OK you're not gonna like this, but we need to determine if the voltage for the backlight is coming from the master unit or the wiring harness, this involves splitting the fairing. There is a multi pin connector, like with 17 wires coming in it that connects to the main audio unit. Disconnect that and see if the light goes out. That will eliminate 4 out of the 6 wires going to the controller. There are two more wires, the L/G and P/B wires that go through another connector en route to the master unit... You sure have a toughie there buddy!! When your key is off, only voltage going to the memory backup should be there, which I think/ass u me goes through the odometer fuse I was looking at earlier. I guess pulling that fuse may give us a clue IF the light goes out with it pulled and the keys in your pocket...

No, my bad Jay, that's the backup line for memory. Give me a few minutes...

OK I do have a left gold fairing for you from an '87 that has the vent and turn signal assembly on it. They are the same as the '83/'84 except the cream colored section wraps around to the engine cover area rather than ending just as it turns the corner of the back section. There is one minor crack that wil be easy to repair, and the edge below the mirror was ground down to the black plastic (about 3 in long and 1/8 in wide) but could be easily touched up or hidden with a piece of plastic chrome, etc. Will respond to your PM later. Did you find a mirror yet?? Didn't see any but I'm pretty sure I do have one...somewhere...

I need to change out my bad Stator

Ummmm, should be OK, I think I used some with a Rockwell of 8 but it's been too long. No, to my knowledge no clearance issues, been in the bike since early 2011... -
I need to change out my bad Stator

The screws are loctited in, so a little heat works wonders!! I ended up substituting regular hex head bolts when I put my H.O. stator in, just pick out bolts that have a decent hardness/strength to them, and a dab of some of Jeanie's nail polish on them as well... P.S. Did you use metric JIS screwdriver tips on them?? SAE tips on metric screws will strip the heads every time... -
Bit the bullet today and pulled the AC units out of the windows, and got out my long sleeve shirts and put away my short sleeve shirts... ***SIGH***

YAY!!!! Now if we can stop subsidising the corn industry and get rid of the 10% Ethanol as well and start getting 10% better gas mileage...

The risers made by Barons does indeed raise and pull back... -
Hmmmm, I dunno Mike, but based on the rather poor turnout this year, it would not surprise me if there is no International next year...

Hey, nice catch!!! Yup, should be 3.5 QUARTS, not 3.5 Liters... -
Blue Sky, I do NOT use a credit card unless I get something out of it!! Generally use the GM card for 5% back up to the max $500 per year ($10,000 in purchases) then I use a couple of others that give me 2%, 3% or 5% back. Yes I use the Citi cash back card along with Bank Of America, Discover, Capital One, etc depending on how much cash back I get. 1% doesn't cut it at all!! Pretty much EVERYTHING goes on a credit card, and paid off monthly because there is no sense getting a small percent cash back then paying interest on it!!! Chuck, actually very little rain here!! It's been cloudy, and a few sprinkles here and there but no wash out! Tempertures in the mid 70's too! Yesterday we visited Colonial Williamsburg, saw a lot of stuff but probably only about half of everything. Today we visited the Jamestown settlement, and same story! Sooo, plenty to see at both places the next time! We did not get to Yorktown yet, or Busch Gardens. We want to see Virginia Beach, Norfolk, etc in the future. We definitely will get our use out of this location in the future! Got to try Virginia Peanut Soup today, delicious!!!

Well then, sounds like defective R/R then!! No two regulators will regulate at the exact same voltage, but they should be in the same general range, around 13.2 at idle, and go up with RPM's to their actual regulating point of round 14 volts, more or less, and stay there regardless of how much higher the RPM's go. I had one that regulated around 12.5 volts, it's in a landfill somewhere now...

Do a search on how to check the output of your stator, but in a nutshell, you want to disconnect the connector at the R/R and with a voltmeter on AC, read the output voltage FROM THE STATOR which is the 3 wires that are the same color, NOT the black or red wires. You will take 3 readings on the wires. In your mind label the 3 wires A, B, and C. You will read A and B, A and C, and B and C. At idle you will see a fairly low AC voltage, usually under 20 volts, and they all should be roughly the same. When you rev the engine up, at around 2000 RPM you will see maybe 40 VAC, at 3000 RPM maybe 60 VAC, etc. All 3 readings at the different RPM's should be close to the same. If one reading is much lower than the other then you may have a bad Stator, or possibly a bad connection where the Stator plugs into the main harness under the seat near the fuel pump, fuel filter, etc. Also, with the bike turned off and key off, before you read the AC voltages, switch to the ohms function and check the resistance of the three combinations of leads, AND each wire to ground. You should see the resistance readings approximately the same, AND each wire to ground should read infinity, open...

The issue with AGM batteries is some modern chargers, especially with the "float" chargers, is that the electronic monitoring and the AGM don't play well together, and they can actually "kill" an AGM battery. For AGM you need either an old fashioned simple charger, or one that is specifically designed for AGM's...

Yah! We got free tour of Winery and multiday pass for Williamsburg. It cost us $9500 for the "Deed and we can keep it, sell it, or will it to our children, which is what we are doing. A 4 bedroom condo was around 70K from what I remember but we took a 1 bedroom which is all we need, for the mentioned price. There is a " maintenance fee" of $207 a year which pays taxes, insurance, etc. We also got membership in a "points" system (which costs an extra $132 a year) which allows us to use many other worldwide locations instead of here in Williamsburg. Those prices sound waaaay too cheap!!! What all did it include??? Mine gives me 4 weeks per year (I think) forever, to include whoever gets it after we are dead and gone. All I know is it now seems to cost around $125 to $150 and up depending on the location just for a hotel room, and our condo has kitchen and living room etc in a gated community... The price was so good sounding to me I put it on my interest free credit card until I get home and extract the money from my 401K. It will pay for itself in hotel costs well within 10 years.

Any wires coming in/going out?? Can't read what the bottom switch label is but it looks like it was made by Liberty and the switch goes from "normal" to ??? Looks like some kind of little speaker in the grille. Seems to have an indicator light on it, might be some kind of an alarm for something or other. Probably battery powered self contained, that's why I asked about wires...

See?!!? Piece 'o cake!!

Forks reinstall, any tips?

You probably accidently knocked the wire off of the temperature sensor, a very common thing to do. Just follow the radiator hose to the engine, you will find a housing that contains the temperature sensor, then look around for the wire close by just now dangling in free space. Don't ask why many of us know about that...
