  2. Yep, I'll agree. There is no substitute for the First Gen Venture. I've looked at all the 'tourers' out there and with the exception of the GL1500 or GL1800 there is nothing that offers the power, handling, pillion comfort, load capacity, weather protection, audio performance with passenger/rider intercom sophistication, 'two-up touring capability' etc., etc. all in one motorcycle. Sure, some have some things that are better than the Venture, but then those same bikes fall short in some other important area. I am with Pete on this: find another low mileage First Gen and ride it 'til either it or you die. When I picked up my '91 last fall, I realized that it was gonna be the last 'two-up' touring motorcycle I will probably be buying. After all, barring an accident (again), the bike is good for 100,000 plus miles yet. And at my current rate of annual mileage, that 100,000 miles ain't gonna happen in MY lifetime.
  3. Ben, I have two 1983 Service Manuals. One is an original Yamaha Genuine SM that I picked up eBay for FIVE dollars! That one is not for sale. But, if you keep an eye out for the Manual on eBay, you too can score! The other manual I have is a photocopied version of the Genuine Service Manual in a three ring binder. If that would suffice, I'll send it to you for the cost of postage. Here are two Yamaha Service Manuals on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Yamaha-Owners-Service-Repair-Manual-Venture-XVZ-1200-1200TDK-1200TK-XVZ1200-/351003357442?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item51b96e3102&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-FACTORY-83-85-Yamaha-XVZ1200-XVZ-1200-Service-Shop-Repair-Manual/321233756199?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222008%26algo%3DSIC.MOTORS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D22405%26meid%3D6508261152801326137%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D8888%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D351003357442&rt=nc
  4. Doug, I experienced the same sudden surge on my '83. The bike had been sitting for awhile when I got it and apparently the carbs were a bit dirty. Anyway, it would idle (finally) and accelerate seemingly OK, when suddenly, it would "just take off" like a striped ass ape. The idle circuit of the carbs was not optimum, and I compensated with idle speed and pilot jet settings to get it to idle and pull from a stop without hesitation, but then VOOM, it'd take off like the SAPE. Finally after multiple 'shotgun' cleanings and a few tanks of Seafoamed gas, the idle was getting faster and smoother and I would slow the idle and tweak the pilot screws, etc. until it became a smooth strong acceleration throughout the range. It, like all MKI Ventures likes the higher RPM and will pull stronger as the RPMs climb, but the sudden surge was remedied when the idle circuit was cleaned up.

  9. I am not certain what 'plastics' you are referring to. Are you speaking of the 'lowers' that contain the 'knee vents' and act to protect your shins from the rain and wind? (Items #1 and #18). All the First Gen 'lowers' are the same. I'd be interested in seeing those that are different. If you are speaking of the lower fairing (lowers), some people, including myself, have removed them to allow clearance for our legs when using engine mounted highway pegs. Irrespective of what plastics you are referring to, all the plastic from the seat forward is interchangeable regardless of First Gen year. http://cdn.boats.net/diagram/yamaha/02/0290/0045.png
  10. Yes, it is based on a Buell XB, from a Spanish custom shop.
  11. EBay. Check the posts above where I linked to a few different eBay offerings to accomplish the conversion from CLASS to manual. Really, it's just as simple as installing a Schrader valve in place of the compressor. Short hose for the front, same hose as from the compressor for the rear; just install a Schrader valve. No need to swap forks or shock.
  12. That is why I am confused. The First Generation Ventures are 1983-1993, while the Second Gen Ventures are 1999-2013. So when you said Second Gen, you meant First Gen, MKII? The MKII is 1986-1993. The 1983-1985 are MKI. Review my earlier post with pics. ALL First Gen (1983-1993), Standards (no CLASS) will look like the shock you described with the rubber bellows and like my pic of the 1983-1984 Standard. On those bikes, the spring is internal (inside that big shiny cylinder). ALL First Gen (1983-1993), Royale shocks have an external spring. The Second Gen (1999-2013) Ventures all have internal springs. Further, Second Gen shocks have a fork type lower mount (see the last pic in my previous post), as opposed to the rubber bushed lower mount on the First Gen (1983-1993).
  13. Doug, are you speaking of the shock that is on the bike now? A Second Gen shock assembly does not have an exposed spring as you previously described as visible on the shock that is on the bike. Did you mean to say that you think it's a First Gen stock assembly? The red spring is not stock in either case, while the shock is likely to be stock. A Second Gen shock assembly will not mount on a First Gen bike.
  14. I thought I was pretty well informed about the Ventures, but I'll plead ignorance: What is a 'Venture Deluxe'? "Upgrade to a Harley"...snort!

  17. Currently Color Rite does not have your desired color listed on their site, however, their color code for Dull Blue Cocktail was 5410L. Color Rite produced it at one time, but apparently is not currently produced. I suspect that given enough demand (and money) they have the capability of making another batch of 5410L. But, Jeff's comment is actually your most satisfactory choice anyway. The paint on your 25 year old motorcycle has aged and undoubtedly faded, so that even if you were to find Dull Blue Cocktail, the paint probably wouldn't match what you have.
  18. Well done! Since you were the first to correctly guess the PGO, do you have a motorcycle for us to guess? Meanwhile, I will post this for your edification:
  19. Honda Mugen MRV1000 Hirotoshi, son of Soichiro Honda (the godfather of Honda) started the performance engine tuning and parts manufacturer Mugen in 1973. The MRV1000 was to be Mugen's attempt to leverage the popularity of British motorcycles. Sadly however, due to the high ticket price, producing the MRV1000 for public sale was not viable. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XfeL1_DyzIk/TnmtXDyIimI/AAAAAAAAHac/HyCp_428ZhQ/s640/mugen-mrv-1000-engine-2.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UbJh00QBAHQ/TnmtVv40jsI/AAAAAAAAHaQ/wWDlQr-gR0E/s640/603852_anOfc2SH_c.jpghttp://www.caferacer.com.pl/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/mugen-mrv-1000-2.jpg Check out the fake 'drum' brake.
