  1. Thank you, another option I hadn't considered. That doesn't sound very difficult to do either. thanks. I have no shortage of dumb questions, and I really appreciate all the input you guys are offering, so here's still another. There are 2 antennas on the bike, one I assume is a CB? which I won't be using, so I may take it off and store it. The other is the radio I believe. Is that whip antenna really necessary for the radio or has anyone experimented with a stubby little antenna that is not quite so conspicuous? Thank you.
  2. Thanks, no, no salvage title. I looks just fine also, but the warranty was something attractive as it is still in effect until 7/13, but playing with the caliper location, and riding height would seem to be a great excuse for the mfg to void the warranty, and then there goes that bit of perk. I also thought I read somewhere on the forum, (and for the life of me I can't find it again) someone who said playing with the riding height negatively effects the ride at highway speeds. I guess there is something to be said for the old saying ignorance is bliss ....The more I learn the more concerned I'm becoming. I dunno. maybe the lowering is a savings to me, cause I'm short also. LOL, wish I was just rich and it didn't matter what I chose.
  3. Thanks guys for all your help. Ya know I pick this bike up Saturday, and all this new info I'm learning about it is in some respects troubling. Lowering the bike and having the caliper repositioned. I dunno ..... what effect does all this have on handling on the highway, braking, and for that matter warranty being voided. The fact that the bike got (supposedly, gently) laid down, and that's why the fuel tank was replaced and no badges were put on. Hmm.... does this 9500 bucks and 6K miles still sound good? I may be experiencing a touch of cold feet. I'm just am not sure if they are cold feet or sensible feet.
  4. I'm learning a bit more about the bike now. From the warranty info I found the original selling dealer and called him. Nice guy, he practically wanted my first born child to divulge any info about the bike. Finally he told me the owner laid it over cause he was short (hmm, like me) and dented the tank. They replaced the tank, and it didn't come with badges. He also told me the owner then had the bike lowered. (how can I tell how they did that?) Then he said, (can you believe) if I wanted more info and he had to spend more time with me, I had to buy something from him. Wow, nice guy. I didn't dare ask about the original dented tank. Geez ......
  5. LOL, Mike could you provide a larger picture of the tank emblems for me to see? Thanks!
  6. First, a special thanks to eusa1 (mike) for sending me a tank badge, I'm not sure which side it is for, as I have not yet received it, but if anyone has another laying around, I'm interested. Here is the bike, a 2008 with 6K on it.
  7. 55 and 60 in 4th gear? Is the Venture geared differently than my 96RSTC? 60 in 4th with my 96 and I might be chasing connecting rods across the road. Mine wants to be in 5th gear somewhere between 45 and 50.
  8. Thank you, you guys are all such great help. I'm not familiar with the Delphi forum. Could you point me to it so I can register? Thanks again.
  9. Thanks to all who have replied. I do appreciate all your input. I'm in CT btw. The Venture I'm looking at is model number XVZ13TFS Is this the "Venture S" ? and is that the base model? I'm not familiar with the differences. One last dumb question ... (embarrassed) Being a tad on the short side, the bigger tank on the Venture has me turning in my brake foot to comfortably apply the rear brake. Is there also an after market pedal that is an inch or so wider? I know .. dumb, but so many things are running through my mind and there isn't much room up there for all that activity. Thanks!
  10. This is what is scaring me. It's absolutely ridiculous ... check out the price on the emblems ..... http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/2008-yamaha-motorcycle-xvz13tf-royal-star-venture/o/m17110 click on body and fender, and then fuel tank. It's parts numbered 3 + 4. $211 dollars PER SIDE!!! LMAO, (it's really not that funny though ) And the entire passing light assembly is around 300 bucks. I wish I could handle the down payment without the trade, but alas I can't. With 32K on my 96, and without the hassle of selling, and considering it's knocking off $150 bucks in sales tax, ..... I guess I'm trying to talk myself into doing this with the trade in. But when I start factoring in that, plus the emblems, plus the passing lights, I'm starting to get cold feet. I did put a deposit on it ...... I don't need it, but .... I would love to have it. I am getting tired of that 1996 model's unbalanced crankshaft. Yamaha tried to simulate the big twin vibration and all it is, is annoying. Arghh, if I were only wealthy.
  11. would I have to remove the saddle bags to access those bolts? My daughter also loves to ride with me and I'm sure she would love them on. I seriously would like to replace the emblems, the grey looks so bland, but of course you can't be fussy when you're talking used I know. Thanks for your replies, I figure I couldn't get a whole lot more for my bike but I just am not up on the used prices. thanks again.
  12. Hi all. I value your input and would like to present you with my current situation and see what you all think. My wife and I were out riding yesterday and happened upon a Victory MC dealer. We went in to look around and found sitting there a used 2008 RS Venture. Grey color 6000 miles. 9500 bucks. They would only offer me 2500 for my 1996 RSTC. It's in good condition but does show some signs of age in the chrome. It has 32K on it. The Venture doesn't have passing lamps or .... for some reason it doesn't have the fuel tank emblems on the sides. Maybe the owner didn't like them. It sure doesn't look like it was down or anything. We took it for a ride, and if we had to find anything we didn't like I'd say my foot got pretty warm and my wife says the handles to hold on the sides of the seat rested on her butt. (It ain't that big either) Well, neither one of us have to rush to the burger store to prevent starving to death. Anyway, how do these prices seem? Is there any place to shop for emblems and passing lamps where they don't rape you? thanks.
  13. Well, I'll tell ya, I just road tested the new Kawasaki 1700 Voyager. Here's my official results. It sits about 3 inches higher than my 96 Tour Classic even though it's advertised as being a lower seat height. I'm not a tall guy (5'6") and I found it slightly dangerous for me even with my wife on the back I had to tip toe at stops. That's not good. It is down on power (by my own guestimation) about 30 to 40 percent from my Tour Classic. YEAH, that much. It's a hound dog, although once on the highway 6th gear makes for a nice ride. Construction is not as good as the Yamaha, the frame looks cheaper also. I told the dealer, I'd be back to see him when he got in the new Yamaha. Bottom line, the carbs don't seem so bad anymore. Boy I had high hopes for that Kawasaki. Oh well.
  14. Thanks for the replies, and If you are right Jerry, (and I believe you are, that's why I asked) they better get on the stick and let us know cause when april rolls around, damn, that Kawasaki is looking good ....
  15. Hi all. I own a 1996 Tour Classic with quite a few miles on it and I'm considering buying a new bike after the winter. I looked at the Yamaha website and was surprised to see the Venture still has carburators. Does anyone know if there will be a fuel injected model? I hope so cause the next option is gonna have to be the Kawasaki Voyager if not.
  16. Well, my first trip to the drawing board for footrest extensions for my daughter had me thinking it would be easiest to make them out of hard oak 2x4 blocks. I tried it, but the angle was N/G. So back to Home Depot to buy some metal and do some fabricating. Last time I welded was 30yrs ago, LOL ... by the time I got back in the groove, I was done. But ugly as they may be, they worked like a charm. Here are some pics of both the first design oak, and the steel finished product. I included what the stock pad looked like since these were not stock on the 96 model to begin with.
  17. If I may ask, does anyone have the Mr. Gasket part number for that fuel pump? And, would it fit a 96 RSTC? for 40 bucks I'd stick one in my saddle bag.
  18. I just told my daughter we should find some of those Frankenstein platform shoes ... that didn't go over so well.
  19. No no ... that's not a bad alternative either. I think however, I'd be inclined to drill four holes right through the existing passenger floorboards to accept the zip ties cause I would be very nervous about the possibility of them sliding off. Also wiggle would worry me as she is not an experienced rider. But that may be the best and fasted way to do this. Maybe a nice 4x4 block. I'm very happy to hear all ideas ...thank you very much!
  20. That's a great thought also! I'll tell you my wacky early drawing board idea if you promise not to laugh. They sell these universal foot pegs that turn at different angles, kind of like these I have my eye on ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370379696784&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT [url=http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5335830059&toolid=10001&mpre=http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5335830059&toolid=10001&mpre=http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?campid=5335830059&toolid=10001&mpre=http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370379696784&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT][/url] My idea is to attach the clamp to the passenger backrest support bar, then drill right threw the clamp and backrest bar and pin it once it is in position, then unbolt the foot peg and replace it with a large size lag bolt with an end welded on it to fit right back in where I unbolted the foot peg. Then onto the lag bolt, screw on a wooden padded arm rest made out of a wooden 2" cloths closet rod drilled out in the middle and screwed into the lag bolt.
  21. Thank you so much for your reply, I am leaning now toward fabricating one from either billet or steel. Nothing fancy as I don't have all the high tech equipment. I was thinking along the lines of taking advantage of the pin and clip design that holds the original passenger floorboard on. I'm going to look for a tube with a 1/4" hole that will accept the stock pin and then weld a piece on it that raises straight up 4", and then I'll weld a flat to that for her foot. I hate to have to spend big bucks and then end up fabricating and hacking up an expensive part. Plus I have to figure out a way to make a few arm rests as added stability for her. Sure was hoping these were things already made to fit somewhere.
  22. Hi everyone. Before I attempt to reinvent the wheel, perhaps someone on the forum has some info to help me. My daughter is 9 yrs old and yesterday I took her around our neighborhood on the bike, she loved it. In fact she loved it so much that she wants to take a longer country ride with me. I'm a little uncomfortable with her fit to the bike. Previously I installed some later model OEM rear foot pads for my wife. they sit about 4" lower than I'd like for my daughter to be comfortable. If I could find a few more of these used foot pads, I might be able to tig weld a nice machined block to them and be able to switch them out using the pin and clip to swap out for my wife or daughter. ( Of course other ideas welcome) Next, I'd love to be able to fabricate a few arm rests for her unless anyone knows of some available aftermarket options. Thanks, joe
  23. Well, after much thought, I decided to let the Yamaha dealer rebuild the carbs for me (96 Tour Classic) as I did not have access to any "O" rings or gaskets or needles and seats and I didn't want to have to deal with that issue. Anyway, Carb rebuild ( mechanic couldn't get the seats out) replaced front tire ( that I supplied) flush the fuel tank, change oil and filters, and just about $825 dollars later, I got my bike back. OH ... yeah ... carbs are still leaking ... here we go on another nightmare. Gotta get it back to them again. Ahh... getting disgusted. As it is idling I can see it dripping from the carbs at a pretty good rate. What I don't understand is, why can't I duplicate this problem by simply turning the key on to "on" and letting the fuel pump fill the bowls. Why wouldn't there be enough fuel pressure to duplicate this with the motor off? I just have the feeling the dealer isn't going to take the time to really look at this the way I would have. I think the gas tank and air box has to come off and then somehow duplicate the leak when you can at least see the darned carbs. I'm so bummed. My wife and I got the bike home, got a baby sitter, hopped on the bike and after driving to the corner on our way to a nice ride, started smelling gas. Turned around, called off the babysitter, and really got bummed out......
  24. Hi all. This is my first post. I wish I had found this forum earlier. I own a 1996 RSTC that my wife and I unfortunately don't get to ride as often as we would like. I always use fuel stabilizer when we store it, but this spring when I started it, fuel was dripping from the carb area. As I said, I wish I had found this forum sooner. I assumed it was gummed up needle and seat, and although I've rebuild a few auto carbs, I've never played with these. After calling the dealer and getting a quite expensive quote, I decided I'd tackle this myself. I removed the carb assembly and I'm going to disassemble them asap. I noticed it is the first carb in line from the inlet of the fuel line that is leaking. I'm a little leery about all this and don't know if I should go all out or just remove and clean the bowl on the one I have now leaking. Also, I'm wondering about a sentence in the Yamaha service manual I purchased with the bike that says don't use any caustic carb cleaners, just use a petroleum based cleaner . I was going to soak the bodies in Delco carb cleaner over night, wash them off in hot water and soap and blow them dry. Now I'm lost as to what to do. I also will try to change the fuel filter, but it looks buried in the frame pretty good. I haven't really looked closely at that situation yet. Any advice would be appreciated. Wish I had known about simply tapping on the bowl or using sea foam (whatever that is, I'll look into that also). Thanks.
