  1. Has anyone ever experienced a faulty key ignition causing "no spark" to one of the cylinders?? I thought I had a bad TCI but I tried another and I had the same problem. I fiddled with the key (sprayed a little WD-40 in the key slot) - worked it back and forth a couple of dozen times and suddenly got spark! The bike has kind of been driving me crazy with the lack of spark to that cylinder - then - suddenly spark again... Just wondering if the bad key ignition could cause that symptom or not - best to ask the Venture specialists here on the board. Thanks in advance
  2. I have ran Sea foam through it... 2 cans so far. Put half a can in the tank , poured some in the carbs while and while not running. I'm not sure what a "soak" is - but im willing to do that too if necessary. Should I take the carbs off again? Is there something I can look for in them that is causing the symptoms its showing (not taking gas and throttling up?).
  3. Go to Youtube - type in 1986 venture carbs. It's the video by jamkitful 1986 VR carburation problem REDUX Ok. Here's a link to the video of the problem with my bike... Dont know if anyone can glean anything from it but ??? I did all the previous tasks that everyone mentioned - tightened the airbox down, made sure there are no leaks, etc. etc. Still the bike runs extremely bad (almost like three cylinders). It wont take throttle (barely). It runs a little better on choke than off choke but still bogs down and eventually dies. I'm starting to think the guy that cleaned the carbs just missed or messed something up?? Either that or maybe it just needs synchronized (though I doubt that would make it runs this bad)? If anyone has any further ideas I can check before I sdend this thing to the scrap heap - I would be appreciative. Thanks again.
  4. I've checked the filter - not the pump.. I just installed a new gas tank on it a few months ago. I just know that before I had the carbs cleaned - it ran good... Just leaked out of the overflow on one carb.
  5. Ok - Did what you guys advised. I put the carbs back on - put the airbox on, made sure it was sealed, tight and proper. It does run better... Not right or even close... At least I can give it a little throttle now. It has extreme hesitation on throttle - if I give it a full twist, it hesitates and then revs up slowly but does NOT sound right. It sounds like it's running on three cylinders or something? It's got spark to all 4 cylinders. It still runs and throttles better on choke as it did before. AND - i let it idle for about 5 minutes and it eventually just died and had a hard time starting again - even on choke! Any other ideas? Am I missing something? Did the guy that cleaned the carbs miss something or not clean, disassemble them properly? Beautiful bike! One of the most chromed out Ventures I've ever seen. I'm just about to sell it for parts! Shame
  6. Ok - gonna try putting the box on and seeing if that's the culprit... Along the same lines - the airbox on mine has ALWAYS worked loose -(the clamps on the bottom of the carbs). No matter how much I tighten them up - all 4 come loose almost immediately! It's been a problem with my bike since the day I bought it. Any ideas? Is that a common thing with the Ventures? Thanks again
  7. I will let you guys know. If something that simple is what's going on - i'm really going to be mad at myself for taking those carbs off and apart three times! Thanks for the advice.
  8. Really? Maybe the fact that my carbs are clean for once is causing this??? I'll try it today. Does yours have similar symptoms with the airbox off? Does it bog and seem like it's starving for gas and only idle on choke as mine does? Thanks
  9. Yet again I turn to the experts on this board for help. The problem I'm having is driving me NUTS!! Here goes - 86 Venture 1300. I had an overflow leak from the left front carbuerator the last time I rode my bike. It leaked steadily under power and with the choke on - not idling unchoked. I assumed a "gummed up bowl" on that carb . and because I've never had them cleaned - I decided to pull them and have them done... I took them to a local guy - he has a "ultrasonic" cleaning tank he uses and is a very busy mechanic so I'm hoping his work is not the problem?? I get them back - put them on - hook up the overflow tubes on top, tighten everything down, choke and throttle cables back on, etc - and checked to be sure I didn't miss anything.. It will not run! It will not take throttle at all, it bogs out immediately if trying to give throttle. On choke - it will idle at maybe 1800 RPM's or so but as without choke - as soon as throttle is applied - it bogs out and backfires a little.... and dies. I didn't put the airbox on and I can see the slides moving as it runs. I've taken the bowl drains out and each is full of gas. The carbs are tight to the rubber on the bottom. Everything seems okay! I know sometimes that these Venture's wont run right with the airbox off but I've had mine off numerous times throughout the years and it never made a difference. That's about the only thing I haven't tried to remedy this problem. I do know it ran well, except for the overflowing left front carb when I took them out to be cleaned. I took them apart myself as well hoping to find something obvious, put them back together and back on the bike - same problem! Any advice would be very appreciated. I've had these out three times now and getting pretty fast at it. Pretty tired at it too. Thanks. ahunt2412@yahoo.com
  10. Ok... Thanks for the ideas. So far everything has checked out. I rechecked the vacuum boost hose - hooked up a spare I had around to make sure it wasn't fried, checked every imaginable hose, wire, etc, in the vicinity of the airbox and battery and found nothing amiss or unhooked... I dont know whether to just go ahead and buy another TCi and try it or maybe I have a bad float/carb all of a sudden or what? I just wasn't sure that if a TCI box is putting out spark to all cylinders, then its ok - even under load ( its backfiring slightly under throttle and bogging). I'll keep after it. Getting old though. Maybe it's time to take it in?
  11. Hmmm? WHere is the vacuum boost line you mention? Thanks
  12. Thaks in advance for any info. you can give me on this problem.. MY 86 Venture developed a bad TCI box last year.. Bought one on Ebay and it worked fine until just the other day. I lost spark to the front cylinder and hooked my old TCI up and had spark - so I knew it was the box. Then had a family member who is an elect. tech replace diodes and resolder everything, etc. I put that reapired box on the bike and had spark all the way around and it ran fine - FOR ONE DAY! Again - i lost spark to that front cyl. He again repaired it and I now have spark to all four cylinders but have developed a "bogging down" when applying more than a couple thousand rpm's of throttle. It sits and idles fine but when applying throttle, it backfires a little and boggs down. Is it just a bad TCI or did I mess up and unhook something under the airbox that is causing this or ??? Again - thanks if anyone can help.. jkit02@yahoo.com
