulb in my RSV. Is it difficult to install, and is there any other issues to consider such as current draw, etc? The original bulb in these things is quite pathetic, IMHO. Dale.
  9. Frightening, truly frightening!! Like all those before me, I'm glad you lived to tell the tale, Rick. Hang in there, brighter days ahead. Dale.
  10. That sounds good. I'm a regular hours worker, but often look for a ride on the weekends. Perhaps one weekend Divey and myself could meet you for a coffee and a cruise. Dale.
  11. Hey, Uturn, my Edmonton brother. We will have to meet up one day for coffee, as there aren't too many of us VentureRiders around these parts. Its too bad your trip got postponed. Just a heads up on travelling that way in June. My good buddy and fellow member Doug Ivey (divey) and I went to a "Venture West" event in California 2 years ago in June. The weather was extremely hot in Cali and surrounding states, and when we left the event, It was recommended by Nancy Rogers (Ace High Leathers), that we get "Cooling Vests", to help keep our core temperature down during the ride. I had never heard of this type of thing, but we tracked a couple down at a motorcycle shop, and let me tell you, they are THE BOMB! All you do is soak them in water, squish out the excess water and put it on under your jacket. They slowly evaporate during the ride, but felt amazing in the heat. When we would stop for gas, we would hit the washroom and re-apply the water. I can't stress enough how well these items worked. They are only around $30, if memory serves. You don't want to start getting heat exhaustion or heat stroke anytime, but when you are on 2 wheels, it is that much worse. Dale
  12. Congrats on the new bike. I also have a '13 RSV, the last of the line. I also put the OEM luggage rack on the bike, which was fairly easy to do, but like others have said, measure carefully. That was the hardest part. I think i may have over thought it, as it seemed to take quite a while getting it lined up. I finally gave up trying, and got my wife to have a look visually to see if she thought it was aligned ok. She is a perfectionist, so i figured if it passes her inspection, it should be ok to drill the holes. If I remember correctly, the instructions say NOT to use Lock-Tite on the hardware, as I think it damages the trunk lid itself. I also bought the luggage liners from Yamaha, which are ok, but I also got the trunk rack bag that is supposed to be for this rack. I hate that one! It is the biggest P.O.S. going. The shape and design of it make it hard to get things in and out, it doesn't hold much and the velcro straps that you are supposed to use to secure it to the rack do not line up perfectly with the bars on the rack. I ended up using additional strapping to secure it just to ensure it would not come off on the highway. I have since replaced this bag with another brand bag (Chinese knock off) that I like much better.
  13. Wow, Puc, you certainly can paint a picture with your words. Congrats on your new bike, she looks like fun! If your daughter ever gets that book published, please let us know. I for one would buy it, as I know that there would be some great stories in it, judging by the stories I have read on this site from you. Dale.
  14. Hi JF. Like many here, I have been following this thread from the start, patiently awaiting the next instalment. This was indeed a great read on what must have been a fantastic adventure. Thank you so much for posting it with all the pictures and incredible detail outlining the story. I am in awe of you having completed such a journey by yourself. Well done, sir! Dale.
  15. Thanks, Puc, that sounds like a great place to visit. You sure have had some adventures on that scoot of yours. Dale.
  16. Wow, Puc, thanks for all the great information. Now I really really want to go out that way. My wife and I have been discussing where to vacation this summer. If she wants to go to Deadwood, it would be in July,I might have to go in the cage, but if she doesn't want to go, I will have to talk divey (Doug Ivey) into making a road trip on the bikes in June (I don't think it would be too hard to convince him, if his schedule allowed). Either way, we would be hotel-ing it. Haven't camped for years. Dale.
  17. Thanks for the great info, guys. Hopefully I can make it out there in June, before the silly season. Dale.
  18. Hi all. I was wondering if anyone here has been to Deadwood. I was toying with the idea of taking a trip there this spring/summer, but would like some input on what it is like. I love old west stuff, and I understand this place has lots of history.. My first choice would be Tombstone, but it is just too far away. Thanks. Dale.
  19. Thats great, Rick! Sounds like fun times ahead. Don't forget to look Doug Ivey and myself up when you guys get to our neck of the woods this summer. Dale.
  20. This is an entertaining thread, keep the stories coming! Here are a few of mine (usually involving my older brother) When we were young (about 6 and 7, i think), we decided to paint the back entrance of the house. Once mom noticed what we were doing, she was not amused. Sore bums were in our immediate future. Once we got a little older, Kung Fu was popular on TV. At the beginning of the show, it shows David Carradine having spears thrown at him while he knocked them out of danger with his forearms. Well, we decided this looked like something we should do, so we made some spears with large tree branches. Let me tell you, knocking them out of the air with our forearms hurt like hell. Qui-Chang-Kane made it look so easy. A little older yet (mid teens), we used to get into pellet gun fights with some of our friends. There was one day, it was just me and him in this battle. I was behind a door, peeking at him through the slit. He was about 30 feet away, pointing the gun at me and shot. Well, it turns out his aim was dead on. He hit me in the middle of my forehead. I bled like a stuck pig. When my folks got home, we lied about what actually happened, of course. I always thought that the permanent bump I felt in that wound was just a bone chip, but then started to think it was indeed still the pellet. Fast forward about 30 years, I had my doctor check it out. Indeed, the X-ray showed a nice clear image of a pellet lodged in the middle of my forehead, so he removed it for me shortly there after. To this day I thank god that the pellet didn't hit me in the eye. (I prefer having 2 eyes ). Ok, late teens now. There is a beer strike in Alberta. What is a poor boy to do? Well a friend of mine and myself decided to take my motorcycle to Montana (7 or 8 hours away from where I live) to bring home some beer. You really can't carry much beer back on a motorcycle, especially when you have a passenger. Anyway, the friend was quite a fan of pot. He had some on him when we crossed the border. I can remember sitting on the bike in the line up to cross the border on our way back home, and this mangy old german shepherd was wondering about, and came sniffing around us. My friend has his pot in his sock, and as the dog got closer, he is trying to dissuade the dog from coming any closer by making a kicking motion toward the dog, fearing that it was a drug sniffing dog. It turns out that it was just a lazy old dog, but we didn't know that at the time.
  21. I put on the Michelin Commander II's last year after reading a review by one of our members, saying how much lighter and more nimble the bike seemed at low speeds with this tire. To be honest, I was just hoping to notice a little difference, not expecting too much, but, to my delight, I noticed a HUGE difference. It was amazing how much lighter this big beast felt after these tires were installed. Dale.
  22. That sounds great, Rick. Keep me posted on when you folks are coming, we would love to see you. Dale.
  23. Wow, that is a beautiful bike. I would love to have some of that Kool-Aid. Enjoy.
  24. Congrats, Rick! That looks awesome. You and Nina will have much fun and many stories to tell after hauling that thing across North America, I'm sure. I just noticed your signature as "bikeless". Did you sell the Roadie too? Dale.
